This is one lil gadget I've had my eye on for a year or two. Anyone try it? My Aunt picked a set up really cheap 2nd hand but yet has to try it. I was hoping I could try hers since she's not using it but no dice. I was this may be something to teach my 8yo who wants to crochet how too make something on her own. Just wondering what successes people out there have had with this gadget and what the possibilities were beyond hats with it.

This is a link to a blog that has information about making homemade versions of the knitting nobby or nifty knitter. I like this blog because it is talking about ways to "unplug" your kids. http://unplugyourkids.com/tag/knitting-knobby/
I hope you can make some that you like from this information.

I have some of the rectangle looms as well as the circles. I have not done much with them. Your 8 year old may or may not be able to use it and follow the instructions. When I was staffing adult mentally handicapped one of my clients bought a whole bunch of the sets, but could not see well enough to do the stitching. Did you ever do what they call "spool knitting" as a kid? They even had Barbie knitting kits that work on a similar principle. Kids can do it. There may even be patterns online that show how to do "spool knitting" and then you could make whatever ones you want. There are pattern leaflets that go with them that show how to make stuff. With the rectangle ones you can make squares and put together afghans. My older sister says that she knew Tribal members who made wide rectangles and just worked them into blankets. You can get the special hook at walmart for less than two dollars. and leaflets with patterns for as little as a dollar, I think.

It is wonderful that you want to be able to teach your daughter to crochet. I remember when I was about the same age as your daughter I wanted to learn to crochet as well because it was something that my mother was always doing. Well, she tried and tried and tried to teach me but to no avail. You see, the problem that she had with teaching me was because of the fact that I am lefthanded and couldn't exactly mimic her. We finally had success when she sat in front of me to teach me and then I mocked what she was doing.
Don't know anything about the knifty knitter though.
