Do you think too much application of technology in modern films is compromising with the soul of a movie?

Not that I have seen. All the ones I have gone to recently I think used technology to the best of their ability. None seems to be compromised. I saw TRON recently and it was great. Then before that I saw Sorcerer's Apprentice and it was very good. I don't see where there would have been any compromising of the 'soul of the movie'.

I agree with you celticeagle - I adored Avatar and felt that there was huge soul to that movie though much of it was created with technology, the story telling was superb and the technology complimented the story so it melded well, as with the Sorcerors Apprentice. I haven't seen the latest Tron movie yet but the clips I have seen look great. Technology is so good these days that if the story telling is also good, the soul of the movie still shines through without a problem.. Mind you I tend to choose films that appeal to me and that I can lose myself in for a bit and be entertained by so in that frame of mind maybe things do seem more seamless? I don't think I would make a very good film critic lol

I love Avatar too. It reminded me of something Edgar Rice Burroughs would have created in his day. Sort of reminded me of something like A Princess Of Mars. ERB was such a great written sort of like Jules Verne in creating worlds. The TRON movie was so cutting edge it was really something to see. I would get so into the backgrounds sometimes I would lose track of the story. I tend to pick movies to get lost in as well. I am a member of Netflix and only go to the theater to see the epics that you have to see on the big screen. I think you would make a good film ctitic. Your critique would just come from a different direction.

Sometimes. I think sometimes they spend so much on putting special effects in to movies and they forget that it still has to have a good story line, and the actors still have to do a good job on the movie. I am also really sick and tired of all the 3D stuff, most of the time it is senseless and just a way to make everybody pay $3.00 for a pair of cheap glasses that probably cost a nickel a piece to make.

The makers are exploiting not only the tremendous advance in technology but also the glamour of the artists leaving aside a good story on which a movie is based.

Theoretically the use of technology, which I assume you are meaning CGI, should really only enhance the soul of the movie. It should embellish certain points to illustrate a greater level of understanding and improve the way a movie feeds are imaginations. Sadly the reality is that the movie industry isn't concerned about the soul a movie because the mass public want simple entertainment which pleases on a visual level. As such technology has been used to provide greater entertainment purely on a visual level and as such we get movies which have no storyline but one big visual after another.

I think that there are a lot of times that special effects are overdone on movies and that really takes away from what the end result is. I personally believe that movies are much more enjoyable when there is a lot less special effects applied in the making of the movies. That said, I am not a person that really gets a lot of enjoyment out of seeing movies that have been produced in the 3D manner because I think a lot of the movie is lost in translation in these cases.

I don't think so. I think that the soul of a movie is combination of many things from actor, actress and technologies... So, a good film is a good combination.

No not if the soul of the movie Is technology. It seems there are only 3 types of films that are coming out most of the year and then during the fall , there is another. There is either a comedy " made for the whole family." , Or the Action technology filled film or the romantic comedy. Then in the fall , her comes the " feel good" Ot thought provoking drama. So if you want less technology in the films you see, wait until fall or stick with romantic comedies.

I think technology has taken the place of good acting and lighting. I'm a fan of pre-1950 movies. They had very little technology and special effects so they had to rely on lighting and good acting. They had more atmosphere and emotional impact than nearly anything that is made today. Those actors could convey more emotion in one wordless look than most actors now can convey with a two minute speech and computer graphics.

Movies such as star wars lot the hear tand soul of movie that people wopuld to feel and touch or the movie touch them and is not there. You are correct in the saying that technology takes away the soul of movies.

Hello Didi, i'm not so big fan of the movies, but sometimes i like just watching whatever it is. And you got great question here in the discussion, because sometimes the most popular movies are using too many fake effects to hide the senseless scenarios they use for the same movies. I can give you as example our bulgarian movies. When the country was communistic country, we had great movies. I was born 4 years before the communism went out of my country, but here i can still watch the old movies with pleasure. They have that great spirit, when actors are not so good paid as they are now, when they were not able to use special effects in the movies, but the movies got great sense and you can see that the actors are playing because they LOVE doing it, not because they expect to become rich of that job. Nowadays our movies are just awful. Making movies is still something expensive, but even if someone got idea for movie, he doesn't know how to introduce the movie so it can be watched from more people. Just the movie are not touching anymore, they can't reach the public, people don't find the sense easy and it's not because people are stupid for sure. What i could see lately are the movies which doesn't have message for the public and that's worst, we just waste our time with something which can make us laugh, but we don't learn anything.

Its in the eyes of the viewers because it varies from person to person if what is his/her interest when it comes to movies. For me though I like the present day movies with their back ground effect and computer effects.

now a days the people want to see the things which are impossible in real world, thats why the films with modern technology are having craziness. yes in my view the soul of modern films is technology because 90% of the film is computerization and remaining is real.
