Warning Gross - Vomiting Yellow?

Warning! This is going to sound gross. So if you have a weak stomach you may want to stop reading. Starting on Saturday morning my daughter was vomiting. It was normal vomit (peaches) that she had for breakfast. Then it was just spit coming up. So she didn't eat anything all day until dinner time when she had some soup and a half of a grilled cheese sandwich. So I figured she must be feeling better since she's eating. Yesterday (Sunday) she ate some food throughout the day but she still didn't look right to me. Now this morning after she got up she was first vomiting spit (dry heaves) and then all of a sudden it was bright yellow vomit. She was in the bathroom for a couple of hours, poor thing. I called the doctor's and they said that the yellow is actually bile! They said that it's common and their is a gastro virus going around that could last from 3-5 days. They also said it's normal to be vomiting the one day, then nothing the next day and then starting all over again like in my daughter's case. So they said to give my daughter Gatorade but only the clear lemon lime flavor in small quantities. So that's what is happening right now. Have you or any of your children ever vomited bile?

Yes, I have and it is a nasty feeling. My granddaughters did this when they visited everyone for Thanksgiving. They go home, they get sick, they act better, then they start vomiting again. We often drink gingerale for stomach upsets, but my granddaughter does not like it and will not. My daughter was sick as well, but she got better quicker.

It is not so much the winter that causes us to get sick, but the fact that we have Thanksgiving and Christmas where people will travel and share their illnesses with others and we then get to be exposed to a new illness, and then we are inside, close together, and out of routine. Possibly we do not use good food handling processes either. When I was young I always got sick at least once between Halloween and New Years, and sometimes for every one of the holidays. I feel like it was all the extra sugar, and then we would fix way too much food and often leave it sitting our instead of putting it away. I liked the suggestion from Owl Wings of freezing the fluids.

I've heard of a lot of people being sick lately. That's one the reasons why I hate the winter. Too many illnesses hanging around. My daughter doesn't like gingerale either. Thankfully she's drinking the lemon-lime Gatorade right now.

Yes...some of these flu viruses are nasty...last year I had the flu and at one point thought I was going to pass out...I was in the bathroom and had to crawl into the living room to the couch....I haven't had the flu so bad in many years. I hope by now your daughter is feeling better...I had a friend who had it last week...she was miserable!

I've had the flu where I've felt like passing out too. It really does wipe a person out. The worse is when you feel like that and you still have children at home to look after and no one around to help you out. Apparently a lot of people have this bug that's going around. I guess it's just that time of year.

I had a very violent D&V attack a month or so ago which was either an infection or a reaction to chemotherapy or, maybe, a mixture of both. Anyway, it was so bad that I was in hospital for 11 days on rehydration, mineral supplement and antibiotic drips. That was the first time I had ever seen bile (in my case, a very unnatural bright green! When it's less severe, it is yellowish). Thankfully, I am now completely recovered (though I do have a major operation to look forward to!) Gatorade or 7-up or something similar is often recommended for D&V because it contains sugar and, of course, water. I found that 7-up frozen into iced lollies (you might call them popsicles) worked very well because I also had a very bad case of thrush.

It's really amazing what our body goes through when we feel like that. It can be pretty scary too. I think maybe later I'll make some of those popsicles you mentioned. Hope your operation goes well for you. Take care.

have I seen it... yes, was it a kid - no, it was me... I have a problem, that once I start to throw up, I almost always have to have meds to stop, and when you are down to nothing, then it can become very uncomfortable and - yes - disgusting.

The good news is that I haven't been that sick since I had my gall bladder removed. Honestly, that's one of the best things to happen to me in years!

omg, so thats it. i didnt vomit but i hardly ever do. its just that my stomach problems take the other turn. anyway. i had something like that so it must be an epidemic since several people have said the same lately. i had to take antibiotics though to straighten it out. i do hope your daughters better soon. if not maybe they can give her some antibiotics.

Bile is not uncommon to vomit if there is a virus present. My son did many times when he was growing up and always scared the crap out of me. You were right tho, to call the dr. Good going there. Shows you had the sense to make sure where as some people would ignore it. God bless you.

Sorry to hear that you went through that with your son but then again it makes me feel better to hear that it's very common. Thanks for your response.

I'm sure how common it is, but it is not unheard of either. I spent 15 yrs. of my life working in a day care and I saw it a lot. Just always remember when someone vomits a lot try to keep them hydrated with water or whatever the sick person might try to get down, And there is alway Pepto.... hugs, quita

Sure, my sons and I and nearly everyone I know has vomited bile. When the stomach has rid itself of everything else, the bile is left and comes up. It's important to stop this ASAP since when everything is out of the stomach the digestive acids can eat the stomach lining. I hope your daughter feels better by now!

I never even knew that bile was common. This is the first that I've seen it so of course I was a little alarmed. She actually had some of the Gatorade and a popsicle. So far so good.

shar that is just like the doctor told you normal, and yes I have numerous times over the years when I have had a stomach virus. this is just the normal way our bodies handle this mean virus and nothing to get alarmed at at all. Hope your daughter is feeling much better now.

I'm glad that it's normal. I just never saw that before so it kind of threw me off. Hope you don't catch the bug either. Stay well.

Poor girl..I hope she starts feeling better soon, because its never fun to be sick like that. I've had that happen to me before too, and its just something that irritates your stomach and intestines, I guess there's really not much you can do but let it run its course. The gatorade they suggested is to help keep her hydrated, because with all that vomiting she's doing she's losing all her fluids, its so she won't get any sicker. I hope everything is going alright..Good Luck.

You got that right - no fun being sick at all. She's drinking some of the Gatorade which helps. So far so good.

This is pretty common and the gatorade is a good choice, it contains electrolytes that that will help her body until it returns to normal. Not fun for any one to be that sick.

A lot of people use the Gatorade it seems. I just didn't know that you should only drink the orginal lemon lime kind when you're sick.

I guess that I have to say that my family has been lucky that neither the children nor myself has ever vomited up bile. However, there have been times when the kids have gotten stomach bugs and they will vomit until there is nothing left in their little stomachs. At that point they will start to throw up a little bit of stomach acid. I really don't think there is anything that is worse than throwing up stomach acid because of the fact that it burns so much.

This sounds quite normal and common. Her digestive system is a bit sensitive right now with some form of virus. My son use to be very delicate when ever he got a simple flu and or colds. So pretty much anything he would eat and or drink would come up in bile form. I do hope she feels better soon, as she has to be a bit weak from the vomiting. Oh and by the way as parents nothing like hearing about bile frightens us, as we deal with so much ickies when it comes to our children, in fact it saddens us to read and or hear when other children are sick because we know exactly the feeling, as parents we hurt when we hear that children are sick. Take care Shar and I hope she gets better soon so she can begin to feel like her happy and energized self.
