I am not a pet lover and I do not know anything about taking care of pets but I read just now about something and I want to share this with you. A lady had shared her sad experience where she had narrated her story. Apparently she had a dog at home and this was thirteen years old. The dog was of great solace and comfort in her lonely life and when she became ill, she took her to a vet. He advised surgery because there were some fibroids in her uterus . The lady hesitated considering the age of the dog. But the doctor assured her that the dog was in peak health and it was no cause for concern. However, after the surgery, the dog was bleeding constantly and the doctor said that it was because of the sutures. After 22 days of suffering, vomiting blood and starvation the dog died. She felt that it could have done without that unnecessary surgery and subsequent suffering and died a natural death. The lady had shared her experience with all readers in a regional magazine and I thought this information may be of help to some people here.

WTF? This vet and the owner were at fault here! The vet should of never done surgery on a 13 year old dog! It sounds like he just wanted to make money off the owner! With the owner, she should of gottan her beloved dog fixed years ago! That dog would probaly lived a a few years yet if this had not happened! Maybe more pet owners will learn from this story and get their pets fixed when they are young! I am happy to say the Husky puppy my older brother got over the last summer had Yukon(the puppy) neutured not long after they got him! More people need to do that like my brother did!!

True. Some vets /doctors are so money minded that we really get led. In this instance , we do not knwo whether people were unaware. But lack of awarenss cannot be justified when you consider the outcome. Finally it was pain all over.

In India particularly, very little is known about caring for animals and that includes Vets too. More than the surgery the after care is where all the attention is needed and this is sadly lacking both at the hands of the doctors and owners. In a way it is good that the animal is no more as one would never know what could have been its fate even if she was not to go in for surgery.

It is true because the animal was thirteen years old.But the dog had been with this lady for such a long time that I could sense her acute distress in seeing it suffer and then pass away.

Very true. Anything needs special care and devotion. A plant needs nurturing and a pet definitley needs care. I wonder why this neighbour of yours has one if she cannot give it a sensitive treatment. THis lady had written about her experience , in a magazine and I could see how miserble she was.She was regretting the surgery because the animal had suffered on account of it.But, as someone had said we have to place our faith in doctors. There is no choice and however much a person can pacify oneself that it was ordained this way I can understand her regret .Poor thing.

I am a pet lover too and we have had several of them. I too have gone through the trauma of losing our pets but kala what one should be concerned about is giving the pet good treatment while it is alive which I have noticed is sadly lacking in Indian homes. Just this morning I saw my neighbour dragging a tiny puppy hardly a few days old which has already been leashed. She has no intention of even touching it leave alone petting or caring for it. Her need is for a watch dog. Full Stop. Why are most Indians unkind to animals I have always wondered. Atleast this lady that you are referring to must have given her pet the best deal and what has happened was not her doing. She should live on memories.

This is really a sad story. I am a dog lover and do understand how heartbroken that lady must have been to see the departure of her beloved dog. Surgery can go either way and unfortunately in this case the dog did not managed to pull through as her condition deteriorated which expedite her departure. Like all other things, there is no permanency in this world. She should be happy to see her dog rest in peace and no longer battling any pain.

It is true Zandi. THe lady had written that if only the dog had been left alone it would have at least eaten what it desired and then passed away naturally. She had spoken of it in such loving tomes thta I felt sorry for her.

I figure out that she has deep regrets and felt that she should have just allow the dog to live her last days enjoying the food she prepared and not have to suffer so much.

My youngest son loves to play with our dogs, and i knew how my kids are so attached with the their pets. I understand how the lady owner grieved for her dog, imagine the 13 years of togetherness.that's really something. Thanks for sharing this story dear. Have a wonderful weekend

Hello Kalav, The intentions of the veterinarian must have been good, but the result of the surgery was bad. I'm afraid too many vets are only after money these days and this is sad. The vet who performes the surgery must have been a bad one, as he assured the lady that the surgery had no risk. Every surgery with an old dog has a high rate of risk, everybody knows this. I'm sorry for that lady, she must have suffered so much for her dog! Too bad she was so unlucky to meet such a poor vet.

It is true inu1711 that the intentions of the doctor are normally good. But as you have pointed out, if she had known about the slightest element of risk involved the lady might not have opted for the surgery after all.

If the dog had what it sounds like you are describing here (pirometria (SP?))it would have killed that dog eventually over a long period of time. it also sounds like this women should have gotten a second opinion from another vet as after 7 days all bleeding should have stopped completely. this does not sound like it was the spay that killed the dog but rather the incompetence of the vet. I have seen many surgeries done on dogs much older with little to no complications and if there are any problems after surgery most vets will do x-rays, etc for free to figure out what went wrong then fix the problem. a dog should not be left to suffer for 22days not to mention starve this animal should of been on Iv and care of the vet whom if this was my dog would have a lawsuit filed against them

YOu seem to be quite knowledgeable on the subject. In our country we are depended nt on the doctors and we just have to pray to God to take care of us.Lawsuits are not too common here as yet.TImes are changing however.

I could not imagine just relying on the vets. every time my animals go in for anything even a simple teeth cleaning i research it for days before and find out everything there is to know and usually bring a list of questions with me to the vets. We are lucky here though that there are lawsuits every day of animals related things and it is nice to know that if something were to happen that never should of happened like in the case with this dog that the law will be on our side. If that were to happen here and the owner was taking the doc to the vet and the dog was still suffering under vet care the vet would be criminally charged and if found guilty most likely lose there licence to practice medicine as well as see jail time and a very large fine. It is even becoming more common for people to win money in lawsuits for emotional pain they underwent having lost their animal.

I am not much of a pet lover. But have heard from a lot of people that it is not advisable to do a dysterectomy for a dog. But now doctors have become more money minded and we are helpless in their hands.

Not that my posting is going to be any different than the others, but this is so sad. I sat here reading as tears hit my keyboard. All I could see was my 13 baby in the same position and I could feel what that women had to go through. My dog is the baby my husband and I could not have of our own, so it would kill me. I have had dogs ran off, and that is bad enough, but to have to watch your dog suffer, no..thats just too much. I would much rather my baby die of natural causes and age, which I am preparing myself because I know she is getting old. Headed to give her a hug now, and be thankful for the time I have had with her. Thanks for sharing this !

Oh God! I sinerely wish your dog lives as long as it is possible for dogs to live. I can see your intense love and affection for the pet and I wish him good health. Take care.
