Solo's teeth

So, today was the day that we FINALLY got Solo's teeth done. Unlike Taj and Pong, Solo never stopped eating, so we have been putting it off, but, no more! All his teeth are pulled, and they shaved his tail! Now, his tail should've been a source of pride, but it was, honestly, a matted mess. We'll still probably get him groomed, when he's all recovered, but we'll settle for the tail shave for now. You ever had to have a cat shaved for other than medical reasons? This is the worst I've ever seen a long haired cat, even Bawb wasn't this bad, he groomed up pretty!

hi ElicBxn may I ask a silly question and get a reasonable answer. Why does Solo have to have his teeth pulled, I am not up on Cat care as I thought cats needed their teeth to eat with like we do. see how little'I know about cat health? wow. I have never had a cat shaved but had a black male pure \black with long hair and oh my did he fuss the first time I brushed his fur but after that he seemed to enjoy it. He was a kitten when we found him and someone had abandoned him and he had bumps and sores all over him as someone had owned him and abused him. we worked hard to get his trust. our puppy seemed to help as Midnight would sleep on the side of our puppy swap.they never did fuss but got along like brothers. both were boys and they sort of grew u p together. Swap did not like to be brushed but he would stand still for it just grumbled a bit.Eventually we had to move inti an apartment . so we could not have pets so we found a really good home for Swap and Midnight. this was heartbreak for me and my family.

Taj's teeth - or lack of same
Solo, like Pong and Taj, has something called stomatitus. It acts like an allergy to plaque on the teeth, and while you can give them interferon and have their teeth cleaned regularly, it is cheaper in the long run to just have the teeth pulled. and, after their mouths heal, they do just fine without them No, they couldn't hunt, but these guys are house cats so that doesn't matter.

My two blond kitties have something wrong with their mouths, and we get the teeth cleaned fairly often. The vet has pulled some of Creamery's teeth, and says sometimes you just get cats that have these problems. I found myself wondering if he had caught the bacteria from Tiger, who is older. Anyway, I frequently make home made food for them, and they especially like home made yogurt, and the vet says it is good for them.

well, have to put it here since this ekoorb didn't make his own discussion - but the other toothless cats are eating dry, and I suspect that Solo will too once his mouth heals.

I have just been to the vet with one of my cats, Poppy, because she was having problems eating. She was growling and in obvious discomfort while eating, so I finally took her to the vets yesterday. I'd have taken her sooner, but I realised that she'd probably need to have teeth pulled and I needed to make sure that I had enough money in the kitty, (so to speak ) to pay the bill. Anyway, the vet said that they'd pull all of her teeth and commented that even though she was not an old cat, younger cats sometimes had this sort of trouble with their teeth. I'm hoping that the problem is not due to a bacterial infection which she might have passed on to the other cats through shared food bowls. That's something I'll have to ask the vet about when I take Poppy in to have her teeth pulled. Although they all get fed out of individual food bowls, they'll all swap about as if they think that one of the other cats might have something better than what they have! Anyway, I'll be taking her to the vets next Wednesday for this operation. I have to get her there by 9 in the morning, but I will be able to take her back home the same day - I'll pick her up in the afternoon. She'll not be a happy kitty - at least, not until her mouth heals.

I think he's happy not to have that heavy, matted weight on the end of his tail, but what he really is is HUNGRY!

I have never had to have a cat shaved. Of course most of mine have been shorthaired. Tiger gets combed every time he gets in my lap now. It has been the only thing that has gotten rid of the fleas. Even Frontline did not work. Creamery avoids me, because I have started combing him as well. I think the boys both have flea allergies that make their skin really bad, and they may have one flea, but their whole skin will be sore and flaky. I am so pleased to get Tiger under control, and Creamery will learn to enjoy combing. He is long haired though and it is harder. Creamery sometimes acts like he is in pain when he eats, but he eats more than the other two combined. It is funny as he is a small kitty.

the only other time I had to have a cat shaved, she came so matted they even had to shave her cheek hair! And Bawb's hair was falling out he was so starved, but the time I got Rio groomed, they didn't have to shave her, tho I've cut a few mats outta her fur myself.

Never really had problems with cats that I've had. But I had a scocker spaniel that always had matted fur on her legs. It not matter how often we brushed or washed her it was a mess especially in the summer when she was outside a lot. We ended up shaving her rather than just cutting off the matted mess.

My sister is on her third one, and I remember she would sometimes shave the first one, Joey's, bottom half because of the tangles his... well, we'd call them feathers in horse lingo, would get. Don't know if she's had to do that with her other two.

Wow Elic! Another cat to have all his teeth removed? Gosh, you have some cats with really bad teeth, don't you? I wonder what's causing so many of them and their teeth to go bad? How is he doing now since it's been a few days since it was done? About his tail, it's going to grow back looking really pretty. Poor thing, but it had to be done since it was so matted like that. Maybe he'll be able to keep it groomed this time around.

Well, its been almost a month and we are enjoying most of the "new and improved" Solo! The part we aren't enjoying is that he's now picking fights with the other cats! We keep being told that stomatitus isn't contagious, but... we seem to be having a lot of mouth problems

Awww, I hope Solo feels better soon. I'm sure he'll be much happier without the teeth, especially if they hurt. And, it sounds like as soon as he's better, he'll be eating again since he was still eating before the teeth were pulled. That's good. Yes, Kashmere was shaved twice in her lifetime. She had to be put under anesthetic to do it. She had the type of fur that was very long hair, but underneath was like duck down, very fine and would mat very easily. I did my best to keep cutting out any mats that would form, but it was hard for me to hold onto her by myself, haha, especially around the butt area. She would let me comb and cut for about 3 minutes, and then she was done. No sense trying to chase her down because we would fight like two kids, and she would always win by taking off, haha. The two times she was shaved, they bathed her, shaved her, and gave her the lion cut with extra fur around her paws, neck and a puff on the end of her tail, just like a lion would look. She really looked adorable and I'm sure felt much better.

Solo is a fighter, so I'm sure they were glad he was out to do it!

We had to have a lot of matts cut off of Oreo, but no shaving. He's so mellow he probably wouldn't have minded though.

Solo seems happy to be without the mats, I think they were concerned that the dirty mats might make him sick.

I have never had to have a cat shaved and never had their teeth pulled either. I did have a persian that had better be brushed fairly regularly or you woulf have a mess. He actually took pretty goof care of himself though..he also liked to be brushed.

I've never had a cat like to be brushed, and Solo barely tolerates being PET! But he's my "grand son" and I love him!

I have never had a cat shaved for medical reasons or other. A friend of mine used to get his cat shaved every summer. Her fur was VERY thick and he said it made it cooler for her. He is the only one I know that had a cat shaved for the summer. I know people that shave their dogs though. I guess it would be the same principle.

ordinarily I wouldn't have a cat shaved in the winter, but his coat isn't doing him a lot of good right now.
