There is a town nearby, every December they put on "A Dickens' Christmas". They hire actors to portray different characters from the Dickens' novel, A Christmas Carol. These characters walk around the town all day, conversing with folks, singing carols, etc. At different times of the day they act out a scene from the novel. The town also does fun stuff like a horse drawn carriage ride, free roasted chestnuts.. all sorts of great things. It's a really fun family outing to go walk around the town, see all these people dressed up like Victorian characters, and hear the carols. Here's a link to get an idea of what I'm talking about.. http://www.skaneateles.com/visit/events-a-attractions/dickens-christmas.html
So my family and I went today, and while walking around we saw a sign that said we could dress up like Victorian characters ourselves, for free. They had a small room with a bunch of different articles of clothing, hats, shawls etc. So 2 of my kids decided they wanted to dress up.. and I grabbed a hat and a shawl myself. I thought we looked so cute, and it was fun to walk around town almost blending in, LOL. I've attatched a picture of us all dressed up.
Have you ever gone somewhere and dressed up to fit into the theme of the event, like perhaps a renessaince fair or something similar?

In the summer there is a big Renessaince fair about an hour away. It's expensive though so we don't get to go often. I think we've been twice. Every year we say we'll go again, but we can't afford it when the time comes. I love that the Dickens' Christmas is totally free! We didn't spend a single dime yesterday. At most, hubby would want to stop into one shop that sells popcorn and we'd have to get some for all the kids.. but that's what? $5-$10 for a snack for them all.. We didn't because hubby's being very stingy with his money at the moment hoping to finish his Christmas shopping for me.

Oh, that sounds like so much fun, and it makes books real to the kids to see people walking around dressed and performing. At one time there was a guy who brought old fashioned clothes and his phot equipment to the mall and let people dress up and get pictures. I did that for a Christmas present one time. They were more western style outfits.

That looks like it was a lot of fun to get to do with your children. There is nothing like that around here, but I certainly wish that there was. We have a drive through nativity scene that isn't too far away from our home but it seems like I miss it every year. However, we still find other fun Christmas themed activities to do. This week has been quite busy with wrapping, baking cookies and also I'm going to take some Christmas pictures of the kids after Paul's pants get done in the wash.
