Cell phones!

My girls got me a new cell phone for Christmas. I just tried for 2 hours to program all my numbers in it. The book does NOT contain any instructions on how to program your numbers! In fact it doesn't even tell you that you can! I called my daughter and she sent my granddaughter over and she did it all in less then 5 minutes! I haven't decided if this is 'dumb blonde over 50' or if cell phones belong in a teen world!!! Or is it just "instruction books" are not well written? I know with our DVD we gave up on the book and just played with it till we got what we wanted! What do you think?

The teens are just more updated when it comes to gadgets. There are user-friendly cellphones, just try to browse the menu and find out by yourself on how to operate it, no need for manuals. But if you're in doubt of what you are doing, you really have to be patient in reading the manual.

I think your so right that the teens are more updated on the gadgets. I did try to browse through the menu, that was how I learned to operate my old one. I read and reread the manual, it is not in it! I even called my daughter and read it to her! There is just nothing in it. Most manuals give you pictures and tell you what everything is. Not this one! I have already found stuff on it that isn't in the manual. Thanks for your response.

This is a Motorola phone. The service is Net10. I would not call this user friendly. I barely use the cell phone so this was the cheapest way for me to go. Some people like change, and like all the new technology stuff. I don't, so that probably does not help. I am noticing that I like change less and less.

I never had the cell phone until I went to work 5 years ago. Running the back roads for 17 miles. Once I had a flat tire and had to walk to find help. Once the car broke down on me and the school bus picked me up and took me to a house to call for help. My other daughter put me on her cell phone contract then later I got one of my own. I told the girls this was what I wanted when they asked me about it for Christmas. My old contract was up and this should be much cheaper. I think I have a very smart granddaughter! Her mother said "I'll send the phone obssesed one over!"

Cell phones belong in a teen world lol Kids seem to be born with an inate sense of how to work these things whereas many of us over 40 tend to have to spend some time working it out.. weird isn't it why that should be but maybe it's partly because we remember the mystery that surrounded the development of all this 'new' technology and how fascinated we were by it, maybe that gives it an aura of psychological difficulty for us that teens are not hampered by?

Iam sure if we think back there were things we could do with stuff that just amazed our grandparents at how easy it came to us and hard for them. I remember my mother getting a new stove and couldn't get the self clean oven to work, I was in junior high and picked up the book and turned the knobs and it worked just fine! You may have the key there. I know I have this "trying to understand how and why with something" where as they just accept and trust!

yeah it's strange how we find it so hard to accept and trust that something will just work for us as we get older lol - not that we even are that old :) I see in a later post that your grand-daughter advised you to just type in order to add the number that you have missing from your address book - my phone works that way - ie if you type in the number as if you were going to call it, the phone gives you the option to save it and add a contact name if the number isn't recognised - may be worth a try?

do not feel bad. i am 41 years old and everything i have to get my daughter to do for me. like when she was just starting school. she had learned about computers. and i had to get her to show me how to turn one on. it is just best to ask your children. before reading the book. i found it to be alot easier. and faster.

Hi Maryjane~ I have to get my daughter to do everything for me too! Sometimes she probably wishes she didn't live across the road from me! Love those teen age grandchildren, I call and they come running! One is my little shopping partner when I want to go and also my little helper when I need things, so glad she is willing! I do that a lot, just call my daughter up and ask her, she can walk me through something faster then I can look it up and try to comprehend it!

This is a fast generation. Your granddaughter is very smart with latest techonology.Because in your teenage you may not have this techonology. Now a days children are more keen with the latest techonology.

Many older people have such ideas. We can't say that cell phone belong in a teen world. But there is no denying that cell phone companies tend to cater teenagers.Because teens are willing to buy hight-tech cell phone, so these company can make handsome money from teens. These kind of cell phones better suit teens. It is more difficult to use for older people.

The phone comes in handy when in the store and you see something and want to ask someone about it. We live a distance from the stores so when I shopping and see something on sale I will call my daughter and ask her if she wants it. We kind of shop for each other but it saves both of us having to run to town for things. I never worried about a cell phone until I was working and had a flat tire and no way to get help. After that experience, and also running back roads and winter driving in the snow, I wanted the phone. Now I just like it for the comfort it gives when I am driving. I think the difficultness depends on the design and the book. I have still been going through this book and cannot find anything about how to store #'s. All the 'toys' that it does have on it I could care less about. Thank you for your response.

For years I had a very simple prepaid phone, of the form they now call a stick phone I think. No frills, but a very good instruction book. It finally got to where it would not keep a charge, and a battery was not worth the investment. I wanted a new phone. Well the new phone has about three pages of instructions. It tells me the capabilities, but not how to do the stuff. I think it is just that they assume everyone knows how to do everything with a phone.

I have had trouble with instruction books lately! The one to the dvd I swear does not go to our dvd! It does't make any sense! My husband got me a new radio for my car! I have a horrible time setting the clock! My granddaughter started on the phone and said "oh it does this' you have to do this' and I just looked at her and said "just DO IT!!!!" So glad I have granddaughters to do these things! Blessings of them living across the road from us! Thanks for the response!

i think cell phones and anything new is just easier for kids and teens, young people because they've grown up with them. i still cant text. ive been shown how but cant get the hang of it my son has to do everything for me almost thats the least bit new. digital cameras drive me nuts. so just as we could make vcr's work and our camera back when, and grandma couldnt, i think thats the explanation.

Oh the digital camera! I want my film camera back! It was just so much easier! AND worked!!! I need a new digital camera! Mine isn't that old, but it won't hold a charge and my daughter said that replacing the battery doesn't help, she had the same camera. Really makes me mad because mine has not been used that much! I held out on the film for as long as I could but I like Kodak film and it isn't available in the stores here anymore and to order it online..I am not that rich! I don't text!! I could care less about it. Same way with messages, I have caller id (well, I did, I don't know if I will on this or not...book doesn't say!) maybe I'll have to have message...YUCK! hadn't thought about that! Thanks for the response.

It's a teen world. When I got my first cell phone I never used the phone book because I had one in my purse that was written down. Now I program my phone but I'm amazed at the other things my kids know what to do with their cell phones and the youngest is only 9 years old.

My other phone, I figured out how to program it. I even figured out how to take pictures! But there are no instructions on how to do it. She missed one # and I still haven't figured out how to do it. She said "just type grandma!"...are you kidding I got all I can do to figure out the computer!!!! I don't use all the options. Just the calls. For Christmas I wanted a different phone because I know there are cheaper programs out there then what I have. My old contract is paid off so it changing will only save me money! Even more cause they got me a prepaid card for it. Thanks for the response. glad to know it isn't the "dumb blonde over 50" symdrome that I keep thinking I have.
