Literacy Crusade

Have you heard of this? It was a campaign set in Nicaragua launched in the 80's. It was a project where the small percentage of literate people, mainly 12 years old called brigadistas, mainly from the urban areas went out and volunteered to teach reading and writing to those who could not yet. Many went out to the rural areas to teach the campesinos (peasant farmers) and over 400,000 people accomplished literacy in about 5 months. It pretty much became a cultural exchange and many reported that this was the most inspiring experience they've ever did. If there was a campaign like this in your area, would you participate?
