I might be a bit of paranoia, as I watch some scary movies lately, in regarding to people travel to strange place, especially the former Soviet occupied Eastern Europe. There were many underground gang, or society to kidnap travelers or foreigners for whatever reason. Although the traveling cost is much lower than Western Europe, what about the safety issue. Anyone has experience with Eastern Europe traveling? Can you share your opinion with us?

I have visited many countries in Eastern Europe, and I didn't experience any of those problems. My husband and I travelled around in Eastern Europe for one month in September this year. We visited Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Poland etc. In Romania the taxidriver was trying to rip us off, when we asked for the price he told us a price that was 10 times higher than the price that the locals pay. We refused to pay that amount and the driver reluctantly accepted a lower price. Rip- offs and theft are things that you might experience in Eastern Europe, but I am not very worried about my safety at least not during the day. I don't like ot go out late at night in a foreign country for safety reasons.

I have traveled safely to Eastern Europe a number of times. When I was 18 years old I went to Hungary and it was very cheap plus enjoyable. Then in my mid twenties I have been the the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. Four years ago I had a wonderful trip to Bulgaria and Romania. It was just two years ago that my took my disabled toddler son on a trip to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. I traveled by train and bus when that wasn't available. The transport, accommodation and food costs are are low in Eastern Europe. I am a very experienced traveler and I have been to more than fifty countries.
The most dangerous places I have been are Nairobi, Los Angeles and around Tikal National Park in Guatemala. It was in the Maldives on a lonely beach that I got attacked. I got sick and ill in Malaysia and then ended up falling down a drain.

It depends on where you go of course, but for the most part it is safe. There are some pick pockets etc., especially in the very touristy places (like Prague) and some areas are more dangerous than others, but for the most part it is pretty safe, not at all like in the movies!

Hey :)
I used to travel like a few times a year. I have not been to Eastern Europe side yet but all I can say is always keep a watch regardless where you went. Keep yourself light and bring only needed items when going out to the public.
Just my 2 cents on the matter :)
