Do you make your own croutons?

I always have croutons and bread crumbs around that I make when I have leftover French bread. I place them in a plastic bag and then in a jar to have them handy for any purpose. Do you like croutons? Do you make your own or do you buy them at the super? Share!

Hiya margi, I have bread Crumbs to make my own Bread Crumb Fillets and all that but I don´t make the others very much as they don´t care for them. I would be making them just for myself really. I don´t see much French Bread here anyway but the bread the Spanish make is much the same I think anyway. I was in a Bar-Restaurant not long back on the Border of France and I did not see one bit of French Bread anywhere. Also the French were eating our Bread instead something to be said for that I suppose too.

I said French bread so that more people understood. In my country, many bakers came from Spain and the recipes are spanish, I´m sure. But I have had baguettes in France and they are much the same as our marraqueta or pan batido.

And it´s the same taste as the bread for bocadillos.

Hiya margi, Yes I know that. It´s just that the French come over the Border to eat "the Tapas" in this Bar in particular as he does them very well too. You know the Spanish Tapas famous all over. I imagine that Spanish Bakers went to live and work in your Country they left a good heritage then too. I love Spanish Bread but the only thing now is that it is not lasting half as long as what it did. If you have a big freezer you are okay because you can refreeze it but not if you have not got one like that. As for the Spanish Tapas this causes a lot of crowds in that Bar in particular and half the time he does not know whether he is coming or going. The French make a beeline for that Bar every Weekend. Just try and park there if you can.

I don't use croutons but when my bread gets stale I tear it up for bread crumbs and put them in the freezer, this way when I want bread crumbs for anything I have them ready to go! Another thing that I do is I mix up about 4 cups of the bread crumbs with salt and pepper, 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning and 1/2 teaspoon sage, 1 small diced onion and 1 stalk chopped celery. I coat my chicken pieces in this then put a little extra on top, then I make chicken gravy and pour over it and bake at 325 for 1 hour! It is so good. The left over mixture I keep in a ziploc bag in the freezer ready to go for another time!

You may have to play with the list of ingredients. Different brands of seasonings have different strengths. Every thing I do is Watkins. The gravy poured over and simmered in the chicken and dressing really gives the gravy an extra flavor! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! I have even saved the left overgravy and used it in chicken and noodles or chicken & vegetable soup, or even added it to another chicken and dressing dish! This could be wear I might mention that mashed potatoes and gravy are my #1 favorite!!!

When I get a salad at a restaurant, I often ask for it without croutons. At any rate, I can tolerate them, but they aren't my favorite thing, and I don't make them.

I like them. But I don't have a wave to make them. So, I must buy them. I hope that I can buy a new wave for me in this year.

I cut them and leave them to dry in a plate in the kitchen. Then, if you want to add something, you can put some oil in the skillet and a bit of crushed garlic or oregano.

It all depends on if I am in a hurry or not. If it is a relaxed day and I have the stuff I will make my own. But I always keep a bag around in case I don't have the time. I used to make my own all the time. Why waste things if they can be put to use.

I make my own when I have the ingredients and the time. Then I put them away and use them when I need them. It´s wonderful to have enough bread crumbs when you are in the middle of doing something. And to have crouton toppings without ever thinking of buying them.

I used to do that too but lately I don't use them as often. I guess the next free day I have I will make a batch up. It is a lot easier to have them on hand instead of running to the store or taking the time out to make them when I am in a hurry.

I make croutons often (as well as my own bread from scratch). I take thick slices of bread and cube it. Toss it with olive oil, salt, pepper, italian seasoning, and garlic powder. I then toast it on 350 until lightly brown and crisp. Then while they are hot i toss them in fresh parmesan cheese.

That sounds wonderful! I love garlic but I never use garlic powder but prefer fresh crushed garlic.

I do not make my own croutons at home, but I know how to do it, because I have to make them all the time at work. They are not that hard to make. We sell toast with most of our meals, so we have loaves of bread on-hand anyway. However, we can't use the end slices of the loaves for anything else, so we actually use the end slices of the loaves of bread to make our croutons so that we do not just throw the end slices away. So, I can make croutons here at home very easily if I wanted to...

I have made my own croutons before. I do enjoy them, but I will only eat them if I make them because I know they can be really high in fat and calories when restaurants make them, and I feel that defeats the purpose of having a salad. When I make them my self at home I know what I am putting on them and I know that they are not so bad health wise.

I used to always buy croutons (for salads) and bread cubes (for turkey stuffing) but have recently started making my own. Whenever I'd have some bread go stale from not eating it fast enough (which is true with almost every loaf since my husband doesn't eat much bread), I used to throw it out for the birds but just this past holiday season I began to save it up in the freezer until I had enough, then make my own bread cubes or seasoned croutons, whichever I need at the moment. I don't use bread crumbs often but, whenever the next occasion arises, I'll most likely make my own of them as well. Sure is a lot cheaper to make your own not to mention healthier!

And you can also season them as you like. I dry the croutons made with stale french bread but love to fry them in olive oil with some crushed garlic to put oover lentil or bean soup. I make soups when I have some leftover lentils or beans by just putting them on the blender and adding some milk. Yummy and cheap in winter!

I don't use croutons very often, not really caring for them on salads. I only make my own when I'm making holiday stuffing. I save my leftover breads to make breadcrumbs. I like to use several types of bread, all ground up together. Then I store some 'as is' and the rest with various dried herbs.

I never knew to do that. That's neat. Of course now I'm gonna have to do that. I like making food for myself. Makes me feel domestic every once in a while.

It is a lot cheaper than buying some and you save in 2 ways. You eat all the bread you bought and homemade croutons are cheaper and taste better than bought ones. Scroll down for some ideas.

If I am not pressed for time, I like to make my own croutons. Seasoning them the way I want is a guilty pleasure. It is more convenient sometimes just to buy them packaged in the store. the devotion won't be the same though.
