I mainly grow cacti and succulents (OK succulents including cacti). Some are hardy, even in Canada, but most grow indoors and go out into a greenhouse in the spring (as soon as it's warm enough, a lot are out there now but they'll probably have to come back in soon). They do flower except for a few screwed up ones (unless you count Welwitchia mirabilis which is a gymnosperm). Unfortunately not many flower in winter. I think the only thing I've got flowering at the moment is Aloe variegata. Manny succulents will flower when quiet small: Rebutia, Mammillaria, Gymnocalycium, all Messembs, crassulaceae, stapeliads, some Aloes and Euphorbias and many more. There are epiphytic cacti which grow on trees in rain forests. They tend to not be very fleshy or spiny, often having leaf-like stems, and often have spectacular flowers. The best known is Schlumbergera, the Christmas cactus. They like similar conditions to orchids so you might like to mix some in with your orchid collection.

Flowers and candles fill a home with both warmth and vitality. Beginning in spring I take in flower cuttings from the garden. In winter, a small candle keeps me company in the kitchen. It makes up for the lack of early evening light.

I absolutely love candles. I've got several in every room of the house (and an abundance in the bathroom). Scented, unscented; pillars, tea lights, votives, jar candles; candles in every shape and colour. My favourite is one I can only burn when I'm home alone, since my housemate complains it smells too good and makes her hungry (it's a pecan caramel scented candle, yummy).

When I was a little child, I liked to plant different kinds of grass. I hardly plant flowers although I like them. Now I have little indoor plants at home and that's all. If one day I had a garden, I would plant some vegetables and herbs. I like to have the harvest

I love growing flowers and I can say that I'm pretty green thumbed too. I used to have many orchids, roses etc in my garden, but since I move, I left them all behind in my parents house Now, we're going to move to our first house and I'm glad I have some space to grow some plants. I want to grow poppy and gerbera daisy, but I have to find out if the will grow in my country's climate first

Flowers are something that really do increase the beauty in the world. It is very hard to imagine the world like it is without flowers. When they start popping up in the spring time, it really adds some color to the world and makes things less dark and dreary. That is why the winter season is not my favorite, as the lack of flowers can really make things depressing.

I was always like you, not caring for winter very much because it can be depressing. Lately, I've decided to "take back winter" by trying to come up with outdoor plantings that can provide some beauty even in winter. Some, just from the shape of the plant, others from evergreen foliage. The most beautiful thing in my garden this year during snowfall, was the sight of my bird feeders covered in birds, other birds sitting in the cedar trees or on the posts of our fence, and still others hopping around in a small evergreen shrub I'd just planted. It's a small area still, and the rest of the garden looks very bare, but it was a start. Something I want to try next year, is a "meadow" garden with different ornamental grasses. I've seen some beautiful winter pictures of them.

Yeah I also love having flowering plants around the house but I guess the climate here in our place is not that viable for planst to grow indoors because the climate can be very hot at summer and very damp during rainy seasons. Plus the fact that I have no space outside to put garden as well.

There are plenty of plants that like hot damp conditions. Sounds perfect for many orchids, Hoyas, bromiliads and epiphytic cacti.

I like flowers too. I think most of us like flowers, just as we all like beautiful things in this world. And sometimes flowers are not only make our environmennt more pleasing, but can be essential to our health. For example, in the houses with new decoration, we 'd better plant some plants which have the function of absorbing methanal. And some flower can also cure some diseases too. Of course, not all flowers can be put in bedrooms. There are some flowers which can emit harmful chemical to our health. So we can plant these flowers in the yards.Actually, there are lots of knowledge when it comes to flowers.

What flowers emit chemicals harmful for health. I suppose some people are allergic to pollen and things but it normally isn't pretty flowers that are the problem? There's an old wives tale that plants in the bedroom are bad because they use oxygen. Most plants close their stromata at night. I think the exceptions are things like cacti, which release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide at night. Plants' metabolism is so slow compared to mammals that it really doesn't make a difference, your spouse or even your cat is going to use far more oxygen than the window full of plants.

Yep. Flowers are important. If we don't have flowers there are nothing to give girls but chocolate and chocolate alone is not enough.

Hello changjiangzhibin89, Oh how I am waiting for spring to grow my flowers and try again for the third time to grow blueberry bushes. I miss the flowers during the winter and so cold and drabby and dark and stale. The smell of flowers just wakes me up and I feel springy and and want to enjoy the outdoors a whole lot more. Thanks and have a great day! Sincerley unique16

Mm, now you've gotten me started flipping through my seed and garden catalogs for all the blueberries. I'm not certain whether to get high-bush or low-bush varieties, and I don't yet know the difference between them. Of course, I'll have to make sure to get something that can stand hot and humid summers. And hopefully will also be cat-tolerant, since I expect they'll be climbing the poor plant instantly.

Yeah flowers are essential in our life coz flowers feed the bees and the bees make honey. It's all about the ecosystem my good friend. Like you i like flowers a lot and i like growing them. I have roses and different kinds of flowers in my garden that i don't know what it's called. I just plant them and watch them grow beautifully each day. I feel good whenever i am in the garden.

I'm not fond of flowers but I do like orchids in different forms. I want to grow them in my backyard but Orchids hesitant to grow with me. (lol) Some of my friends told me that I don't have a green thumb when it comes to planting ornamental plants. Do you believe about green thumb thing?

Yeah, I can grow plants but my wife can't. Do you tend to over fuss things or neglect them? People who neglect plants can usually grow succulents. There are some succulent orchids but I don't know much about them.

Like you, I feel that flowers are essential, and not just for the physical health they can promote, but also the spiritual. I'm longing for the ground to dry out enough after a recent snow-melt so I can get out in my yard and start prepping my garden. It'll be my first garden in front of the new home, so there's a lot of work that needs doing. I can barely wait to start! Every day, I dig through garden and seed catalogs, read tons of gardening books (all checked out from my local library), and start drawing up garden wishlists. Of course, the majority of things I want to do will have to wait, due to financial constraints, but it's fun to go ahead and start dreaming and coming up with lots of different plans. I enjoy beautiful flowers like roses and plan to include a few in my garden, but my biggest interest right now is flowers that are good for birds and other wildlife. I want plants that produce edible seeds (and some veggies for me, too) as well as providing shelter for birds.
