Is it wrong to steal food if you are starving?

I had posted earlier this week about my problem with one of my students, so I'm now searching for articles and videos about people around the world who are starving and just thought of the question above... What do you think? is it okay or not? and why would you say so?

is your student stolen? for me, stealing is always a bad thing to be done by someone even if you have a good motivation on doing this and it is because of being starve..hmp.. so, just put it into your mind that you must have to teach your student about this, better to ask for food than stealing.. :)

not my student, actually, my problem with him is that he threw his food in the trash can even though their was a container for food they can't or won't eat anymore, so I was searching for pictures and articles about starvation in the net and came across the issue above...

oh i see!! how sad to know that since we are all in need of food even if we knew that we can acquire all our needs especially when it comes to our foods.. in that case, they must have to learn he importance of food.. :)

It is always wrong to steal, even food. But yes, because of poverty and hunger lots of people steal just to eat..they don't really ask for food since there are only a few people left who are wiling to give something to them. But it's a good thing that there are still kind-hearted people who do so- give food to the hungry.

Yes, that is why I don't really give donations when it involves government... I usually give my donations to the church and pray that it reaches the people who really need it.

yeah, but sometimes it's hard when you try to give a donation but that donation is pocketed by corrupt officials...sigh, and there is no way I can reach out to people in Mindanao or Luzon (I live in Philippines) without giving to my doubts that the government officials would just take for themselves my hard-earned money...so I just participate in local feedings and volunteer or donate...

I think that there is always a way to work for food or something. I don't think it is right, no. But, I will say this--that if my children were starving I would do whatever it took to get them food. When it comes to a mother's children I think a mother will cheat, steal or do anything she has to to get her child what it needs. But it has to get pretty bad.

very true, but sometimes it does get pretty bad for some people, so we can't judge their actions if they are stealing food because they are starving, how much more if they are stealing food not for themselves but for their children?

As a mother, grandmother and great grandmother I would do anything I had to do to be assured my children ate.

To answer your question..Definitely, stealing is wrong. Why should I say so? Apparently, we were taught that is wrong or bad to take something not ours. Maybe we could say it's wrong for not everybody experience hunger. We never know how it feels to be in hunger, and probably these people that leads to stealing has been a victim of extreme hunger and doesn't know anymore what is good and bad. What they want to have is something to get rid of that feeling of hunger. There are ways of course not to lead to such situations but we can never tell, but there are really some places that experiencing severe scarcity and poverty that leads to its people to such situations.

I think stealing ones food even if you are starving already is not good. It still possessing ones property from another. But I know we can't just let ourselves starve. There are many ways to get some food. People who can ask for food politely to people around them. I am sure there are kind people along the streets.(If you are referring to a street person) They can also find some sideline jobs like being the utility person in a marketplace and the like. It can become their temporary income to be able for them to buy food.

i think this is a question of an ethical behavior. if you think in an ethical relativism point of view , we cant say stealing food if you are starving is wrong nor right. but on my own opinion it is wrong , the one who stole the food can just ask the person or other for food. im sure even the world is full of heartless people. im sure there still good hearted people out there. if myself , asked by someone who needs food. ill give them.

When it comes to survival and when it comes about your family starving then there is rule anymore as we are talkng about survival and life.People will say it's wrong because we are not in that situation but if we do experience that and us then will not think what is right or wrong as starvation is what in our thoughts which means everything will be out of control just like what's happening in the poor countries.Let's put it this way, here in our country, rich people don't go to jail because they steal and kill people as poor people go to jail when they steal food. It's sound unfair I know but catholic religion will not say that it's a crime to steal food when your experiencing crisis about it.

It's never right to steal except if you're in a basketball game. Even if you're too hungry, stealing something is bad. You can always ask for something instead of stealing.

first I was like , what shall you steal in basketball then I asked my man, and he was like stealing in the game is very important, the I was , yeah, it is always wrong but I guess in my opinion there are just those instances that we can't really judge the person who is staling...

I think that it is always wrong to steal..but given the situation in our country (Philippines) some people are forced to steal for many reasons. Because of hunger, or they were told to by gangs, etc... It's a really sad situation, and most who get caught are put into prison- while the corrupt government officials aren't even in jail since they have lawyers and can bail themselves out..

if you are starving and you are hungry then you can steal food and just some thing to eat for that time and do some job for next time you don,t need to stole any thing to fullfill yours.. not to make it as you profession.

When one is starving, he seemed to be not thinking straight anymore. All that is in his mind is probably to feed his hunger, so stealing happens. But stealing is frowned at by the society. However, if one is so hungry and he sees food on somebody's table, a plea to have some part of it for himself will i guess not fall on a deaf ear. I guess, the one who owns it will have the heart to share some to him if not the whole of it. No one can deny not to pity someone who begs for food. One can still even deny a beggar begging for money, but not one begging for something to eat, because he is so hungry. Have a nice day !

hi, yes, definitely wrong to steal food when you are starving, but most of the street children steal food when they are starving, but when i feel starving i just buy food and never steal it.

First of all, hunger cant see any thing that what is right and what is wrong if anyone want to survive in this world, he has to eat food, but besides stealing there are also some ways to get food like borrowing from someone or do some work either it is small, but if no chance of any thing then finally one can steal for survive himself, so it is not wrong when his all efforts to get food are going useless.

true, though I think the action of stealing is still wrong but in those cases we can't judge the people who does it...

I can't just say yes or no to this question. If you go into a store and steal, its just not right. But then if your starving, you might not have much choice. A better way would be to speak to the manager and explain that you are hungry, do they have an odd job or two or you to earn some food. If you do that chances are they just might give you some food. I never want to see someone hungry. If someone gets caught stealing and they are stealing food to feed themselves or their family. They shouldn't be prosecuted, they should be given some help. Stealing is wrong, I do not steal. But if I was starving and had no other way of getting food, I might do that.

Personally I would say it is Wrong, and they need to find more ways and venues to feed the people who are starving. Even here in the US they always assume if you have a roof over your head, and Married, no kids with both working that you have $$ for everything and everything is OK and you should easily be able to afford food, etc. I think personally they need more Food Banks and places for people to go when they are hungry, and for more people to be willing to reach out and help others. If I knew of someone who was stealing food because they were starving, personally I would help try and think of ways to help them. Yes, stealing is wrong. But when everyone always is turning their backs on the homeless and hungry it makes you wonder where any compassion is as well.

It is wrong to steal food, but it is right to offer to work or do something for someone in return for a meal. That seems like a good idea. Then again if something falls one's way, like an apple falling on one's head, of one is in the supermarket and there are food that is spilled in the bulk barn, then it is all right to take it. I doubt that anyone would kick someone who is starving if they offer to clean the walk or wash the windows for some food.

If you are starving, you should not have to steal food. there are many charities in various communities that help those in need. Check these places out before considering stealing to get something to eat. It will be worth it in the end.

I would have to say the answer to this is obviously debatable. If you were stealing food from an obese or rich person. As long as you did not scare or inconvenience them; I personally think that is okay! Stealing food from the poor or someone that needed it too would be wrong, as would going into someones house to steal food or scaring them.
