Female Gods. Is There Any Female Gods?

I just would like to know if there is any religion that has a female God from the past up to the present? It seems all of the Gods in each religion here on earth is always a male. I just would like to know if there is a female God that exists today? I am interested in those female Gods because I am so tired of a male God like the God of a Christian bible that teaches sexism in the first Genesis. Men are dominant and he has the authority over women. Women are just subordinate to men. I hope no one get mad at me... I am just curious if there is a religion that worship a female God. That is all.

I'm sure there are. Interesting though... you are not trying to find out what God thinks, but rather you are going to find a religion that fits what you want? Doesn't that defeat the purpose? Isn't the whole point to find out what God says?

You just said to me earlier... however I don't agree with the belief you are trying to hold[ or something like that] and that is fair enough! In the meantime you are looking for a religion that would fit your way! fair enough again! but you know what? you will never find one. I for one do not believe in religion, and why? what religion had ever done for human kind? I tell you what![I'm sure you know what]but killing and burning a lot of innocent people! no my friend we do not need another religion [period.]

How would you know what God thinks? And how did I know what God thinks? We only used faith and belief. We don't have "telephone" or "cellular phone" to talk to him physically and emotionally. We didn't see him since child so, we didn't know what God thinks. We only based on our faith and belief on a bible and on religion and of course, we inherit our belief from our parents... so, how would I know huh? I am not trying to find what God thinks because we don't see him and we don't talk to each other physically, but I am trying to find the true religion that teaches about God that is being 'fair' for both men and women, God that is really powerful and good to everyone and God that does not create sexism in the human society because if I would stay in my religion that teaches sexism, I would feel as if God is unfair to everyone and mostly, I would hate him and curse him that would result as blasphemy and because I believe that God is fair, it is better to find a religion that would teach people about God is being good and not being unfair. In short, I don't believe what christian people believe in the first genesis. In short, christian bible has a lot of contradictions.

Oh. That is sad. That is why; I lost faith in the Christian bible. I thought at first that God fair and perfect when it comes to his creation, but I realized that he is biased on both gender and I really do not like it.

There is only one God, the God of the Holy Bible that created heaven and earth. Although God is neither a man or woman, everything He has revealed to us about Himself is masculine. God chose to make Eve after Adam, and from his rib. Who are you to question God? Even so, if you think that puts women in some lower position, you do not know what the Bible teaches.

Graptopetalum - I am not trying to put women down. I am content with God's ways revealed in His word and creation. I said "everything He has revealed to us about Himself is masculine.", and I am not sure I like that wording. He reveals Himself in the masculine gender, but it is not that he needs to demonstrate himself as masculine or feminine. What you say about female grammar being used for the Holy Spirit may be true, I do not know. It may make more sense since the Holy Spirit is the comforter. However we try to describe God, we know that within the Trinity is everything glorious and majestic, and far more than we can comprehend.

God is not a Deist and He has made that very clear in the Bible. All through the Bible, God is very involved in people's lives. He demonstrates that He has a master plan for mankind and that until that is fully accomplished, He will maintain sovereign control over the affairs of man. Here is a partial description of Deism, and it shows that if I was a Deist, I would need to write a new Bible. "Deists deny the Trinity, the inspiration of the Bible, the deity of Christ, miracles, and any supernatural act of redemption or salvation. Deism pictures God as ambivalent, uncaring, and uninvolved. Thomas Jefferson was a famous deist, referring often in his writings to “Providence.”"

@ djbtol For me, God should not revealed himself as masculine if he is neither a man or a woman. If people believed that God does not have a gender, then God is universal. Meaning to say, God does not need a revealed religion. If that is the case, it is better to be a deism than to involve in any revealed religion because Deism believed in God, but do not believe in Holy Bible. Deism is contrary to Atheism.

Hi IntrovertShy... now don't be too shy to ask a question!I was brought up in a Catholic environment I learnt the bible to a certain extent! I did ask many questions, and many weren't answered. Now I believe [ my self] that God is an entity [ not male or female] a formless thing in our universe. We had Goddesses in the past but that went out the window when men took over. You see [The Bible] [ The biggest story ever told] was written by males[ and to their own convenience] how good is that! just imagine [female then]where witches! I just ask my self[ and ask some more] how true it's the bible!.And at the end I ask some more if any one believe in God why in the name of God are so many people killed? To me it's a contradiction.

Unfortunately the Roman Catholic church is notoriously sexist (in spite of semi-deifying the Virgin Mary but holding a woman who's a mother and a virgin up as the ideal has its problems). It also doesn't follow the Bible very well. I suspect a lot of your questions weren't answered because you were pointing out things were the Bible contradicted the Church's teachings. However I don't agree with the beliefs you've now come to hold.

Why would you think that God is a male? Just because male centered societies asked some painters to portray God as a male? Jews were shepherds in ancient times. They had a male centered society. They NEEDED a male God so that´s what they had. It worked for them. Jesus was a jew and an observant one. So he also talked about God as a "Father". Yet, in his time, women started to have more power that before (I am referring to christian religion). But there have been other regigions with female Goddess. Aymaras (in the Andean culture, worship Inti (the sun and male principle) and the Pachamama (mother Earth). Reading history of religions will help you with your query. I like the Aymara idea of two different roles with one purpose

You are talking about human beings here, not about Gods. Apostles were men. I just today read an interesting explanation about God in Erich Fromm´s The art of loving. The God of the jews at the time of the 10 commandments was not a man-like God at all.

A female apostle, Junia e? Why does not she included in 12 apostles during the life of Jesus Christ? And 12 apostles are the most famous that I have always heard since the day I was born and baptized as a Catholic Christian. 12 apostles are all male. Of course, Jesus Christ is also included. How I wish that Jesus Christ would also include a female apostle in his group. It does not matter at all.

I'm not at all sure that the idea of God as male comes from "male centered societies" asking "painters to portray God as male". I don't see why shepherds would need a male God either. I'm not sure about women getting more power in the time of Jesus. Have you read Prov 31:10-31? Have you heard of the prophetess Deborah? Surely these speak of women having positions of power and respect in old testament times! However, in his day, Jesus was controversial for teaching women. He had many female followers and many of the leaders of the early church were women and there's even a passing mention of a female apostle, Junia(s), in Rome 16:7!

I am telling the times before christianity was followed popularly among people.A group of people worshiped nature as feminity and performed rituals and all. That group became smaller and smaller as christianity became more popular.I dont remember the exact years as you mentioned.I read it in some books regarding their culture and mode of worship and all.

Hmmmm. I have also read that kind of facts on the internet about people who worshipped female God. As Chrisitianity become popular, patriachal society is like a virus that spread all over the country. Jesus Christ is a male and God is a male because if he does not have any gender, Christian people would not call him 'God the Father' or Jesus Christ would not pray the 'Father's prayer' and it is also wrong to pray 'Mother's prayer' because it does not indicate on the bible.

Hinduism has Many , many G-ds , both male and female. Ancient Egypt has Isis, a very powerful G-ddess! Wicca celebrates the G-ddess.I believe the Being we named G-d can come down as a male Or a female . In other words, If you need G-d to be female then She is female.

In our Hindu religion there are a lot of Female gods. The fact is the female god is more powerful than the male gods. They say the male gods came only from the female gods, and are knows as SAKTHI(Power). My favorite god is also a female god ADHI PARASAKTHI, in Melmaruvathoor, which is a holy town, about 150kms from my house. My other fellow mylotters have given the other details of the festivals of the female gods.

There are many female gods in Hinduism for example and the early pagans of the the British Isles had them too. In fact, male Gods are a much more recent belief system created by early patriarchal churches where for hundreds of years, were closed to women inasmuch as they were not permitted to become ordained as ministers. _Derek

I cannot know for certain that there female gods are older than male gods, I can only speculate on what I have studied over the years on what archeologists have theorized. One thing in Zen practice is to not know, but discover. To me it doesn't really matter that much whether male of female as the past is no more, and only holds interest for us, the future isn't yet, so that make only now, this moment as really real. Within each male, there is a female, and within each female there is a male. Is the sould male or female? I would think it could be either. And also I would think that God could be either. It is written that God is ominpresent - everywhere and in everything, so God must trascend gender don't you think? _Derek

Do you want religion and stories or do you want Reality???? The reality of it all is that gender is a parameter of this physical world. If we were no longer in our physical bodies, gender would mean nothing to us. God is neither male nor female.

If God is neither male nor female like what the Christian people are trying to say, then why does he need to revealed himself as masculine? He could choose to be a female or maybe, a physical form without a gender, but who needs a physical form if God is neither male nor female... huh? Anyway, do not answer my question. Let us just forget it because I do not want to argue, he he he he.

Unfortunately traditional Christianity is more sexist than it should be. The Bible has prophetesses, a female apostle and praises female political leaders. It even praises a woman for carrying out an assassination! The ideal woman is a wife, mother and business woman (prov 31:10-31)! You will find that many modern churches, both liberal and evangelical, have moved away from the old sexist beliefs, but for different reasons.

If your talking about worshipped gods there are many in the Hindu religion. In the greek and roman mythology, aphrodite, hera, artemis and athena. But if you are talking about a supreme female god, I don;t know of any.

If you are searching for female godesses still worshipped today, the religion of Wicca celebrates the Goddess, who is Mother Earth and Nature and a giver of life. Most Native American religions worship one goddess the way the Judeo-Christian religions worship one god.

I think the Greeks also have a number of female goddesses such as Aphrodite, Athena, Hera, Maia and loads and loads more. It's true that a lot of religions have one central God which is usually a male, but since I don't believe in any religion I wouldn't know exactly about that. all I know is that the Greek do have a lot of female goddesses
