I am thinking how many myloters give towards those who are poor and hungry or those who are struck with natural calamities. What inspires you to give?

When i can afford it, yes i do.Knowing that families don't even have enough money to feed themselves or their children, is one of the saddest things i can think of.I just think it's disgraceful that people living in the wealthiest country on earth, find themselves unable to provide for their families, when others seem to have more than enough. No one from any country on earth should have go to bed hungry, especially in the USA.

I quite agree that no one should go to bed hungry. Even in my country, India, we have so many people who are billionaires ( in term of US dollars). Yet we have so large a number of people below poverty line. It's not the shortage of resources, but poor management. Sometimes I felt that Indian in general are very poor in giving. And I wonder if it's because of the religion that most people here follow. I might be wrong though! What is it that motivates you to give? Religious motivation or otherwise?

The religious belief as such does not discourage giving but it does not motivate people enough to give, I think. And since there is no platform through which one can get inspiration to give, I think, people just tend to keep their wealth to themselves than share with those who are in need.

My sole motivation for giving is compassion for the poor and hungry, especially when it comes to children.I just wish i could do more for these little ones who deserve so much more than they get. But, what's the excuse for this? why in a country, such as the USA, that can well afford to make sure no child or family go without food or housing, are there still thousands and thousands of these people left with nothing.? If the reason that people from your country are not giving because of their religion, then something is very wrong, since most religions are supposed to be teaching generosity and compassion for those who are less fortunate.

I often donate clothes and items to local charities. I also will usually donate a dollar when I am at the store and they are collecting for what ever charity it is they are collecting for. I will also put money in the little red buckets when people are out there ringing the bells. That is for the Salvation Army who does so many things for some many different people and different circumstances. If there are natural disasters like Catrina I will always try and do something to help. We have to help each other in this world, any one of us at any time could suddenly be struck with a need.

Good to know that you donate things through Salvation Army. I think Salvation Army are trustworthy people through whom we can donate things. Sometimes we donate and they vanish into thin air because the people are not honest. We have such cases here. So whenever I give I would prefer EFICOR (Evangelical Fellowship of India Commission On Relief). For medical donation EHA (Emmanuel Hospital Association) is a trustworthy organisation in India as far as my knowledge is concerned. There may be others though!

Once in a while I donate money to people who are needy and poor. I don't simply donate money to people I see on street and thereby support begging. It is sad to see people on the street begging for clothes and food. It is very cold here now and it is very difficult to survive without good warm clothes. I am not a rich person, so I have limitations in helping people.

I also donate only once a while. And I also don't donate to any begger. Sometimes I thought that they should work because they are healthy enough. Other times I give. What is that which motivates you to give? Is it your religious persuasion or something else?

At the moment I don't give money to charities very often. I will give money to people who play music in the town centre if I like what they are playing, but I don't give on subscription or to appeals. I am protective of my money and since I don't have any going spare I keep it for my own use. If I am ever rich I would love to give to charities which do work I support because it would be my duty, but now I don't. More than giving money though I would be more interested in helping through volunteering so I can see how the work is going. I would want to know that things are being accomplished by the charities I supported. All the best, Dranz

Thanks for the post. I would also wish to know how the money that I give is utilised. Since so much corruption is there here in my country I would prefer giving to those NGOs that are honest. Few of them that stand out include Emmanuel Health Association, Evangelical Fellowship of India Commission On Relief etc. There may be others that I don't know though!

Yes, my family donates food to the local food bank almost every week, and we donate a lot of clothing and household goods to charities, too. It isn't always a big donation, but every little bit helps. Another option is to volunteer time--I sometimes help sort and stack the food donations for the food bank staff. it only takes an hour or so, and is so worthwhile, especially AFTER the holidays, when the donations really slow to a trickle.

It's nice to hear of your involvement towards the needs of the poor. I wish that more and more people get involved in getting rid of poverty in the world. If everybody shows little more of concern I am sure it can create a big difference. Specially the rich ones and people in power can do so much.

Of course I've done. I donate clothes I don't use and some money to my church, where they give all the donations to people that really need it. They help with material things while they carry hope and a message of Salvation to the people who don't know about our father in the heaven.

Good to know that you donate towards the need of those who are poor. Even in our church we undertake such project where we gather clothes to give to those who are less unfortunate. We also sometimes provide food very very cheaply to those who are poor. From them we charge little, and not totally free, so that they will think that they have bought the food, and their pride will not get hurt!
