My toe!

Well, 10 days of antibiotics got the infection out of my toe, but it was still hurting. The doctor asked if I had ever tried to take a sharp scissor to cut up from the edge of the nail to get the ingrown part. I explained that, while I have good vision, I can't pull my toe up to where I can see it with my reading glasses and where I can see it without my glasses, I can't reach it! So, he did it. It hurt, but not as bad as I thought it would. However, he says, that if this didn't do it, he'd have to numb the toe and cut more off Lets hope this does it. It was feeling much better within an hour so it might. You ever had an ingrown toenail? You have to go to the doctor for it? Did you have to have part of your nail bed "killed" to fix it? The roomie did a number of years ago!

I thank whatever Gods are watching over me that I have never had an ingrown toe nail. Those are just nasty things. I am sorry that you have to undergo such a pain.

An ugly little reminder to keep your foot care up. Do you have a regular podiatrist? Perhaps it is he that should be minding that toe on a regular basis, especially if you have diabetes. (I just got diagnosed )

despite my age and being over weight, I'm not diabetic... no I don't have a regular podiatrist, I'd have to be referred by my GP, but my GP did it himself.

Yes, I have! A little over a year ago, I had an infected ingrown toenail and wound up taking 4 courses of antibiotics for it before the doctor could do surgery on it, so I sympathize. It can be very painful. I couldn't wear shoes for quite some time and it was winter, so I couldn't go outside because of the snow. The foot doctor took off the entire side of the toenail and "killed" it so it wouldn't grow back. So far, so good. Not fun, but I'm glad it's done.

I was afraid he'd do that today, but this little adventure was pretty painless, honestly, I'd prefer to pass on the needle, that would HURT!

Oh, believe, me, it hurt! But the problem with just cutting it away is that it will grow back. You'll have to figure out a way so you can cut it yourself or get someone else to do it.

My husband cuts out his ingrown toenails all the time. I cut them before they get ingrown. Our ex-daughter-in-law had an ingrown toenail removed and the base of th e nail killed, or so she said. I never saw it.

I had previously gotten them out, but this one, I couldn't see... You know, the foot is outside the reach where I can see it and I'm not limber enough to pull it up where I can see it with the reading glasses!

My SIL has troubles with ingrown toenails quite often. I understand they can be quite painful. When she goes to the Dr, he cuts of part or her toenail. This is why my mother always use to tell us to cut your toenails straight across. She was a RN...so she has probably seen lots of people with sore ttoes. Hope all goes well for you.

I hate ingrown toenails. I have had quite a few. I normally let my feet soak in hot bath water and dig them out then. Doesn't seem to hurt as bad either.

it wasn't too bad when I could see them and get to them, but since I'm over 50, things have gotten a bit more difficult!

I used to get them, when I was a pre teen. Never told my family, I figured they could not afford to take me to the doctor. I would end up jerking it out. Rinsing thhe swollen part with peroxide. That worked for awhile. When I was 21 I had it happen again. Again I pulled it out, then we went to the beach on a really hot day, and it made it all better. I guess I just resist seeing the doctors so much that I will do almost anything to avoid it. When I had the bunion surgery last year the doc said I should have had it done a long time ago, like when I was a teen. I used to stub that toe a lot and I am sure it was a cause of the bunions and the spurs and bone chip.

ouch! I've actually stubbed a few toes hard enough to break them, probably the one time its a good thing I was screaming into my bed, because I probably would've awaken the next door neighbors! Broke that toe on the bed frame!

hi elicbxn oh yes I had one ingrown big toe and it was infected and I bumped it while we were sleeping in the basement of this familey who put us up for the fourth of July roundup. The sac of pus broke opne and the thing quit hurting luckily., My granddad was with me. So I had to wait til the day after the Roundup and got to' my foot doctor who did that he deadened my toe and did the cutting and when I got home and the numbing wore off I was ready for the pain pills. but I was young then and it healed in a couple of days. now It would take more than that.I am 84 and diabetic. I now have thismess on my leg and my referral has not come through so am calling my doctors office in the morning to find out where they sent it as it did not come to me here at Gold Crest. I also need to make a drs appt for my diabetic checkup next month.

OUCH! Mine wasn't that bad, but it was hurting. I hope you get the doc figured out soon! That kind of sounds like my sister breaking a tooth on July 3rd. We thought she'd have to wait until at least the 5th, and maybe even getting back home from our vacation, but when we got to our aunt's place, one of her step children was reminding her that she had a dentist appointment. I guess I was the only one who heard her, my aunt didn't that's for sure. Apparently, this dentist worked in Atlantic City, but lived in this town and saw people a few evenings a week there in Little Egg Harbor. My sister got in that night and got her tooth fixed right up! Last I heard, that tooth is still doing fine!

i HAVE them all the time but try to keep the corners cut out before they get infected. tHAT DOES HURT TO DO THAT BUT IF I DON'T THEN I'M IN TROUBLE. oNE TIME I GOT SUCH A HORRIBLE INFEVTION & THE NAIL came out the end of my toe. I suffered w/that for weeks so try to keep them cut out so i don't have a mess like that gain. Hope yours continues to get better.

Well, it didn't hurt until I stubbed it, but it only hurt for a bit after that. Mind you, if it wasn't already tender, that little stub probably wouldn't have hurt at all.

I just recently had my third and fourth toes done like that! Yep, I've had four ingrown toenails. Because they were getting infected so often, I had to do something permanent, so I had my big toes done a few years ago and the toes right next to my big toes done just recently, after the surgery on my neck. Each side of each toe had to have the nail bed killed. I was tired of the infections, the antibiotics, the pain always coming back so I had to do something permanent and I'm so very glad I did! The nails don't look terrific after this procedure but I don't care. It's funny but the doctor who just did the last two toes seemed very concerned about how I would deal with the nails not looking great after the procedure. I had to tell her, more than once, that I don't care what my nails look like; I'm at the age where comfort is placed WELL above looks. I just don't want pain anymore. I'm VERY glad I had this done. Oh, my oldest son had to have his ingrown toenails surgically fixed when he was in high school for the same reason... they kept getting infected.

I am feeling MUCH better now! He did rather have to pry the thing out of the toe, but within a few hours it felt better - at least until I stubbed it! now I can barely remember how bad it hurt - at least the toe, the rest of the foot... well, not much can be done about them...

I usually go to a nail salon and have them remove my ingrown. Usually if your ingrown was removed for the first time, you would have to maintain it. However, we should make sure that the stuffs that they use for your toe is sterilized. Another is that the person that doing it is an expert and taking every step of the cleaning very careful. I have an uncle who was diabetic and when he had his toe cleaned it was wounded and for some reason it spread all throughout his feet and the doctor have to remove his feet to avoid spreading it throughout his leg.

I guess I'm so wary of people doing things to my nails, I can't tolerate polish on my nails, so I haven't ever gone - at least at the doc, I could watch what he was doing (when I wasn't shutting my eyes! ) and it really didn't hurt Yeah, diabetics have to be so careful, can't feel wounds and don't heal quickly.

I've never had ingrown toe nails but my son did his senior year of highschool. It wouldn't heal even soaking it in salt water. The doctor ended up having to remove part of his toe nail.

I've heard about that "v" thing too, and tried it, by the foot doc I went to see a couple of years ago said that it only works on some people, and my nails aren't made for them... darn it!

I have ingrown toenails, one worse than the other. I have had the sides of my toe nails removed, both at the same time. It was very painful once the anaesthetic wore off and when the toenails grew back, there was no change. Both have a fungal growth under the nail now that I cannot get rid of. I've been dressing the nails for months and months with an anti fungal liquid, the nail is supposed to come off and the fungus is then supposed to die or something. It all looks very gross but nothing is happening. Hope you are pain free soon.

He removed the sides of my toenails right into the toe so there was no toenail on either side of my big toe, just the middle was left. I think the idea was to kill the nail bed on the outer edges...maybe he was experimenting, who knows?

but did they kill the nail bed? this was just cut out, he says if I continue to have trouble then he'll kill the nail bed Haven't had any nail fungal events, but I knew a lady I took one look at her nails and knew she had a bad problem, but she wasn't willing to do the work to take care of them...

Grrr mylot did NOT post the response the first time I have a similar problem, for 2 years now. I was with a bus trip of 3 hours and slept in it with snickers on and one side of my nail was affected since then and it started hurting me. I visited a work doctor this year and he told me i should go to a surgent which i did not as i don't see WHY i should remove the WHOLE nail, when just a part is affected (the right side) and even that one is affected by what is under the skin not the nail - whatever. I visited a foreign general doctor in Greece and told me he has one as well, treated me with some substances and antibiotic and teached me how to do this myself, and advised me not to go unless it gets worse to have it removed. am i to understand that a doctor can just kill part of it and not all in order to fix it ?

Hello ElicBxn. I went and had it fixed on Monday last week and the pain is gone now. They sad it will take 1-2 month for the nail to grow, but I am really happy it's not swallowed any more and that the pain finally is gone.

Well, i experienced the same, where i had infection on my toe because of an ingrown, cut so deep by the pedicurist. I took an antibiotic for 7 days and after 7 days, the pus just simply dried out! From then on, i take care of my toenails myself, not a pedicurist anymore. Yours is a much more serious one. But am glad it didn't hurt that much when it was "operated " on.

YIKES! Guess its a good thing I don't let anyone do my nails! Once the swelling went down, the doc could extract the nail, but I can't do them myself, something about them being too far for me reach if I can see them without my reading glasses, and not able to get them close enough to see with my glasses!
