Hi everyone, I was just thinking cause I come from a family that send kids on special lessons especially on summer like swimming lessons, art class ,karate and martial arts, piano or guitar etc...and now that I have my own family I do the same to my kids to prevent them from wasting time on computer games especially during vacation. Now how many of you are like me? If so what do you let them take up?All of us is in a crisis right now so do you think it is still practical?, when some skills can be learned directly on the internet, no computers when I was young, what do you think?

Hello louievill,I think you are right.I remember,i never be free in vacation because like you, my dad strongly believe that vacation is a great opportunity to tough your hidden potential and be active in interested field.I think boys should give first priority to physical task like swimming, karate, skatting etc... and girls should go for any house hold activities such as cooking class, singing, dancing etc...Intension is to be improve oveall talent rather wasting time.

I think it might be best to let your child have more freedom in choosing what they like. Some children like arts, some like music, others like sports.I think its nice to let your children take part in all these lessons when they are young and when they are older, ask for their opinion. having an additional skill for a kid is good but i think its best for the kids to have a happy and enjoyable childhood. :D

Exactly,I never dictate anything to them, in fact they are the ones who voluntarily tell me what they want to do, I follow what they like if I can afford it, I think this will give them a happy childhood when they remember their father always trying to give what they want as long as it is good for them and no forcing

hi louievill the trouble where I live is that a lot of these specils lessons cost more than poor to middle class people c an afford wile most every one here in California event the poor do have computers and a lot of games onthe computer are free. Also go to your library for a lot of options for lessons for kids free, they have handicraft classes and the kids librarians make it all fun for the kids too. Here the kind of lessons you are talking about do cost money. but here is another thought as I did that in my youth get the kids in boy scouts and girl scouts as the charge is minimum and we went to summer camp;s where we swam, learned craftgs, practiced archery and camped out. we also worked to earn badges in all sorts of things. I even learned how to write a short play and act it out with other scouts for an audience in our county fair.

Yeah we do that here too, my late father, my brother and I were all scouts.I remember my father being a volunteer scout master in the elementary school where my brother and I attended, in fact they both attended the World Jamboree when it was held here in Mt.Makiling during the 70's , well I did'nt come with them cause at that time I was no longer that enthusiastic, I already learned to hang out with friends and they were telling me "that's corny" besides I already grew a long hair which was not allowed in scouting and I did not want it cut.Not going to that International World Jamboree is something I will regret for the rest of my life

I don't have kids or a family of my own, but that would be ideal for me, if I had them. I would put them in different activities during the summer or send them out to travel, if I was financially capable. If not, I would interact with them personally like do game nights or gather friends to play outside.

Yes I still now more then before find it very practical and wise to continue to involve our children in extra curricular activities as the world has evolved in ways that children are wasting a great deal of precious time. Some are picking up bad habits and hanging with bad crowds. I put my kids in baseball, softball, football etc.. It was important to keep them busy and that I too was involved in their activities as well, as they felt very proud to have me routing in the stands. Computers can be both educational as well a bit of fun for them, however as parents I find we have to limit the amount of time they are the computer to assure they are stumbling into the wrong areas while on the PC.

Yes, i also send my children on special lessons on summer but we choose only for the best because of financial crisis here. My eldest daughter is having a journalism workshop every summer since Grade 5, and lately take a Math tutorial. These workshops helps her a lot specially now that she is in High School where exams are more of writing skills. The Math tutorial is also good, she got a very high grade in Algebra and usually have perfect scores in exams. For music, i just bought her a music book where she learn to play the electric organ. She usually do a research in the internet for things she would want to do which i think is very practical. Now at school, they offered a flute lesson which she attended regularly. She already performed on school's stage and also been invited by our department to perform on our Christmas Party along with my youngest daughter who would sing with her. For online things, my daughters are not gamers, the usually do something useful like downloading e-books which she could save to her cellphone and later read, videoke on youtube, or doing graphics.

I'm so happy for you and your family, looks like your children have musical talent, and they are so lucky they have very supportive parents, my eldest son also has guitar lessons every Sunday, yeah and the math subjects ugh those were my weakness when I was in school so I also get them part time tutors whenever I see grades going down, fortunately I'm blessed with children who are always on the upper top of their class.

My daughter did gymnastics when she was little. Then they both played sports in the summer. But during school they were busy with band and things like that. They always had something going on all the time to keep them out of trouble But we also did things together like family game night once a week to keep them from in front of the tv!

That's nice, my elder sister studied ballet when we were young , we teased her a lot cause the word bale or bali which sounds similar to ballet in our native tongue means a sprain , a fracture or a broken bone!

Yes, when I have kids that age, I will definitely have them take some sort of lessons. I think it's good for them to have the opportunity to learn more about something that interests them, and physical activities are especially good, since they get them in the habit of exercising. There are definitely some lessons that are more affordable than others. I'd see what they're interested in, and then shop around to see what would fit into budgets. I'd also make sure they only take one kind of lesson at a time and have them pick something that doesn't have a lot of additional expenses.
