I am a great believer in that a decent bed equals a restful sleep. I would never have a television in a bedroom, as an example. Just the bed and some furniture lol. However, when that bed is a tad lumpy I reckon it disrupts sleep. What do you think? If I could choose a manufacturer it would be Silentnight, a British company who sell beds worldwide. Sealy are based in Cumbria. I would definitely NOT buy an imported bed. Do you prefer a pocket-sprung mattress to a memory foam one (I'd love to hear from anyone who has the latter, as I'm curious to know what they are like) or is a new bed or mattress the last on your list of things to buy, even though we spend most of our lives asleep? Unless you're vonmac.

A couple of years ago, after having my (spring/coil) mattress for nearly 30 years, I bought a new mattress and box springs. I decided on a sleep number-type bed (air), and I love it. I find that I never adjust the air. Unlike my old mattress which was "hard", now that I'm older, I tend to keep the mattress really soft. I have no problem sleeping...I do have a hard time getting out, especially on cold mornings.

Do you have a photograph of it as I'm struggling to picture what you mean?

Hopefully you can get through with this link. This is the mattress I bought. More than what I intended to spend, but it's been great. http://www.furniturerow.com/DenverMattressCo/Mountainair-Sensations-Mattress-Group/MountainAir-Sensations-Queen-Mattress-Set/prod531765/

I have not tried a memory foam mattress. I agree, we need to keep distractions out of the bedroom. I have concern about the heat, as well. I use an electric mattress pad in the winter, and I would wonder if that would cause a memory foam to deteriorate. I would probably buy a memory foam mattress topper to use if I was going to try it.

A memory foam mattress topper! What a great idea! I knew of their existence but they'd completely left my fuddled brain until you mentioned them. Bless you my friend. Told you you were wise didn't I?

That might even take care of the lumpiness for a while. In the US we can get them at Wal Mart for under $200. I do not know if it is wisdom or if it is experience.

Personally I think a bed that you choose to sleep on does make all of the difference in how you sleep, as if you have a Bad bed at home I assume it would not help to make you a Good person to want to be around all the time. For me, we bought a New bed probably around 5 yrs. ago or so, and ours is very comfortable. We bought one that was a little higher end because of the quality and it was recommended for the type of sleeper we are. What you might want to do, is start asking some questions to some of the places that tend to sell beds, and see if you can at least try one out for a short bit until you can find the one with the Best fit for you. Wishing you the Best.

Hi Tina! I like beds that are high up as well..the divan-types with a deep mattress on the top of it. We are lucky in that there are a few bed shops round here. I already have one in mind but haven't the finances to buy any type of bed, let alone a really good one. Let's hope 2011 brings me a job. I can buy what I like then!

If you feel uncomfortable during sleep then I believe it's time for you to get a new bed. That's an obvious answer to an obvious situation. If I were you I will do it without thinking twice. Beds were made to last long so when you're thinking you want a comfortable bed that can make you sleep peacefully and with comfort, then you will need to get a descent one. I know it costs more but it's a worthy investment especially when you want to keep it for a long time. A month or two before my wife and I got married, we were frantically looking for a place to live and once we got it, the first thing that we want to get is the bed frame and mattress together with pillow and bed sheets. Regardless if our house is empty but we need a place for us to sleep, so bed comes first in our mind. This also happen when we finally bought a house, after we moved our stuff in our house the first thing I want to set up is the bed first. By doing this if we haven't finish unpacking stuff we can rest first. This will make you think that bed is really important. So get it :)

Thanks for the advice. I like the idea that you bought a bed before anything else. Good for you. What happened in my husband's case was he didn't get anything new at all. Inherited much of it from family. Absolutely no way would that've happened if I'd known him then. In fact, we wouldn't have moved in here in the first place but anyway, that's by the by. I shall keep you posted if I ever get round to buying a new bed. It has to be new, none of this second-hand rubbish!

Oh yes, I agree with you there. We were once persuaded to be a hard bed because it was supposed to be good for bad backs, that I tend to suffer from. Well that advice could have been more wrong. I didn't sleep properly for many months before going back to a better sprung mattress. OK, it was quite expensive but well worth it becaue I started to sleep better from then on . _Derek

My last bed has a really comfortable mattress, but something about the bed frame causes it to jiggle constantly when somebody else gets in, moves around, etc. But I'm not sleeping in that bed any more. :D

I bought a new mattress a couple of years ago, and like you, I was curious about the memory foam mattresses. I couldn't find much information, but a few people said they were warm in the winter. That got me to thinking they would be hot in the summer, so I opted for a regular mattress. I can pile on more blankets in the winter, but I can't sleep when it's hot.

Yes, I heard that too. I'm convinced that the two most comfortable beds I've slept in were memory foam mattress versions, both in Dublin and Las Vegas. My, they were comfy but I haven't actually asked anyone at both hotels if they were indeed memory foam mattreses. Silly me!!

Try flipping the mattress... I sleep on a 20+ year old futon mattress and still find it very comfy, but then, being a cat, I've been known to fall asleep on the floor... =^..^=

Best place to be, the floor. My Flojo is there right now. I'll be washing the bedding when I can be ar*ed (probably during the week) so I shall turn the mattress over then. Thanks.

I don't know much about the various beds you are describing. But i too am in the same predicament as you. When i got the children's bed a new mattress i was told by the shopkeeper that up to age 40 we can use a soft mattress.Later i was informed by him that a combination of foam and coir(made from coco nut extract) is effective for those of us above 40 years.

These are an example of what's available in this country (shown in the link below). Not cheap but you do get what you pay for. A brand I do not have anything to do with is Airsprung as I think they're cheap and nasty compared to Silentnight or Sealy. My Mum bought a Silentnight bed a few weeks ago and it took her a few nights to get used to it, mainly due to the fact her previous bed was so uncomfortable..she'd actually got used to being like that so to lie on a bed that was better for her back, etc, was a bit of a culture shock to start with. She finds it difficult getting out of bed now lol. http://www.silentnight.co.uk/products

It is usually a sure sign when your bed becomes uncomfortable to you. It may not be necessary to get rid of the whole bed, but a new mattress might just be what you need. When you are not comfortable in the bed you sleep on, your body may eventually pay the price.

Do you know a "Banig" my friend? It is a native mattress made out of woven palm leafs here in the Philippines. Well sleeping in this mattress is really tough, but if you used to sleep in it, you body will soon adjust to it. The good thing is you are stil sleeping in this smooth ans soft bed of your. But then if you can afford to buy a new bed then why not if you feel uncomfortable with that one you have.

I've never heard of a "Banig" before. What a great name! Thanks for explaining what it is to me. I guess animals make the same kind of bed with leaves and such-like. I've seen chimps on television make little nests of large leaves and I must say, they look really comfy!!

Hi Janey, in my country, you can buy the bed separately from the mattress , I prefer the antique narra (hard wood) type of bed because they are so durable and lasts for generations and become more beautiful with age, they do not have springs but a "solehiya" (don't know if I spelled it right) or like a woven thing under made of native materials so it's more practical in our warm tropical climate. It's the mattress I'm more concerned about, I see to it that I get a good quality one and always check for sagging, I also had a bad experience a long time ago where I get sneezing allergy every time I enter my room, till I noticed the mattress (foam) that I have been using for a long time was practically turning to powder, terrible Yes I agree with you to spend a little bit more money on a thing where we spend a large portion of our time and I think affects the quality of work we do in the morning

Thanks for the insight of beds in the Philippines. I really had no idea what you slept on but now I know. Yes, we can buy mattresses seperate from the frames (as we call them) but I reckon a new bed is the only answer, to be honest, due to its age. A new mattress would be a temporary solution but, for the initial outlay, it's best to save up for the whole lot. Hope that makes sense!

What a coincident I just ask to my uncle who have a big showroom of Furniture and they also sell the Bed Foam as well for replacement of my Bed along with Foam. He said come and choose one but I ask him to send one of his own choice and take the old one as well. I think you also go for it :D

The problem with me is that I can't afford to buy a new bed or mattress but I am an expert in researching different kinds. I don't get as depressed window-shopping online as I do in the "real" world. I hope you will like your new bed.
