Baggage and luggage

In my younger days I had a backpack which was quite heavy. I tried to keep it under 20 kilos to keep the airlines happy. When I had heavy items I put these in my hand bag which they never weighed. When I was in Australia I sent some things home in parcels by sea mail. I haven't ever traveled with a suitcase. These days I have a buggy to push. In the front I have my baby daughter and in the back I have my disabled toddler son. I take a small holdall which I place in the bottom of the buggy. Then I put a medium sized holdall on the hood of the buggy and keep hold of the handle when I am pushing my children along. I take a small backpack on my back. Some things are essential to take on a trip. I must take my disabled son's catheters. I have to take my contact lenses and a small mirror. To cut down the weight I take less clothing that I used to. What sort of baggage or luggage do you take with you? Which things are essential for you when you pack?

Playing the "Avoid excess baggage charges" Game with the Airlines has now become a habit with Some..For Me on US visits,I have a rolling duffle bag as hold luggage which takes my minimum clothing requirements, toilet bag, heavier clothing I might need, and gifts, which usually all tops out at the limit..I had a smallish shoulder bag which was "Carry On" sized, and though getting on in Years and airmiles was used often on short trips to London on its own and in cabin transatlantic...My Fiance's Cat decided it was His on my previous trip, and Marked it,so it got retired then.I bought a cabin sized roller set on my return-it had a toiletry bag (now going in the hold bag) and an insert travel bag which I can keep with Me with my ipod, headphones, and travel documents inside while the small roller can stay in the overhead bin..essentials for Me would be a neck pillow,a set or 2 of rechargeable batteries, and my travel charger which runs from a UK mains transformer at home,or when abroad, from a car 12V supply-I picked up a US 110V to 12V Adapter,so I can plug in from the mains or in a car on road trips..there's also a 12v to USB plug for my USB powered gadgets! anything else I can buy as required..those little hotel sized toiletries have proven very handy on a trip,too-would recommend those..

You are doing very well at taking exactly what you need for your trip. I am happy to hear that you are good at avoiding excess baggage charges like I do. It was a shame that your fiances cat ruined your carry on sized cabin bag. You know which electrical adapter you need and I am not always sure. The voltage systems can be different. I was fine taking my netbook to Canada because it can work with a range of voltage but the dvd player didn't work with a what I tried it with back home. Bang it had gone. I managed to get the transformer it needed. I also like those hotel sized bottles and I know a shop that sells some of those.

Hi maxine, I´m the suitcase with wheels type. And I have a very small one that I use when I go to warm places and a bigger one for colder places that need more clothes. I will take the smaller one to Aruba next March even if it´s for two weeks. I don´t have any need of showing off dresses. Essentials for me include my pills, my camera, my eyeglasses, a book and some coffee (smuggled) I take shoes that won´t hurt my feet: that is also very important. Take care!

It is excellent that you take comfortable shoes with you on your trip. It is lovely that you will take your small suitcase on wheels to Aruba. Tea and coffee can be pricey when out and about so it is idea that you take some coffee with you. That saves you money and gets you drinks that you like. In one of my local supermarkets I found a cranberry cordial drink and that would be nice for me to take on my trips. All I would need to do is add water. A hug my dear friend.

I always smuggle some things that I need for cooking when I travel. I take along dried bay leaves(for tomato sauces)an oregano. Both are grown at home.

I have a hand-carry sized wheelie luggage that I brought for short domestic trips. It's good for about five days for me. I've only had it for about four months, but so far, I've brought it on all my trips. The things that I always have to pack are my chargers. I have to bring one for my camera, for my ipod and my phones.

When I travel I use a backpack or a suitcase and a handbag. When my husband and I travelled around in Europe for one month I borrowed a big backpack from my brother's girlfriend, and it was very nice to travel that way. When we we travelled around in Latvia and Lithuania last year we had two suitcases and our handbags, but the backpack that we borrowed was big enough for everything and it was nice that we didn't need to carry more than one bag. In my handbag I carry the most important things like money, my passport and my medicine. I keep some of husband's medicine as well and he keeps some of mine in case we lose one of the bags.

It is a very good idea that you and your husband each keep some of the medicines. My son's catheters are in a water pocket so it is terrible going through security with them. I keep a doctors note just in case. One of my worst fears is lost baggage with those in them. In 2008 I took my son on a trip to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia and the airline wanted one piece of luggage weighing up to 15 kilos.

I also travel a lot for work. But my trips are usually short 1-3 day trips. So I only have a small carry on luggage that I lug around. It also have wheels for longer days when it is full. So that I don't have to lift it. I have travel size essentials in there that I only replace when I run out. But the one thing that is always in the luggage is my computer!

It is wonderful that you travel with such light luggage. I think that having a backpack and a sling bag makes your luggage easy for you to carry.
