Okay, my teen daughter is about to make me crazy wanting me to play board games with her all the time as she is bored because it is too cold outside for her to play or ride horses. What are some activities that she could do at home that would keep her occupied. She doesn't read well and she doesn't like to do crafts. HELP_ any ideas?

HOUSEWORK!!!! I think it is nice that she wants to play with you and not just plug in to something electronic all of the time. Get her some houseplants to take care of. Surely there is some kind of creative activity she likes. Does she have any friends that she would like to have come play board games with her?

She does chores around the house. I enjoy the fact that she wants to play games with me, but I have other things that I need to do as well. She does have some friends who come over occasionally, but most prefer to come in the summer so they can be outside and ride horses and enjoy the country life.

Books on tape would help her read better. Many libraries will loan the book and the tape together. Solitaire, there are many games she could learn to pay herself. I played solitaire cards as a kid. I learned to bake and to cook as a teen. Starting an indoor garden would also be an idea.

Money always seems to play a role in the things that we do doesn't it? I hadn't thought about books on tape and was wondering at first how it would help her to read, but I might try it by getting the book and the tape. She does cook and she loves to play solitaire both with cards and on the computer. She really is good about keeping herself occupied if she truly has too, but she just wants to be with me.

I almost forgot, putting on some music and moving to it or dancing.
If I had the $ right now, I'd belong to the YMCA (we don't have a YWCA here) and go swimming, weight lifting, etc. If I had more $, I'd go to T'ai Chi class. Right now, it's just move to music and videotapes or DVDs.

Some libraries have books on tape. Having the books read to her on tape, she can have it read to her over and over again until she learns the most common words. Doesn't work for everyone, but it does improve listening skills which is also very important.

She does like them. I hadn't given them much thought. I might get her one this weekend and see if she enjoys it. Thanks!

Get her her own computer & download some board games on it. She can play against the computer. I joined yahoo's game site. You can play against other humans or play against the computer. The games are $19.95 each or if you join for $6.95 a month, you get one free game every month or it's only $6.95 per game. At the end of the year they marked them ALL down to $9.95 with no limit on how many you can buy. I play against my computer most of the time as I don't like playing against people who are better players than I am!!!!

She does have her computer in her room but no internet on it. I need to manage what she does on it and so she doesn't have internet there. I might try to find computer games, but she doesn't like them as well as board games.

You are in a rough place..lol...I would just tell her I needed her help cleaning the house..mine always find something to keep them busy when I bring that up
That really is tough spot since she doesn't like to read or do crafts. Maybe you could do a movie night or ohh...I know..dress-up!!! You could put on each other's makeup and do each other's hair...my girls love that!!! It's been forever since we have done "dress-up"..I may have to get them in on that tomorrow night.

She doesn't mind to help out around here. She has chores and does them and she is not a girly girly so she doesn't do dress up.

LOL Jen so true, I remember telling my daughter I know what you can do clean up the kitchen, since you have nothing to do and feels so bored. I was amazed on how a nap came in handy at that point.

I remember those days myself! I was horse crazy. If I wasn't riding them I was dreaming of them. There were too many days I had to be away from them with nothing else to do. One Christmas a kind aunt sent me a magazine subscription to Horse World. I was in heaven! Then, the next Christmas she sent me a book on horses. This continued until she passed away. I began to take interest in reading, until a teacher told me to stop writing every book report about horses! So then I started writing about the people, careers and businesses involved with horses.

We are actually using horse magazines and books for her Language Arts program this year in school. she is currently studying Lipizzaner Horses and the Spanish Riding School. Great stuff!! I might get her doing a book report or something to go along with school about horses. Maybe she could do a horse collage or something. Thanks for the ideas!

Actually we decided to feed three boys instead. LOL I should have been born in a different state, had been 8 inches shorter and had different parents. The kind that encouraged my activity. But I spend plenty of time giving people ideas to work with them. I used to train horses and teach people to ride them so I am involved with a nonprofit organization who use horse therapy for all kinds of conditions.

Hmm... my kids aren't as old as yours. But I know your pain of trying to find something for them to do in winter. I bought the Wii one year for Christmas and it keeps us occupied some times. And of course my kids are younger so they do things like color, watch movies, read box, play, Dance Dance Revolution.... They do go out for a lil bit on the weekends to go sledding in the front yard for say 30 minutes & sometimes help w/ shoveling. Perhaps she can go to a friends house and spend some time? Grandparents? Cousins?

Doesn't have any cousins close and her grandparents live with us and next door. Not much visiting there. She does go sledding occasionally, but she doesn't do a lot of it as she is bored when alone.

I never thought about letting her start a blog as that would help her with writing assignments and with school overall. She does have chores to do and she is usually done in a hour with them.

I would actually sit and write down with her what she likes and what her interests are. She might be surprised on the number of things she is actually interested in. However, when and if you decide to obtain any supplies for things she may like she has to give them a fair chance, in others not sit for an hour and say I do not like it lets try something else.
Kids at this age are very creative but at times require a bit of motivation. Good luck with this and happy entertaining.

You are right. We bought her a guitar for Christmas, but she doesn't seem very interested in it either.

It's not easy, but maybe this is the time for her to get the habit to reed. You could find interesting books with good illistrations. Maybe she'll get the taste to draw too.
And the chores - this is a good idea. Finally, I don't know how cold it is, but I think that it is good for the health to go and play outside.

I believe that it is good to be outside too, but it has been cold and wet here and so I won't let her out long. She is not an artist and she does chores. I have been trying to get her to read, but she gets frustrated as she is not good at it and constantly has to ask me what words are.
