Many are quite familiar with bribe. Have you ever given any bribe to anybody to get done your work, or forced to give. Though it is not a tendency, many are willingly or unwillingly have to give bribes. What you have to say on this?

In Indian system ,if you want to get your work done through government agencies then you will definitely have to part away with some of your hard earned money. I too have paid bribe to get my marriage certificate from the office of registrar of marriage .I felt too bad but i could not do anything as his subordinate directly asked for it.He put the money in my application file and sent to the office. We were called within 15 minutes and then i got my certificate.

The worst thing is, we have to bribe even for the those things we are legally right. Just they have made it a habit to bribe for doing their duties even. Actually, the government officials, especially registrar office people and sales tax persons make a good money by bribing and they are least bothered about their actual earnings. It is indeed a bonus in the name of salary, I think.

Hi dear, Thanks for your comments. It is true. Certain cases, we are helpless and we have to give, if our work is get done. Even I have strong view that we should not give a single rupee for those people. Unfortunately, if the work is done in time, we should pay for them. Also, in certain cases, we have to give for so many people as a share of it, even if we are supposed to get without paying. They can make us dance by saying that come tomorrow, this paper is not there that one is not there and so much of funs till we pay them. It is our curse of the society and I think it prevails most of the govt. offices. Thank-s

Hello my friend. I am not surprised to hear about bribing in India as reading through the other mylot folks responses here, and i will also include Romania in this category, where in some cases it is mandatory to prepare the bribe before you go to someone, as this applies to the doctor's office, to school, if you need them to be more cooperative, and sadly even in the legal system.

Yes dear, it is true. We are helpless and unless the authorities and the government are not strict we have to suffer from all such non sense. As you said, schools colleges and even for simple job from any office also are subject to bribe depend on the requirement. Giving and taking are equally take place. People who come with inaccurate or incomplete work are demanding or offering money. As this is considered as an accepted process, those who are really eligible also become a victim of such deeds. Is there any chance to improve such system here? I don't thing so. The intensity will go up and I don't think there will be an escape from this, because all are not genuine. Thank-s

Hi Sid, You are absolutely right. Two days before I just posted this topic and on Saturday I had some work in a municipal office, there they asked me to wait for 1 hr. and said you will get the work done, once person is come to his seat. I waited, waited, waited, person some and gone, still waited, finally one office boy come and told me you are you waiting now, he came and gone, now come on Monday. Do one thing, can you do …………………, then I will keep it ready with another officer, and you can get it by 3:30. How is it? So, I though, I should have to delete the post that I come up with myLot. As Mrs Sid, said, it is the favour form our Govt. officers, that, save time, save energy, save money ‘for others’ – pay the bribe and get your work done so soon and nicely. This is only one example out of millions - Shame, shame, shame. Thank-s

So many times! I hate this system of bribing but cannot go against it as I am not a cinema hero to fight against it. See, the whole political system of India is corrupted and we cannot escape from it. There is a price for anything and everything in each and every level and follow it properly.......you can move easily. I feel shame about it but without any help!

Yes! they will delay everything until you make up your mind to give out what they ask for. Sure, it is not one person's share and it travels to the higher authorities too. We are badly in need of a good leader who can throw light to our prosperity. Nobody is perfect at the present. And we have no other option than to pray to the God.

Hi dear, It is really a shame, shame, shame. But it is a matter of money and we all given the chances to do so. If our system works properly, we could eliminate upto a certain extent. No one can root out the system. If we are not giving, our work will not get done. I was looking for a ration card. They made me to run for 12 and more times and didn’t given it so far. They were openly asking money and I was totally true and all the documents were intact, they find something or other – like reasons and I could not get. Finally, they asked to give half of it, and had to pay for them. Shame from my side, but I had no option, but had to pay. Also, now I am running for a loan and 3 months over, still they are make to dance for it. About 150 pages of documentation is already done, and still demanding. I think one day they will declare that I am not existing!!! Thank-s

I haven't bribed somebody, and haven't been bribed as well. Actually, there's a very thin line between bribery and giving gifts. Most people here give gifts to people who are nice or helpful. Like for example, my mum. At the hospital, when the cashier or the secretary is very nice to her, she gives them food the next time she visits. Of course these people tend to favor her and be very nice to her. She can ask for favors easily like writing her name on the list for appointments instead of her going to the hospital to enlist her name. In our culture, this is not bribery. This is just an act of kindness. Bribery is more on giving someone money or something expensive in exchange of gaining favor that you previously did not have, or you want that person to do something for you that shouldn't be done for you. Like breaking the rules, the code of ethics, etc.

Hi dear, What you are doing here is fine and it is with our children and feel fun. What I meant is fraud though bribing and it become major scams and by paying or doing favours, we are getting done our work, it is illegal or the like. However, now-a-days, to get our legal work also we have to pay or bribe to other. Giving and taking bribe is also illegal and against law. But it is an every day practice in many of the Government offices and places like that. Thanks for your response. Thank-s

Isn't shopping pretty much a bribe? Yes, I've done it. I've said things like "Can you please go get me a cookie while you're at the store, I'll give you money for it and a little extra."

Bribing is the same as bartering, an exchange for goods and services. Bribes for kids...usually don't work! The "want" to do something good has to come from the inside. Offering stickers, candy and other rewards, are great for getting kids on the right track, but what will you give them when they outgrow these things? Money? What if you can't afford that? And is there ever enough to make them happy? No, they should be taught that it's the feeling inside (intrinsic reward) is what they should be working for.

Hi dear, I think in your place the habit is not so painful and it look like so moderate. But in our place, it is so popular as equal to a criminal nature. Example, suppose you need to go for a driving licence. You are ready to the office with all papers and can give the application and can take part the test as per the schedule. But here, if you go directly in this way, you may have to go for 15 times, minimum. Nobody will care over there. There are mediators and agents for it. Unless you contact any of them, you will not get it done so easily. It will take its own time, once all other’s are get over. I did the same and after waiting for 3-4 hrs. they asked me to come next ….days, I went again on that particular day, waited 3-4 hrs. and finally one person approached and told me, do so & so……, I did the so & so…., I got a call immediately and got the work done!!! So, it is the matter. This is a simple example only, but the things here work in such a way. Go straight, nothing will happen. If you get done your work, even though it is fully legal, they will rag you as much they can and finally have to surer to get the work done. Our principles and all will remain in our pocket only, once matter comes straight. Thank-s

Bribery is not good, but sometimes, we don't use bribes as 'bribes'. Many would use the term as 'rewards' in order to get something done, or do something. Bribery need not come in the form of money, it can be anything as long as it's beneficial to both parties. Everybody is guilty of some forms of bribery, just that it's not that serious.

Hi dear, I think it is not affected you people so severely. It was many years back, once I come out of my course completed, I got an offer from a college for the post of economics lecturer. The compensation I had to pay Rs 5 lakshs! Also, for a school teacher, it was 2 lakhs and a school room expense also. Even now, one of my school mate’s daughter got an offer in a convent school for a primary school teacher and they asking bribe of 5 laksh now! It is not a joke, and I happened to know 6 moths back. They are preparing to pay for it and the school authorities are bargaining with someone else with the same post. I mentioned the college lecturer post above, and I was unable to pay the money upfront and one of my friend got it by paying the same. The funny matter is that he paid the Rs 5 laksh, and after a month time, he took 7 lakhs and given the post to someone else. However, the college authorities are on demand of 5 lakhs, they got it. As long as the person is qualified, they don’t mind who come in the place. So, it is the magic of ‘bribe’ and it is very much around even now in our place with different shapes and names!! Thank-s

but why do we still do it even possible until tomorrow, and so on. to the point that what we are doing this to our culture. a corrupt culture. ultimately create our understanding that considers it normal to happen. understanding is what is known as permisifisme attitude. certainly be a hassle because we already consider it fair. should not that right?

Hi dear, Here no one want to pay bribe in the normal way of life. By bribing, someone loses and someone gains. A job of 7 days gets done within 2-3 days. A correction updated within 5 days gets done in 2 hrs. But to pay. In my case itself. I am running for a loan, for the last 3 months and the documentation is not yet completed. For me all are done within 5 days of time and now they are upto me asking for this paper, that paper (in fact which is not required). I have to go to so many offices to get it. As a full time employee, there are limits and either I have to take leave or wait for Saturday to come. I am doing all so legally and still they are making me to dance. So, if I am ready to pay, I could have done 2 month earlier. Spending lots of money and wasting that much time, I have not reached anywhere. So, if we move in its proper way, this is the result. They make us to wait and that is all. However, it is again, happening and comes out as big scams and in many cases, it will not get disclosed because the share of bribes goes to various people. Recently, we have major bank scams, real estate scams, etc and it become major issues for the last 2-3 weeks. I think it will go on and there is no end to. Thank-s

You know, I will proudly say that the traffic police here is the symbol of the bribe, we were not bribe them, but they are asking, every time they always stabbed the vehicle by finding a few mistakes, just to get some money, here, the police are not protectors community, but more as an enemy of the people of identical small. It is already popular in the general population, whatever the case would you give to the police, the advances are the guarantee for resolving cases, without money, a case can be completely impossible.

Hi dear, You are right. Especially the traffic police always bribe anywhere and they tempted to do with all people also those who have proper papers with them. They will find some fault or traffic cross, anything and till they get some money, they will follow us and have to give. Just yesterday, I had to get a property documents to be submitted to the local municipal office (a transfer deed to be filed with them). I have purchased the flat and the copy of the agreement has to be submitted to them after attestation. It require maximum of 5 mts. and the person made me to run for 3-4 times as everything was intact and he could not get any extra from me. Finally he found said one tax receipt is not included along with the copy and I have to collect and come. Finally he said, ok I will do it for your and have to give some.... and because of the nuisance, I had to say yes, and the moment he got it singed from the officer and got the receipt. In fact we are not paying and we are forced to do unwillingly and even if we are alright, they can find any fault with us and do it. This is a plague and all knows it. From bottom to top level his is happening and it is a silent and dangerous non sense and I don't think it can be stopped because the giver and taker has their own stand on it, though it is not advisable. Than-s

Hi, It is our destiny. It is one of the curse of our nation. I think our country is number one in this matter. Wherever we go, to get done our genuine work also have to pay for it. It is a joint venture all of them from bottom to top level. At certain times we cannot avoid it because based on this bribing only all are living. Even though they get a smart salary, they will kill the public by demanding the bribes in all ways. What to do. The government knows it and for the name sake, they will catch hold of one or two cases in a year. But I know that all are making fools to the common public. Whatever happens, we have to suffer from all. THank-s

I guess to every Indian its not a new thing as we openly see people bribing around us. Thats the way it works here in India. and Ofcourse i have bribed so many watchman, police etc..at times. Avoid problems!! We dont actually have an alternative option if we need someone's help for our important works to be done fast.Everyone knows it is bad but there is nothing much we can do about it. at least in india. we have to live with it.

Hi dear, Yes, you are absolutely right. Just few hours back, while I am walking towards office, I saw the traffic police man was getting some notes from a bicker. This just open in Mumbai and I felt so bad on this, as you said, it is the need of time and even if we are legit, genuine, and legal, we have to do it for avoid time saving and get rid of extra problems. If we are strict, we can avoid for the time being, but who has the time to run around. In the case of the biker also, he may have the licence and papers and everything, but if he go for a bargain or anything, the traffic police can pull him for something else, say, rash driving, over speed, signal cross or anything like, so better to pay it and avoid the rest. In this case, who is the culprit and how we can justify these things? Thank-s
