Do you think Obama and the FCC should have a kill switch for the Internet?

With the recent problems going on in Egypt, a very liberal republican would like the Internet Kill Switch bill reintroduced. The would give the FCC the power to kill the Internet if there was a security threat. Personally, I think this is a very bad idea. It would stop communication between neighbors during a very important time and step all over out Constitutional rights. It's just another way for the government to control you - something our Constitution was made to protect us from. What do you think about this bi-partisan bill? Just like that crazy homeland security bill, this one has a lot of support on both sides of Congress. I think it should be killed, crumpled, and burned. What do you think? And since I'm not allowed to paste it here and I can't use Adfly go search for it on the mylot search to get the facts.

I am scared by the post above mine (1st post) I mean really you think the internet being able to just turn off the Internet when ever they feel like it is a good thing you most not care for your 1st amendment rights much or are you one of those I would rather have Safety than rights because well I have to tell you that you deserve neither safety nor rights. A founding father said that. I have to warn you though that the use of Liberal is not correct in this phrasing just an FYI as a Liberal means liberty which means freedom so a true liberal wouldn't be for this idea at all the word you where looking for was statist (Big Government) Republican not a liberal Republcian. Well just goes to show that the GOP and the Democrats are one and the same that they are both Statist and no longer are Conservative or Liberal as you where putting it but have merged into a massive statist Organization.

"FYI as a Liberal means liberty which means freedom so a true liberal wouldn't be for this idea at all" What you're talking about is what libertarians often call a "classic liberal". Most modern day liberals are really just statists, as are most modern day republican politicians. That's why I don't associate myself with either major party.

Taskr I know, I am a registered Libertarian so yeah I know the fact that most "Liberals" today are really nothing more than statist hounds. Both of these Heavy hitting parties are Statist in every single way they either want the state to know or have the power to know who I F**K or they want to control what I spend my money on.

yeah but liberal these are what many of these democrats say they are. even maxine waters said it herself when she at first called herself a socialist then corrected herself and called herself a liberal. it comes from the donkey's mouth. (mylot wouldn't let me say the other word which actually means mule, but you know) not all republicans are like the ones from maine. some are borderline libertarian. unfortunately, people don't understand libertarians one bit and simply ignore them. the problem is, most people who would vote for a libertarian would probably vote for a republican instead of a democrat. so when you take them away from the republican then you get the democrat. while i don't like mccain or obama, i would have MUCH rather had mccain win. of course in a way we needed an obama to show the country just how screwed up voting for him was, but it is really sad it happened that way. keep putting libertarians in grass roots positions and people will see it work, but as president an independent will not win before a hard core party, it just won't happen. and if hippies want communes they can just go build one. that is what makes the country great. i love hippies, as long as they don't force their eccentric ideas on me. i don't love authoritarians - which is what the hippies of the 60s have become because no one else wants to be a hippy and use their universal health care idea so they want to shove it down our throat. and centrists are just a bunch of sheep. baaaaa. i like being at the top of the political diamond.

I think it's a good idea. I see whre you are coming from. It should not be misused but if there is a chance our data could be compramised then yeah go for it. I am a licenced ham operater so My comunications hopefully will not be disrupted and hopefully cell phones won't eather.

OK I never said it should happen. The data from the US government should be concealed in a way that people can't get in anyway. The rights of the citizens have nothing to do with that. People need to be smarter about their connections and stopped getting their fannies wiped by the government.

*and data from us government means things that run the internal stuff like passwords, nuclear info, etc. NOT private sector things or general information that won't kill the country. People need to be responsible for their own lives for once. Companies as well.

I think a kill switch for the internet held by our government is one of the most awful, debilitating, anti-American things yet. They do not want it to save our data in case of an attack. They want that kill switch because they cant control fully what is happening. In a free society there is no need for this. Sure some measures should be put into place but control should be very very limited.

No, definitely not. That is so against the first amendment.

Under no circumstance should the American government have control over the Internet in any way, much less have authority to completely shut it down at its say so. There's not even a hypothetical "doomsday" scenario one could float that would even begin to justify the U.S. government hitting some kill switch to elimite Internet connectivity for over 300 million people. Our government already has far too much power. It is not set up to create or play the leveler or to play the nanny. Trying to do these things has made our government completely inept. A government is only as good as those running it. Supposedly, the American people were to be in control. Unfortunately, it's now just a career for crooked politicians and a black hole wherein hard-earned money from private industry is outright stolen and never to be seen from again. The more they try to "help," the worst stuff gets. And the most ironic part is that politicians can't see why! They take and switch hands and argue and point fingers and still haven't the slightest idea about big government just doesn't--and never has and never will--work for anyone. People who want our government to do more are free to feel that way. They're also free to move. Republican, Democrat, independent - I don't care. They should not have such power over people. If they're worried that an Internet breach could be a matter of national security, perhaps they should go back to handling national security how they did it BEFORE THE INTERNET. Just a suggestion.

wow!!! talk about stepping all over the founding fathers wishes. The freedom of speech covers the internet pretty well. We are allowed to voice our opinions, popular or not. i know that i use the internet to do that more than any other source. I can gurantee that the country would complete rebel if they shut down the internet.
