Well, I couldn't believe the news when I heard it today, but 200 of Borders Bookstores are closing due to bankruptcy. My favorite store in Montclair, California is one of the stores that has been hit. I love this store and it makes me so sad to see this place go. I know that the one in Rancho Cucamonga, CA will still be open, but it's a long distance from Montclair.

Pretty sad indeed! We have several here and it would be a shame as it is always filled with customers. Stores closings seem to be a plague today. I will have to check if here we also will be affected as we have two very near me. Thanks for sharing this as I was not aware.

Thank you for that list LaDeBoheme. Many of my friends and I were in shock. We heard of rumors that the stores were in trouble, but we were hoping that they were just that, rumors. To hear, yesterday, that there were going to be 200+ now, closing, I was speechless, and ready to cry. I was hoping that the Borders that I like to go to wouldn't be one of the ones hit, but it was. The one in Chino that is also close to where I live was hit as well.

Me too. I could not believe my eyes when I read about it. And there reason behind that is because of the use of e-book. A bit nonsense as I really believe many wants paper book not yet the digitized. I hope it will not get worst as I am a bookstore lover!

I know how you feel. Because many of my friends are afraid that "Fahrenheit 451" might become a reality.

Borders' failure to catch on earlier to the growing importance of the e-books is part of their current problems,, CTHanum. According to an AP article which link I posted earlier in this discussion, they also failed to react quickly to counteract declining music and DVD sales, and they have hired 4 CEOs with no prior book experience within 5 years. Their major error according to analysts was when Borders contracted out their e-commerce business to Amazon.com in 2001! A big OOPSie there. Why would Amazon have any incentive to promote Borders? Thankfully, none of the Borders in my neck of the woods is closing. Let's hope they pull it out and learn from their mistakes. I have seen too many of my favorite bookstores close over the years (including Crown Books which a few of you may remember.)

Yeah, they really don't make anything off of their music and DVD sales because their music and DVDs are so over priced. I don't buy music and DVDs from Borders. I buy books from them. Yeah, I remember Crown Books, they closed as well. It was sad to see them go, but they did have a lot competition from Borders and Barnes & Noble.

It's sad, but with the changing marketplace it seems inevitable. Borders has been fighting this financial battle for over a year and finally succumbed. They needed to jump on the changing technology and not be as over-extended (easy for me to say after-the-fact). Still, I feel for all the people who will lose their local stores and have to find alternatives. This sad event is also a reminder to people that if you want to keep a favorite business in business, you have to shop there. It may cost you more, but in the end the only way to support your favorite shops, is to patronize them.

It is. Just yesterday, I saw the "Store Closing" and "Going Out of Business" signs, and signs that said "20-40% Off Everything". It was so incredibly painful because this is the bookstore that I have been going to since I was a child. I love this store because they usually have books that Barnes & Noble won't have, or that many other bookstores will not have. If you name a book, they probably have it. I went there yesterday, and I bought as many books as I could. I got some stuff for my mother and for me.

And your purchases may help. (It's also not bad to get a deal.) Still, when we see those signs going up in our community, it's painful. Even with big box stores, our neighbors work there, it hurts. In the end, those store closings cost us. If something better comes along and replaces what is gone, the cost is minimal, but that's not always the case. The rise of Barnes and Noble and Borders saw a decline in the independent bookstore. That decline is starting to turn around a little, but there will be a void left by the closing Borders around the country. Let's hope someone comes up with the brilliant idea to fill it.

Well, so far I only know which ones will close in the States, but I am not sure about other countries around the world. My advice would be to check the website if you can.

I hope so that it won't close too. Although the price is more expensive than most other bookstores, at least they have a nice collection. Otherwise it is left to Kino. Sad day, sad day for book lovers.

That really makes me want to cry! I hate it when bookstores close! I would shop at Borders, but the nearest one only operates seasonally and the next nearest one is a really long drive. I usually shop at the Barns and Noble, which is only five minutes away. Now I want to get up and go shop at Borders... I don't want that bookstore chain to go under!

So do I because, how I see it is that we need books whether people know it or not. Barnes & Noble is doing pretty well right now, but they don't really carry some of the books that Borders carries. They carry a fair amount and they carry some pretty good books, but Borders just seems to have a wider range of books.

The one in my area is open all year round, and open from 10AM to 10PM. They actually do have more of a selection than Barnes & Noble does.

I've never compared the books they carry. The Borders that I was going to most often was only open October through January, and they seemed to be carrying the same books as the local Barnes and Noble. Maybe I'll hike out and look at what Borders has before the stores close.

Oh yeah, that's very true. I am going to go there today, and buy a few because I have a coupon, and everything there is 20 to 40% off.

It's the sign of the times. I'm sure what we're doing righ here is part of it, the internet. Add to that video games and kimble and people are just not buying books like they used to. Plus, even if you don't wan to buy a kimble, you can go ono amazon and not have to leave the house! You can even find used copies for less than a new copy. If itt's not on Amazon, you can find it on e-bay. I agree it is sad. I live in Michigan and it's happening around here too.

Yeah, e-readers and the internet do take part in this because a lot of people are buying them since they are so convenient. Also, if you are traveling, it is easier to carry an e-reader than several books in your traveling cases.

Oh really... I hope the one that I usually go won't close. I like to go to Border once in a while to look at the knitting books. It would be a pity to lose it...

Someone posted a list of all the stores that are closing, so you might want to check that list. The two in my area Montclair and Chino are both closing, and the one next to the Long Beach Convention Center (the Borders that my boyfriend and I went to every single time we went to the convention) is closing. There are two further out from where I live, but it would be a major hassle to drive to them. One is at the Santa Anita Mall, and the other is at the Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The one in Montclair and the one in Chino were the two most convenient ones to go to because of how close they were to my house, but now I have to travel out. When I heard the news from one of the employees who worked at the Montclair one, she told me that she was hoping that their store wouldn't close, but in the back of her mind, she knew that it was a possibility.

I had heard about this. I have quite a few good memories of staying in Borders for a couple of hours after school, waiting for my Mom to get out of work and pick me up. I'd get something from the cafe and find a comfortable place to read. I've always liked Borders more then Barns&Noble for some reason, not sure why. However I think that of the two Barns&Noble has always been busier. It's still sad to hear what's happening. Personally I haven't been in a while. I'm lucky enough to live in a city with numerous Half-price bookstores and I spend most of my time there looking for good finds.

Yeah, I go to Borders to buy books for school because they are usually the only book store that carries the books that most places don't carry. Well, the place where I was born has a lot of bookstores that sell books for half price, but where I live right now, the two stores that are nearest to where I live, are closing.

It was sad to see that some borders stores are closing. I was always a frequent customer to borders. A co-worker and I spent a lot of afternoons just browsing through the store. We are both avid readers and purchased quite a few books from Borders. The stores that close will surely be missed!

Yeah, I spend a lot of time there as well, and yesterday, I received and e-mail saying that the Montclair Border's is closing, everything is now 20-40% off. I guess I am still in shock over this.

Is it so? Here in my city many were closed because they were running on bank loan, did not pay the instalments, the money was spend in drinks and gambling lol.. Thanks for sharing Cheers. God bless you, have a nice day ahead. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. .

The e-reader craze is partly to blame for this, but it's also the fact that most people don't buy books anymore. Which is sad because people should buy books and should take some time out of their busy lives to just read once in a while.
