Last week I went online to Oriental Trading post to order some art supplies for the grandkids. They have good bargains for buying by bulk. So, at the end of the order, this thing popped up saying join easysaver. its free and no shipping will be charged for this order or future orders plus you get $ 10 off next order, etc. Like a dumby, I fell for it even though ive been pretty careful up until now about these scams and havent been scammed for some time BUT, then i was looking at my bank account online yesterday and it showed a charge of $1.95 for it. I know thats not much but I thought hey, they said it was free. I called them up and a good thing i did. come to find out they charge 15 bucks a month. I asked them when the hell did they think i was going to even order enough a month to save on it? so, they agreed to take it off and i told them i was going to put the word out there that this is a sneaky scam. Here lately ive been noticing that more and more these shop online places are starting to do that. you sign up, dont notice the small print about hey you will be paying so and so much a month. so more then ever you've got to keep your gaurd up these days about supposed "free" stuff thats NOT free.anyone got any new scams to list for us?

This is very shocking news to read. I was scammed once by a very professional-looking website in Germany. Fortunately, I had used my credit card to pay and the Credit Card company was very helpful in getting a refund. The Easysavers scam is well documented on the Web and, apparently, also applies to Proflowers as well as Oriental Trading. Here are some links (some of which may be useful in spreading the news about your experiences): http://www.419legal.org/419-legal-blog/34801-easy-savers-9.html http://www99.epinions.com/content_447600234116 http://www.ripoffreport.com/internet-fraud/easy-saver-rewards-e/easy-saver-rewards-encore-mar-4aye4.htm http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/oriental-tradingeasy-saver-c275487.html http://easy-saver-rewards.pissedconsumer.com/easy-saver-connected-to-oriental-trading-scam-20090623150318.html

They can only remove money from your account so long as you agree (or have not noticed that you 'agreed'). I suppose that, somewhere, there was a link or checkbox that said (in very small print) that you 'agreed to the Terms and Conditions'. Regular payments are set up between the company and your bank and are called Direct Debits or some other such name (depending on your country). The agreement can be cancelled at any time by telling your bank not to make payments to that company. Your relationship with your bank is stronger than any agreement you may have made with any other company to remove money on a regular basis from your account, especially if the agreement was made unwittingly.

Hiya bunnybon, There is so much of it around now that I have given up using Credit Cards for the moment as my Husband is unemployed too so I don´t need any extra hassle. That is a typical thing for them to do say it´s free and all of a sudden you find yourself being charged for it and every month. The last one was to do with Text Messaging and they sent you their adverts for free with offers they were not free you had to pay for them. On top of the fact that we did not want their messages or anything like that we got charged for it and were forced to pay for it. This is illegal and with the threat that he was going to take it to Court they stopped right away after we had paid of course. So all out there be careful of what you get into. There are some very dicey deals out there with anything. I don´t know the name of these People but they operate at an international level and it´s to do with offers that come up on your mobile phone or if you phone in for one of those Competitions on the Television. Competitions where you have to answer a question and so on to try and win a prize. They really do take liberties and not by half.

Hiya bunnybon, Yes anything like that is full of traps so you never really know what you are getting into. What he did do was to threaten them in the end because they wanted to charge him another 150 Euros on top. So he said he would put them all over the Internet and he would report them everywhere he could. It´s the only line of defense against these kind of Sharks. I don´t know what Company they are it seems they have many names the lot. They hide behind those names and it´s high time somebody took a stance against them. They are one big rip off gal but anyway they never bothered him again after that he does not like being like that but how else do you defend yourself against these marauders?

I'm glad they gave your $1.95 since it said it was free and gave you free shipping on your Oriental Trading post order. I always try to look for the fine print in those free shipping if you join this for free program. I believe nothing in life is free, so there has to be a catch. Amazon.com had the same thing going, join this and get free shipping free to try for 30 days. I took it and got the free shipping on that one thing I needed. Waited for the time to go in and cancel the free shipping program. Now if they say it's not free to try, oh well, I will be paying my full cost in shipping, cheaper in the long run.

It probably wasn't them, just another company that charges customers a fee to use that service. Then Oriental Trading gets paid as well for this company to do this. That's how they usually work.

I get their calendars every year and have been tempted to order. I appreciate this info just in case I ever do. Watch your next few statements to make sure that the $1.95 was taken off...and that they actually removed you from their enrollment list. You'd be surprised.

Years ago my husband downloaded a 'free' ringtone for his phone, not realizing that a monthly charge would be added to his credit card account. I had to call for 3 consecutive months to finally get the charges stopped permanently. If you do get charged, and you visit or call your bank to get it removed, ask if future charges will post, and what their policy is the get them stopped. Each bank is different. Good luck!

I had to learn years ago when I bought a car. That sneaky vendors and sellers definitely exists. I paid almost twice the amount for a car as I entrusted the word of a salesman, to find later he gave two licks about my raw deal after I figured it out. So I always try really hard to read all TOS, FAQ and fine printing as I am a true believer that we do not get nothing for nothing. Thanks for the discussion as it makes us much more aware to beware.

I use to overlook them until I starting seeing the I lost my earnings here on myLot type of discussions. Where it lists there if members do not login once prior to 90 days all their earnings are wiped to zero. I have seen so many upset members and thought gee, I better start reading those elsewhere too. lol

That's just it. It is free to sign up, but it is not a free service.I tell everyone just because it says it is free doesn't mean it is. Or that it doesn't stop it from tracking what you do or buy. Got to be careful of tracking cookies..because they feed info back to others...that have no business getting your information. I love Oriental trading and occasionally get things from there. But haven't gotten anything yet this year. So I will be on the lookout.

i loved it to for many years and now they've lost a valued customer. so, they had better straighten up their act and drop this other bunch or they might soon go under like many other companies!1

hi bunnybon I had not heard of this one but thanks for telling us and my onehas to be so carefu l. I am handicapped too so its easier for me to shop on line and I have several places I know are legitimate as I have shopped with them for years.I have heard of easytrader but did not fall for them. I remember doing a survey a few years back and it had asked for my phonenumber bad idea, all about some special phone service for x dollars a month and I had said I was not interested. i will be d amned two months went by and finally my son came to me and asked me if this blah blah phone co addition was something I had asked for , and i was shocked they had used our phone number to bill us for a service I had said in the survey that I did not want and c ou ld not use, they had fraudulenty used my phone number. so my son called the phone co and told them and they took it off and reimbursed him for the month before as they said that was fraudulent.

its a good thing he knows about how to fix these things. he seems to be a pretty smart cookie. i have shopped with oriental trading company for years and this is the first time i had anything like this. which goes to show that even companies we are familiar with has started taking on some other companies we should keep a heads up with. its the economy. businesses are doing all kinds of unusual things now to keep afloat i think.

I'd say its a good thing you caught it, you have to be really careful about things like that. I myself don't order from just anyone online, and most of the time its not in their fineprint. It hasn't happened to me yet, but I'll sure be on the lookout for scams like that.

That is why I never sign up for things that want a credit card number. If it's free there's no reason to need a credit card number.. so obviously that's my first clue it's a scam!

it says its free, but i started to sign up and realised it asked for my credit card number. thats what i always go by. if it asks that i know its not free. then, i would not have signed up anything with easysaver but, it had my card number from oriental trading so i didnt realise. these places are "tagging" onto what used to be reputable, good companies. and the companies are allowing it to get more money also

There are far too many people out there to scam you. They are there at every twist and turn and at every step. You have to constantly remain on guard. They play on your greed. Those who are looking for good bargain or for free stuff are the ones who would be scammed first.

I have gotten better about this over the years, but I have done stuff like this in the past. They count on people not looking at the fine print or at the statements when they come. Good thing you figured out what they were doing and took care of it quickly.

yes,i used to fall for it every now and then. but its been 6 yrs since i fell for the "its free" thing. but since id ordered some things, they had my credit/bank card number. usually, in the past it was like classmates or yahoo personals, etc. that i found out was not free after the first month thats been yrs ago.

I know what you mean. I haven't seen it lately as I haven't order things online but they stick stuff in there and if you don't know to be careful and where to look, they will get you. Read the fine print. It will tell you in there, but then I wondered...how can they say it in one paragraph and then have it in the fine print? I notice there is usually a SMALL * after the word "Free" or somewhere in there and the * is down at the fine print saying you will be charged this or that. Sneaky and kniving, but these days with online banking and paying for things on line with a bank card or credit card... and many not critiquing their statements...they get away with it. %15 a month is ridiculious. Good for you for catching them Something I have noticed is "regular" when paying for something online and with a credit/debit card....they automatically renew your subscription next year. They don't tell you that (I learned this from an incident from Yahoo and also Classmates.com) THey don't have a box for you to check to auto renew...they just do it and then let you figure out how or where to find that box and uncheck it! But magazines... they all seem to have this now. ANd if you don't go in and find that box and uncheck it, you will be charged next month without them telling you! Yep, they try to get us coming and going! That is part of why I don't buy much online with a CC or debitcard.

I will buy on Amazon.com. so far that is all! My daughter buys on Target.com adn a few other places and has not had the problem.so it iisn't for everything but like you, I am going to be buying a little more online if I can get it cheaper than in stores and using my My Points to get more points frm buying through them and building up my gift card balance there to get "free" money. I've done okay there, but I know I can do better so this year I will be working on that!

Cooking club of America, I think it was. Not sure why I signed up, probably didn't read the fine print, next thing I know I"m getting a bill. Sent it back with CANCEL written in bold across the front. OR we got charges on our cell phone bill. Those "free" IQ tests where they ask you for a cell phone number? Beware!!!

oh yes i hate those. i seldom use my cell phone enough to even bother with that. years ago, AT&T was sending out 25 dollars checks and i didnt understand about them then, way back in '95 i think it was. stupidly, i thought, haha. they dont know thats not my carrier so cashed the check. the joke was on me and it took a long time to get back my original carrier. didnt realise it gave them the right to automaticly change my carrier to them.so now i never cash a check without knowing what its all about.

I'm not sure what website you are talking about...I am 99% online shopper. Only Groceries that I did not shop online. There are a lot of website that selling cheap or free but you have to be a member of their website. It's kind of like Costco club or Sam's club.... And there are rarely few free stuffs on internet. Most of the time, it's like a free sample stuffs. Try to buy some stuffs from trusted sellers like amazon, looking for Trusted Logo such as Verisign.... You should be fine with online shopping. In my 5-year online shopping experience, I got only 1 scam, and my AMEX credit card working great to void those amount from me. :)
