Recently my mother has been detected with high level of TSH and she is started with meds to treat it. This got me into having mine tested and luckily I am cleared of any kind of impending disease. I got myself checked after almost 1 year. What about you? Did you get yourself checked recently? How often do you go for health check ups? Happy living healthy.

It is two years since I had my blood tested for the usual routine checkup. TSH is the THyroid test isn't it? I was asked to get this and I had a student friend who was an endocrynologist and on seeing the report she told me it was fine but this was some 8 or 9years back. It is unbelievable how time flies. I also had a routine gyn test last ear. What were your mother's symptoms thta made her undergo the test?

Actually, it was part of the routine health checkup that she does every six months. However, this time she went for a comprehensive 'sugar scan' test that included blood for thyroid testing. She says that she never went for one and may be she has been having it since a long time but it never got detected. Anyway, good thing that it has this time. Coming to her symptoms, she, slim and tall, is quite active in our family and works 24x7 which is unlikely of hypothyroidism. How are you doing Kala?

That's so great to know! The little one must be keeping you on your toes always. Who said you need physical exercise! Just enjoy every bit of it and pamper the little hero as much as you can. A Big hug for him.

may i know what TSH means? My husband and i, just recently had our laboratory exams to know whether we are still on the normal level of health. We always do this, after the Christmas season, because as we know , this is the season of eating those creamy, salty and rich foods. Luckily, all my lab results are within normal range despite of all those foods i ate during the holidays. Unfortunately though, my husband has high cholesterol! He was so sad because he ate in moderation of those foods while i ate in plentiful of everything. Yet, i had it all in normal level! I guess it's because i don't stress myself so much and it doesn't run in our genes to have high cholesterol!

TSH is the 'Thyroid Stimulating Hormone', a blood test considered by doctors the only test needed to diagnose and manage an underactive or overactive thyroid, also known as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. I think it's good thing that you get yourself checked every year after Christmas. And whatever high levels of cholesterol your husband has can be controlled through diet and modified lifestyle. Is he taking any meds? He can also take omega free fatty acid supplements which have high antioxidant qualities. Another thing SIMPLYD, men run higher risk than women for cholesterol related diseases and that could be the reason you have normal and your hubby has higher levels.

Hi Mimpi, Glad to know that your health check up came out well. I'm sure that in your mother's case the TSH levels will come down quickly to normal levels with the required treatment. I got my health check up done a couple of years back, and I cannot term it as an annual one as it was done after 3-4 years. I've been meaning to go and get one done for some time now, but for some reasons, maybe its thought of discovering something even though it may be simple, may be dettering me. I have been seeing the doc off and on, but I guess I should not be postponong this any more and need to make sure I get it done periodically. Thanks for bringing this up

You are right. It's a mind set issue really, Health should be a top priority. You know, as much as we are all educated and know its importance, yet it seems to take a back seat. There are many like me, and we need a jolt sometimes or a constant reminder to get it done. Whatever the reason, its no excuse..... Medication and its side affects do tend to slow down our activities. But its important we do not get bogged down with them. Your mother being an active person, is a good thing and she will get the better of it and the levels will be in control.

You should since you need to. Prevention is certainly better than cure. isn't it? So, what's making you wait? And thanks for your wishes for my mom. She is the most active person in the family and she is always on her toes. I just wish she doesn't feel the deficiency with the meds.

Hi Mimpi! You have raised a very pertinent question. I fully agree with you that one must go for regular health check ups. You see many people take care of their gadgets/vehicles and give annual maintenance contracts for its upkeep and maintenance and if any defect occurs in their vehicle, they get it rectified immediately. However, as far as their own health is concerned, they keep ignoring it and avoid going to Doctor either for check ups/treatment. A timely detection of any disease can save us from many problems. One should not ignore one's health at any cost. Whenever, any slight problem occurs with me, I take the advice of the treating Doctor and if he advices any tests etc., I immediately go for it. A very Good Post! Have a great day!

That's much sensible deepak. I really appreciate. I think a routine health regime works wonders for our body and if you are careful about a few things in our lifestyle and modify them for the better we would actually be living healthy.

Hi mimpi! I don't go near as much as I am supposed to. I scheduled a checkup in July because it had been forever since I had one. I don't even know how long it had been..two or three years maybe. I am so consumed with things sometimes that i forget about myself..lol. My girls, my job, my b/f, school, my dogs...I always say..oh I'll take care of myself next month or next week but there is always something else to take care of. I had two weeks off in July so I scheduled an appointment. I was good but I did have an irregular EKG that scared the fire out of me. I follwed up with tests that checked out just fine though...whew..I was really scared. I'm trying to pay more attention to my health. It is very important.

What was wrong with the EKG? Do you remember? I am glad that you are going for a health checkup this July. Do keep us updated. You have to be in great health to take care of others in the family. And I am sure you will do well.

It's readings indicated an enlarged side. When I got my ultrasound, everything was fine. They said those EKG machines can be very sensitive to movement or anything so that may have been why it read that way.

I don't even remember, maybe it was one or two years ago- we just don't have the money for it, since a check up is more or less 15 dollars. My mom did have a check up and operation a few months ago and she's taking medicine now too. She says some of her joints hurt but she doesn't want to go to the doctor.

Oh, well I don't think that I have ever had a health check up! For one, I do not really trust the opinion of a medical doctor over my own knowledge of my body and two, I live a pretty healthy sort of a lifestyle in the first place, so there is no real need for a check up at this stage of my life. I may change this opinion as I get older but I will see how I go.

I'm ashamed to say that I don't visit the doctor's office nearly as often as I should. The last time that I had a routine examination was not too long after my son was born and he is four years old now. The reason that I don't go in as often as I should is because I don't have health insurance and I had a doctor leave a very bad taste in my mouth when I was a younger woman and that made me not really want to visit the doctors unless I was sick.

I used to work for a company that give their employees free health check ups as part of their benefits. It was done within the facility so it was very convenient. I have since moved on from that company, and currently work for one that doesn't have the same benefits. I have been here for almost 5 years.

That's really sensible of you. I think one should be aware to check himself of the illnesses and take action accordingly.

I only ever go to see my doctor when i feel that something is wrong, i do not like to waste there time when they are so busy. I rarely am ill but i do feel that nowadays there are so many things going on and you could both quickly and easily catch anything that it would be better to have a check up often, this would be extremely beneficial in many ways. This is now something that i am seriously considering, anything can strike you quickly so best to keep on top of things really.

Absolutely. We can actually keep off from a lot of diseases by being little conscious. Healthy living doesn't also just stop at the doctor's office. A natural and ongoing body care can help us deal with it better.

I rarely go for health check-ups. Honestly, i have no enough money for that. I would rather use the money to buy my basic needs like food and clothing.

Hi, i go for checkup once in a year. It is organized by the company. So the process is very quick and doctors are not serious and careful at all. By the way, the checkup only includes several items. I think your post is a good reminder for us to do regular checkup. Because when we feel bad, maybe it is too late to treat the disease.

Hi aprilsong (loved the username!), you are right. Health checkups make us knowledgeable about what's going on inside our body but a healthy body is only ensured through moderated lifestyle and I am sure you are doing your bit.

I live healthy, but I do not subscribe to the theories of Western Medicine, so I do not go for checkups. This is a religious tenet and at this moment in history we still have freedom of religion in my country. So, although I have had some checkups in the past when they were a legal requirement for some job or another (for instance, teachers are required to prove that they do not carry tuberculosis germs and that sort of thing), unless there is some legal necessity, I don't go. I do, however, make a real point of living a very clean lifestyle and eating wholesome and nutritious food, and especially living within the harmony of nature. Friends of mine who do themselves buy into the belief of checkups and that sort of thing are amazed when they see how I live, because it is very different from how they live in terms of what they eat and all. A friend dropped in this morning when I was just sitting down to breakfast and I had prepared what was for me, a HUGE breakfast consisting of half a plate of sauteed asparagus, a poached egg, a potato pancake, and a small glass of pomegranate juice. She exclaimed, "I would starve if I lived in your house!"

That tells a lot of about your health as well. I absolutely agree with you there. I do not endorse of gulping whole lot of pills and then indulging in an unhealthy meal. We cannot be healthy thus. Also, the children learn from our food habits and our diet and lifestyle influence in greater ways than we can imagine.

Hi Mim, It is so nice to see you again. I haven't been here much because of my health but I decided to try and keep in touch a little more. I've had health issues all my life and so it is not unusual for me to go to the Drs. on a regular basis. I also have blood work done every 6 months. At my age anyone who doesn't take their health seriously is only asking for trouble. So much of our health problems can be avoided or cured when caught early. I would urge any woman in their 40's to start paying attention to their bodies and take heed. If the slightest symptom occurs then have it checked out. Mim, I will see you again soon. Hugs, Leenie

It's so good to see you as well. Hope your son, sister and everyone close to you doing good. As you must be knowing, I am in health industry and that gives me an opportunity to deal with people living in rural India. I try to educate them on the pros and cons of being aware and being motivated. We can keep off from many illnesses by being motivated. You take care dear. Lots of love.
