Discussions in myLot - I wish...

Let me see... I've been in myLot for... 6 days now. Oooh! Almost a week! =D Needless to say, I am very new here. In these first 6 days, however, I quickly realized something. It seems to me, discussions in myLot are not meant to be what I first thought them to be. I was very excited at first and I thought, all I needed to do was look around me or pick something that happened to me during the day, share it, and turn it into a discussion! Neat! =) But thinking about it now, my idea might be more suited for a blog instead of here. (In fact, I'm a bit afraid to post this one for fear that it will be deemed unacceptable... =( ) I came to this realization while looking for topics I can reply to. I looked into different threads and saw some discussions/responses/comments which pointed to items in the discussion guidelines. Now, I did read the guidelines before. But at first, the only ones that stood out for me was the 'don't post jokes, recipes, etc as discussions'. This was the one item I said I should keep in mind because I might make the mistake of doing just that. =P As for the rest, they didn't stand out for me much, either because for me they were self-explanatory, or things I don't expect I'll have an issue with, or (admittedly) just some things I took for granted. Reading through the discussion guidelines again, I realized the following: (1) Topics are not meant to be repeated here. It seems it is better to have one long discussion about a particular topic, rather than many small discussions about the same topic. (For this, I have learned to use 'search', but I still cringe when I read responses saying 'I have seen similar topics such as this before'. *cringe*) I see that this has its advantages, but then another thing is... (2) One is expected to read all responses before posting one's own response. I see that this may be for the best, but sometimes there are topics that call for individual, personal responses, and maybe for those it is not imperative that one reads everything first before replying. Nevertheless, I want to follow the guidelines/rules as much as possible (besides not wanting to be called 'lazy' or anything like that... =/ ), so I've decided to limit myself for now to responding only to smaller discussions - the ones that don't have too many responses yet, so I can honestly say I have read them all. I read and respond slowly in general, so it will just take too long for me to tackle bigger discussions. (And I don't really have that much time to spend here.) The downside to this is: I have seen topics which I want to take part in, but are too long for me to handle at this time. So I thought I'd just remember them and go back to them later, read through them little by little, until such time I'm able to post a response. And then I discovered something else... Unless I have responded to a discussion, sometimes it's not that easy to find it again. I tried looking for one particular discussion using keywords in search, and at first I wasn't able to find it. Good thing I eventually remembered the title of the discussion, and when I used the complete title as my search term, that was the time I found the discussion again. I then sent a friend request to the person who started it, so that at least I'm assured I can find it again by going to her profile, in case I forget the title. So now I come to my wish. (Yes, in case I made you forget because of the sheer length of my introduction, =P in my subject I said 'I wish...'.) I wish there was some way here in myLot to bookmark particular discussions I'd like to follow. It will really help me a lot to have a place where I can keep links to the discussions I'd like to read through first before I reply to. I'm sure I can use my browser's bookmark function for this, and making a list somewhere (in a notepad file or even just writing them down on paper) can help too. But it would just be really nice if it can all be done within myLot. Next comes my question. (This is, after all, a discussion. =P Though I expect this will be my last discussion in a while. I think I will resign myself to just responding for now... if I can... anyway...) My question is: is there anything you think myLot is lacking in, and that you wish it has? Maybe some improvement or added functionality that you can think of? Thank you for reading and thank you in advance for your replies! I do hope this post is acceptable... =)

Welcome to myLot! I read it all, I really did, right to the very last word. Youknow why? Because I was so thrilled to see that a new user really has been all through the Guidelines and done their best to understand them! The moe I read your topic the more I realised that you have ot only read them but have seen that they serve a purpose too. I understand what you are saying about the similar topics. Many people respond on them and say that line. I have seen it too. I never understand why they don't go backl and join the original topic, although that would mean that they have to read pages and pages of responses too so maybe that puts them off. Now to your first question: wny not make a folder (or several) in your browser and bookmark the discussions that for one reason or another you are interested in? I have done that and have three different ones at the moment. I just pop them in there and get back to them when I need them. I have nothing to suggest that might be lacking. I have done that elsewhere and the list might be too long

mysdianait, Thank you so much! You've been very welcoming and encouraging. I very much appreciate it. =D Yes, I think I'll do that - bookmark in my browser. I just thought it would really be nice to have another tab right next to started, responded, friends started, hot, ... called 'discussions I follow' or something like that. =P

I find nothing wrong with this post, but what do I know? I would like to say a couple of things. I like your idea bout being able to bookmark discussions so you can find them again. As far as your question: I would like it if they could put the interests alphabetically to make them easier to find. I tried to find a new interest area so that I could ask some questions about things that were of recent interest to me and I had to go through over 100 pages in the "add interest" area after having found the topic in the overall interests on about page 20 or so. I was thinking I should suggest that to the people in charge, but I had forgotten about it until you brought this up. Thanks for bringing up this topic.

Oh, yes, that's true! It can be quite difficult to search for things here. I was looking through a friend's profile a few days back because he mentioned something about discussions he started when he was new here... I think he's been here for over a year and I had to look through pages and pages of activities from his profile. =P Thanks for reading! =)

I think it is more than acceptable, I am glad you posted it. I feel the same way. I have find myself turning away from large discussions, like this one,but something made me sit and read it through, matter of fact, I read it twice. I am glad I did. You made points in the guidelines that I even missed, and I have read them more than several times. Personally, I try to respond to ones that are not only short but the ones that does not have any responses to them. I agree with you , function is something I think needs to be worked on. I too, has to tried search for something I wanted to go back and find, and respond too but couldn't. I really think it is a matter of learning the in's and out's as you go, and postings like yours is great for the new person. I am a new at this also. Honesty, I am really appalled at how some of these people can be so ugly with their words in the short time I have been doing this, but then again it might just be me. I wish you luck in mylotting and what ever new adventures you decide to take on.

Thanks for taking the time to read. =) There's this other discussion about long discussions/responses, and I felt so guilty. =/ Some people were saying they just ignore those. Which made me a bit sad but *shrugs*... It's perfectly alright if people choose to ignore a discussion if they think it is too long for them. It's just personal preferences, really. Anyway, I agree we learn as we go along. I'll get the hang of it in time. =)

Oh! And yes, I almost forgot... I too look through the ones that have few or no responses yet. That way, if I find one that I'd like to respond to, I can do so now instead of much much later. =)

I also read everything! I read somewhere here that it might be a good idea to create folders and bookmark the topics that you might find interesting. I would actually do the same, but I just find that I don't have time for it. I only get here when I get the chance, so when I find something I respond to it right away. Or else, I have a hard time looking for it too. So, for now I think this site is good as it is.
