My 21 year old son and I both could stand to drop a few pounds. I want to lose a total of 40 and so does he. However we want to see who can lose the most weight between now and March when he comes home from college for spring break. I love salads and water. I am off soda and no chips or gummy bears ( i love gummy bears). Now he on the other hand hates salads and he thinks water is some kind of punishment. But he has access to the gym and school and I don't currently belong to one... Who do you think has a better chance of losing more weight, Me who is eating right but not in the gym or my son who i doubt is eating right but will go to the gym???/

34momma in a contest between a man and a woman your male ultra fast metabolism he will unfortunately win. unfair as women usually always change their diets to healthier fare but our darned metabolic rate is usually slower than a guy specially a younger guy. I say its patently unfair but it almost always true that the guy will lose more. I have seen it with my husband when he was still alive and with my womren friends whose husbands always lost weight first and the ,most as they have bigger metabolisms.

I would say he does but only because exercising increases metabolism and will be able to loose weight better. However, will he be discipline enough to go to the gym routinely. That being the case then you do, but by how much as exercising needs to be implemented to drop consistent amount of healthy weight. Try walking a little bit after lunch ant that will have you far ahead of the game. Best of Luck and may the two of you be healthy.

If he isn't eating right though eventually his metabolism will stall because most of us cannot simply (in one day) do the amount of exercise needed to burn off what we eat. It's basic math lol.

I think that women can loose more weight than men because you guys have water weight, it will go up and down each month. He does have access to a gym but that's only for building muscle which you can only do after you loose weight. If you stick with your plan I think you will loose the most.

That's a really good question. He's younger than you and we all know that the older we get, the harder it is for us to drop the pounds. But, depending on whether or not you'll be doing any exercising, like walking more or running, you might lose weight faster. I say this because, if he is exercising more, although that will increase his metabolism, he will be building more muscle which weighs more than fat. So, even though he may be healthier, he may still weigh the same as before. I know this to be true because my son did the same thing. He was overweight and got a job that was extremely physically demanding. He toned up great but he didn't lose any weight, it just turned into muscle. So, you may just lose weight faster than your sun, as long as you do some kind of extra exercising, even just walking. Eating right plays a HUGE role in losing weight. Good luck to you both and keep us updated about your progress!

Hi 34momma, it is hard to judge without knowing about the lifestyle of both of you. First of all, if you are a stay at home mom, you are likely to lose to your son. The temptation of taking a tea break is great since you are always at home, and have access to cookies, tea, coffee, and other snacks. The other factor is the proximity to the grocery store. If you take 20 minutes walk to the store, and buy detergents, then talk 20 minutes walk home, that is even better than going to the gym. Another factor is the size of your house and garden. I do not know if gardening is your hobby. If it is, you will have a chance to lose weight through gardening and housework.

I think your son will win this game because exercise is really a great way to lose weight. Our body is a kind of system, our weight is controlled by the input and output. Although you have a better eating habit while your son has not. let's say that you have a little less input than your son. But your son's output is much greater than your's because he goes to gym regularity and you don't exercise much. So, the balance of your son is less than you. Just like you is "-1" and your son is "-2". So, he will lose weight faster than you.

I think you have more chances of winning. Why because I have seen hefty people go to gym and get toned but not lose much weight. I feel that going to gym is actually not to lose weight but tone the body. If one really wants to lose weight, t hen I think strenuous physical activity would be the way to go. It burns the fat instead of shaping it. :D. I might be wrong too I don't know, but my best guess is that you should spend some time running or jogging. That will surely help. But please do so under the supervision of a person who knows all this stuff cos anything outward might happen. bourne

I agree with the ones who say your son, and I also agree that his faster metabolism will play an important role as well as the regular exercise. In your case the water will help a lot but you also want to be sure you are getting enough calories or your risk slowing your metabolism down even more. I am sure you also know to watch the salad dressing and fixings or you may take in too many fat calories. Good luck to both of you in your quest to better your health!!!

Momma- My husband and I started Atkins back on the 12th and I've lost 7 and he's lost 11, so that will tell you how close you'll be cutting it. I think men tend to lose quicker because they have more muscle. If you want to increase your chances make sure you're on a diet that is off sugars, processed foods, and eat only healthy carbs. Don't deprive yourself though because you'll go into starvation mode and end up putting on more weight! Now, in terms of exercise you need to do both weights and cardio. You could jog, walk, run all day long and continue to burn but if you want to add burn to your loss you will need to begin putting on muscle. I'm not saying you need to body build but all of us women could stand to add more muscle to our upper frame where we are naturally weaker then men. So start doing more weight, less reps and you'll start building muscle. (Later you can do less weight, more reps and tone the skin and muscles). The more muscle you put on the more fat you'll burn. Hope that helps! I wish you luck. Namaste-Anora

I'n not sure, you both have advantages althought the younger you are the faster your metabolism is. No sure way to say but, i give you props for this. Not many parents would do this, so I'm really happy for you. You know, how cool that would be if all parents wanted to work out a bit more and encouraged their sons/daughters? Either way I'm sure you'll both be happy with the results! Health is a very valuable thing.
