Well, if you want a smart pet, keep a human. We keep pets not because they are smart, but because they give us company. It is about an animal who would be our friend and be with us. A dog is very loyal and friendly. On the other hand a monkey is smart, but mischievous. Some people do have monkeys for pets but it is difficult to control them. So people usually go for dogs, if they want a pet.

@ifa, I do not think it is nice to compare kids with monkeys. After all they are human beings and smarter than the monkeys. And monkeys are always difficult to control. The smarter they are, the more difficult they are. @ loui, I do not have much experience with monkeys. But I know their nature and they do not usually like to sit at a particular place quietly, unless there is some food in a specific spot.

Yes I agree with you that monkeys are hard to control especially the male when they reach maturity, they make good pets only when they are young but tend to go back to their wild ways.

Well, I think dogs are more cute. Honestly, monkeys scare me. I think dogs are more loyal too and would defend you if necessary. I mean, they bark whenever they see strangers right but they won't bite friends as long as that friend have been seen by your dog once or twice.

they seem want to compete us in intelligentsia and they are very wild and could attack us back when they think that our existence threat them. i think we have to look another animal to be the pet, no monkey

indeed. the intelligence of monkeys makes them quite dangerous sometimes although these are all speculations.

Haha, I like your discussion. Well, monkeys are smart, you're right, but they are hyperactive animals. They are naughty too. Imagine having them in your house taking your food and eat and they are quite aggressive at times too!

That is exactly why monkeys do not make good pets. If you keep a monkey as your pet and cannot keep a leash on him, then you are asking for trouble.

Dogs are pack animals. Once you establish you are the leader, they will follow you, do what you want, and be loyal to the ends of the Earth. We aren't really looking for brains in a pet. We already know it all. This you can tell to your dog. That monkey doesn't want to hear it.

What makes dogs unique to humans is because dogs have a repetitive gene, let me explain, the dog has the ability to change and alter it's form in a very short span of time, and this is due to the repetitive gene I just mentioned. Humans would like to keep dogs because he can alter it to suit he's needs, the reason why we have a working dog, guard dogs, toy dogs etc...,It's also the reason why we have hundreds of dog breeds or maybe thousands if we would include all the other variations. An animal without the gene remains the same in form even for hundreds and thousands of years and one example is the cow. Ok you mentioned that the monkey is smart, but have you heard or seen a working monkey, a guard monkey or a toy monkey?

"Man Descended From Monkey" so what's the logic of adopting someone who is already present in the home ? so, as humans also have brilliant brain like monkey they opt Dogs as pet.

Man Descended From Monkey actually, i don't believe in this quote. so we have the same brain so we don't want to compete with them?
• India
14 Dec 10
Its not about someone's belief its about science, anyhow. we accept pets so as to compete with them ? you mean to say people who have dog as pet compete with them by barking equally or even louder or do similar stuff? I see pets as friends but not as competitors !

Some people do keep monkeys as pets, but some cities outlaw them. A monkey would be considerably more expensive than an ordinary dog.

I am not really sure. I wonder if it has to do with the price of owning a monkey. I don't know how expensive it would be to buy one, but I think it would be quite a bit. I also think they would require more attention than a dog. You can leave a dog home by itself once it is trained. I don't think I would feel safe leaving a monkey home by itself! It might figure out how to turn the oven on and start a fire or something like that!

Unlike dogs, monkeys don't care about pleasing their owners. They are extremely strong and can be extremely mean. Also, they are still wild and should be left that way.

Monkeys are more intelligent to Dogs, yes, but they are intelligent in different ways, and the ways that dogs have intelligence works much better with us then how monkeys have intelligence. Dogs react to what they are shown, and what you ask them to do. If you point out one spot, and tell them to go there, they will follow what you tell them to do. If you do the same with a monkey, then it will still follow it's own direction, because it's curious for itself, and wants to be in control of itself. Monkeys are also very good at escaping areas, and doing what they want. You can't keep a monkey in your house, they'd much rather get out to where they want to be, and maybe come back just for food. Dogs will continuiously come back to their owner... even if the owner treated it really badly, but still fed it and gave it a place to sleep, it will still come back... a monkey, on the other hand, if it gets treated badly, then it will fight back. These things make having a dog as a pet work out great... but are really awful in having a monkey as a pet.

their curiosity- just like humans have-sometimes cause make us in trouble. and they have willing to fight back too if they harm by people. well, we have something good to learn here by learning animals behavior

I guess some people having monkey as a pet too.. But mostly don't use it as pet as they are over smart. Just like people don't use human as pet because of their over smart.. May be that's why they don't like monkey as pet too...

Lol. Monkeys are smart enough to not like authority which we are. They would not like to listen to commands like dogs do and will respond to rewards only if they are truly interested. It is hard to keep them stimulated all the time and they would require even more attention than dogs. They can be very aggressive and dangerous and are very strong animals capable of tearing a human apart. They belong in zoos and game reserves and used in biological research.

If a monkeys mind is of more intelligence then a dog, they could realize that we were there to somewhat control their lives. Would you like that if the rolls were reversed? People who own monkeys, which there are some, tend to have the monkey lash out in some naturally violent way. Same as you may do in a similar circumstance. The dog is more loyal in this instance. IMO

As everyone has pointed out, monkey's are rather unruly creatures. Mischeivous, curious, and messy. Not only this, but they are difficult to control and their strength makes them dangerous. Remember the lady who's face was torn off by a chimp? I'm not sure if monkeys are quite that strong, but it sure doesn't make the idea of keeping one as a pet very attractive to me.

ifa have you ever watched a monkey? oh lord they would tear your home to shreds, and swing on the curtains and yank your hair. no they may be smart but they are still wild monkeys who like to swing on things and well monkey around. Dogs and cats are much easier on ones home and ones nerves. there are many reasons why dogs and cats make better pets.

Monkeys are wild animals. They do not make good pets. Having a monkey as a pet can be very dangerous. They are always attacking their owners and even though they are small, they can inflict some serious damage. "Bites from non-human primates can cause severe lacerations. Wounds may become infected" On top of that, "80 to 90 percent of all macaque monkeys are infected with Herpes B-virus or Simian B, a virus that is harmless to monkeys but often fatal in humans" source= http://www.bornfreeusa.org/facts.php?p=187&more=1

Hi Ifa!. I think it because taking a monkey as pet is against a law and A house is trully not their habitat. What most dog owner love about their pet is dog have loyalty, they see their owner and their property as the most important think in this earth. They will sacrifice their life just to depend their master, something you will hard to see in any others animal or human. There are so many kind of dog breed thats suited to most need, like family dog with small child, or just lap dog like chiwawa. I think most people who don't like dog because they don't have one or ever have but not choose the right breed for them.
