When illness becomes more than you expect.

My daughter had been complaining for a couple weeks or more that she had earaches and that she had hard calcium stones coming out of her tonsils (she called them tonsiloliths). She also said she could smell a putrid smell on occasion that was like "death". She assumed that she had an ear infection that was getting worse. When her face began to hurt, she finally made a doctor's appointment for last Friday. You need to understand - neither of us has insurance. Even though she works full time and was supposed to qualify for insurance after 90 days, her boss refused to add her to the policy, so she takes care of as much of her problems as she can at home before going to a doctor. It's not like she can easily just quit and find another job right now. Well, there is a local pharmacy who offers antibiotics and diabetes meds for free with a prescription, so she decided now was the time to go to the doctor. It turns out that she had a huge sinus infection that had not only invaded her ears and throat, but also her jaw. The right side of her face was red and puffy. The doctor agreed to call the prescription into the pharmacy offering free antibiotics. She'll pick them up today after work. Just knowing that relief was on its way made a huge difference over the weekend. She felt and looked like someone who had seen better days. But, her mood was much brighter after her doctor's visit - like a weight had been lifted from her. It is a shame she has such a miserable boss (she has three bosses, two of whom think she should be on the insurance, but the third, who is married to one of the other two, flat out refuses to consider it, saying she doesn't deserve it. It's an odd situation, for sure.) But, it's fortunate that there is a local pharmacy that offers free and low cost prescription service without insurance. Are you fortunate enough to live in an area where prescriptions are affordable and don't require insurance? Are there any where you are that actually offer free meds?

There are organizations you can apply to that will pay for your medicine. They require you to list your doctor, your medications, and your income, but they help. I don't know how to get to that site for your state, but I know they help most of the 50 states. I don't remember the name of the company because it was five years ago I applied. But then I got on disability, and I no longer qualified.

I have no insurance, and have not seen a doctor since I finished the foot surgery post op stuff. If I were to see the doctor and needed meds, he might have them on hand and give them to me. I can get many prescriptions for four dollars or less. It would not matter, though, I would go if I had that much pain. Dental infections and sinus infections can perforate the bones, so that is scary.

You and your daughter are very lucky to have such services around. I wish we did but as far as I know, we don't. I don't need it but my parents sure do. My mom's eye drops cost over a hundred dollars. VERY expensive. As for her boss being an azz, isn't there someone higher up she could go to? Isn't there some sort of law where her boss HAS to give her the insurance if she wants it? There has to be something out there that's on her side. I hope that jerk boss of hers sees his day and soon! How low can one go?!

Nope, no one she can go to. Deb is pretty much HR. She does interviews, training and payroll. Her bosses are the OWNERS. There's no one higher. Do you have a ShopRite near you? (Not sure where you live, but I'm thinking for some reason New York). If you do, they're the ones with free antibiotics and diabetic meds. She ended up having to pay for her antibiotics, though. The first prescription was for something she was allergic to (even though they had the info), so when the doctor called in another script, it was one that wasn't on the freebie list. But, she's much better now than she was.

I checked the internet for a ShopRite store and there isn't any in my or my parents state. I'm in NC and my parents are just over the border in VA and the closest one is in MD. Oh well, it was worth a try anyways! Thanks!! And I'm glad your daughter is much better!!

Hi jerz~ I hope that your daughter will feel better after she gets the antibiotics that she needs. Don't even get me started on my insurance plan! Since I live in NYS and am on SSD I have what is called a "Medicaid Spenddown" where the State gives me my Disability money and then expects me to give them back $447 a month for Medicaid Insurance! The give me $1234 a month, which is only enough to pay my rent as it is and expect me to pay them $447 a month for lesser care medical care than someone who has never worked in their life! This month I can't possibly pay that amount because I need to catch up on other bills! God help me if I get sick and need to go to the hospital because I won't be covered! NYS is the most cheapest, moronic State when it comes to Medical Insurance! I have been fighting with them since I got my Disability Insurance now 2 years ago and they just keep telling me that there is nothing that they can do. But, if I never worked I would have better insurance and still have the same amount of money! WTF!!!!!!!!

I have the fortunate luck of living in Canada where we do not have to pay for every doctors visit. I have tried to avoid the doctors for awhile now. There have been a few little signs that have told me to see her but I have tried not to. I have seen her for many other things but not this. You see I have not seen her because I think that I have neurological disorder and I guess I have been scared to see her. But I finally figured that I should cause if it can be helped better get it done sooner than later. So it does not turn into something worse.

Oh, you are American. I thought for a moment you were describing a third world country! I couldn't think of any country in Africa or Asia that would have this kind of situation. My mistake.

That just about sums up the way that us Europeans see the US, doesn't it, Petersum! A 'first world' country that has some inexplicable 'hick' values when it comes to the basic health of their population!

well, I do have insurance thru my retirement from the State. Good thing, because chances are that I'll be back at the docs because of this cold Maggie gave me. I hope it doesn't reach that point this week, because we actually have a chance of SNOW on Thursday!
