My dad saw the doll that Santa gave my 3 year old daughter for christmas...it was a doll that I had knitted...my dad thinks that home made toys like that are better than the ones bought in the store...i am thinking about making (knitting & crocheting) some toys to sell online...do you agree that toys like this are better than the ones bought in the store?

Yeah I do agree. Although these hand made gifts can be time consuming to make, they generally are made to last, unlike many toys that are store bought these days. They are also made with love, which I feel goes into the toy and can be picked up subconsciously by a child. They are aware that extra care and effort went into it I think even though they do not realise it.

To tell you the truth Bill, i had never thought of it that way...maybve this is one of the reasons why my daughter likes to sleep with the doll I made her every so often...

Yeah, I remember you mentioning it before...There is an old pensioner in Mackay that makes different kids toys to sell to help supplement his pension...we bought a REAL rocking horse from him for our daughter & it's made that well that she can give it to her kids...he makes things like rocking horses, tables & chairs, bbq's, stoves, etc. They are expensive but made to last & can be slow to sell too.

I got into making wooden dolls houses a few years back for this reason. Everyone loved them, especially the kids, but they were too time consuming to make so I stopped. I also lost my workshop as it turned into the office for our business!

To a point, yes I agree with your Dad. I remember last christmas shopping literally every store I could find for a baby doll that DID NOTHING!! I wanted a little doll for my grand daughter that didn't eat, pee, cry, whine, wiggle, spit, wet, walk...all but breathe on its own. I wanted her to have that wonderful experince and use her imagination as i did as a child, and make the baby doll do all those things! Now, all they do is push a button and the doll does everything. Where's the fun in that? Same with things like board games. How much fun it is to roll the dice, count out money, move your marker around the board, add things, get "paid", buy things, add things up, collect things, "miss a turn", try to win! Now, kids just sit, often alone and with an electric box thing in their hands, they sit there and let their thumbs go into over drive flipping and pushing. I just don't see the fun. And of course, no brain or imagination usage! I wouldn't say it is best "homemade" but I would say it is best...to bring the past into the present. Kids are missing out on so much these days. Do any know how to write a letter to a grand parent in another town? Have they had that fun of going to the mail box and finding a letter with their name on it and the excitment of opening it and reading it? No, they sit in front of the PC and type a few sentence email and then there is goes. Where's the fun in that? Does your daughter love the doll you made? If so...then end of story. It was the right gift to give.

Then that is all that matters. And make sure she keeps the doll...even when she out grows it. Later in life, she is going to have a wonderful memory thanks to you!

I agree that there aren't too many toys out there that let kids use their imaginations...actually, I agree with all of what you have said lol. My daughter loves the doll I knitted for her & I am happy with that.

Absolutely! Homemade toys, blankets, booties or anything of the like are totally awesome and way better than mass manufactured store bought items. And, that's why they sell for so much. By the way, I didn't know you knitted. That's cool. I'm a crocheter and love doing crochet. I crocheted my daughter's baby blankets and baby sweaters. When she was born, I put a little hand crocheted royal blue baby sweater on her over top of the baby onesie so she wouldn't get cold in the nursery. The doctors and nurses raved! It was such a hit. I think you would do really well selling your knitted or crochet handiwork online whether dolls or clothing or whatever. I have a good feeling about it. Please post pics of your projects as you can. And, best of luck.

Wow!! I never knew you crocheted!! i do both - knitting & crocheting but I find crocheting better as it's faster for me lol. I will have to take a pic of the doll I made for my daughter...some of my stuff is online though....i will have to remember the name of the site so i can tell you lol.

I agree with your dad.I knit and crochet. And as a result my granddaughters get all sorts of stuff I make. They don't mind.Last summer I don't recall how much amigurumi I made.I have some of them posted on Lionbrand. But they are 6 and 9 and they enjoy all of things I make. They get hats, scarves, gloves, blankets, pillows, toys, etc. My sister has been trying to get me to make stuff and let her sell it.But I enjoy making mine and giving to others.Every baby shower I go to,they get a hand knitted or crocheted baby blanket. The ones you make you actually know how safe they are.So you are more inclined to do more of the things they would like. I have a picture of a couple of pillows I did for them at christmas on my site. http://nannyscrafts.blogspot.com The 9 yr old is into Clemson and the 6 yr old is into gamecocks. The colors mostly. They came out pretty good. But I do think you could sell them online,me though,I wouldn't know what to charge.

I had a look at your blog & i love the pillows you have made for your granddaughters - they are great! I can be a little slow at times with making things but that is because I am normally busy with my online activities (trying to make an extra few bucks lol)...I am just starting to crochet a clown so hopefully that won't take too long...I am glad that I have had such a positive feedback with making toys, etc..if you or anyone wants to see what I have made so far...you can see the items at http://www.shophandmade.com/moonchild1au - it's NOT a referral site...just where it's easier for everyone to see photos of my creations. With what to charge, I have learned a secret & basically I have been told that you work out how much it has cost to make the item (in materials) & then double the price.

i do agree with your dad i also think that homemade toys are better than store bought toys back in the old days children had to make their own toys for they did not have the money to spend on buying toys and there were not that many toys avaliable for sale in stores i think they are great because you can personalize them to your own liking but i just do not think that knitted and crocheted toys would sell online very well

This is very true...you can do all of those things to homemade toys...I still haven't tried to sell any online as I am not buying any more wool until I have used what I already have lol (I have way too much!). Hopefully they will sell online but I am inclined to agree with you about the selling...

hello, I think your dad is right because it is more safe than the toys come from other country which has a poison ingredients. And honestly it is much appreciated than the other toys which is expensive and easily got broken but unlike in the toys done in knitting & crocheting. so, good luck hope you made a good decision soon.
