Is it true? Is everything gone?

I was having a conversation with my wife's brother-in-law about how the wonderful things we enjoyed in our past have completely disappeared. The negativity in our conversation made me wonder if anything was left. For instance, when we were younger, we used to love to scuba dive and each of us, at separate times (we didn't know each other then) managed to become certified divers. We both took our open water exam at a reef off the coast of Florida called John Penecamp State park. Back then it was absolutely beautiful and was like visiting an underwater paradise. According to him, today the coral is black. Although it had been fiercely protected over the years, they did not foresee that due to construction and the building of new businesses along the keys adjacent to the underwater park, the coral would be smothered by silt and over a period of time would cause damage to the reef even though it is at least a mile off shore. We also talked about many other things which have disappeared over the years, such as the of shrimp off the coast of Florida due to over harvesting, the disappearance of lobster in Biscayne Bay in Miami also due to over harvesting. These are just a few examples of the type of things we talked about. What do you think? Is everything gone? Can you sight some examples? Or maybe you can think of some examples to the contrary.

I'm not sure about sealife but there is something I've been missing that has to do with a beach; Atlantic City, New Jersey, to be exact. I remember going there as a child with my family. I remember staying in a hotel that had a back door that opened up to a balcony, of sorts. These balconies ran the entire length of this very large hotel on every floor, meaning that you and your "neighbors" from all the rooms on that side of the hotel were on one balcony with nothing separating anyone. I LOVED that hotel!!! Yes, I was just a little thing and times were much different then where trusting your neighbors was as natural as breathing. These hotels are no longer there, at least not the one we went to. I don't believe there are any hotels like this anywhere along the coast anymore. I want so badly to vacation at a beach and initially thought of Atlantic City because of my fond memories there. That's when I found out these hotels no longer exist, well, these balconies no longer exist, anyway. Plus, Atlantic City is now full of gambling and some less-than-legal activities. (I did drive through there a few years back and it was so different I wasn't sure I hadn't gotten lost and somehow ended up in Las Vegas! ) I guess I'll have to do some research to see where the best beach is for someone like me now that my childhood memory-makers are all gone. It is sad, isn't it?

Thanks for your response mentalward. That was just the type of thing I was looking for. It is kind of sad isn't it? It just shows you how small a part of time we share as well as the things that we enjoyed so much.

Las Vegas is not even the same town anymore! No lights, no marques, no "daylight at night" cause of the beautiful and wonderful display of lights. Rooms are a fortune, and just just did bring back penny slots, however if you do the math..they are the same as nickel ones...which they have less of than quarters. The buffets are high now...no more "steak and eggs for 99ยข" on the marques. THis past decade they started putting in the massive mega resorts...some of which have gone bankrupt before they were even finished and others that cost so much to build can't afford to stay open cause people can't afford them cause they have glitzed them up so much. NO more walking the strip...cause they have over the street walkways now and it is just to inconvient to walk the street anymore as you have to manover around the over head street walks. Driving the strip at night was amazing. Those lights and marques were absolutely amazing. Now.. you get on beam of light shooting up in the sky. A volcano that erupts a fw times a night, and the rest of the time...near darkness. They even changed the Pirates Fight show, and changed it from the good pirates vs. the bad pirates, to the scantily clad women pirates destroying the men pirates. It is on the streets and not advised for children to watch. Used to be great for the kids! Oh well....LV is in a dump now and it will be 10 years at least before it can recoop....hope they learn from their massive, selfish expensive mistakes!

Wow! That was a great response coffeebreak. I have never been to LV and it sort of gives me an idea of how everything changes in that part of the country. Thank you so much for the insight. Now when I do go I can have an interesting mental picture of "before and after."

So much is gone. When was the last time you got a hand written letter in your mail box from a friend or family member! I loved that! But no more. TV - what junkie trash is on there now! No fun nights with Matt Dillon or Lucy or Dragnet or Gilligan or Father KNows best or My Three Sons or so many of the other fantastic family fun shows they used to have. No more Wonderful World of Disney! The crap that is on TV now is a disgrace. I remember when KNotts Berry Farm was NOT an amusement park and we'd spend our sunday afternoons in the "old west" and had so much fun. What about home entertainment? When was the last time you got out a board game..Monopoly, Scrable, Life, Candyland, Chutes and Ladders etc? Now, all the kids do is sit there holding a device and their thumbs going mile a minute! Just plain and simple going to the park for the day? Now you can't even let your kids play in the front yard without supervision...not cause you don't trust them, but cause you can't trust others. We used to play around out neighborhood all the time...my kids weren't allowed to leave the front yard. We used to be able to go to the playground at the local schools and play, now they are all fenced up. Construction where the vegetation used to be, freeways where there used to be orange groves, homes where there used to be lemon groves. It is sad that so much has been "lost". But I guess the horse and buggy folks said the same thing when cars can to life. I have lived in several decades...and this current one...it isn't very fun anymore and there is so much that I know and was used to that is missing...people these days don't realize what they are missing.

I think a lot of beauty has gone. I am currently reading this book called 500 Things and Places to See Before They Are Gone. It tells about remarkable sites all around the world and how they may not be there very much longer due to various factors. I think it is a good example of your point. Although I have to say we drove through Colorado to Utah this past summer and I thought the mountains were all remarkably beautiful.

Thank you for your response ladym33. There are some things that do last seemingly forever. The mountains are a good example. I never cease to thrill when I see them. Maybe we should focus our attention on those everlasting things. It's better for us psychologically.
