North and South Hemisphere.

I am from the northern hemisphere and I've never traveled to the southern hemisphere. I remember learning how the seasons are completely opposite from north and south around the time I was in elementary school and it was such a wonder to me. It was always 'normal' for me to have the winter start in December and summer in June. I am also used to this cycle since most of the books I've read and movies I've seen are based on the northern hemisphere. But for those of you who are in the southern hemisphere how weird is it for you to know that we live through different seasons? Have you seen movies and such that made you feel seasonally weird because it was based on the northern hemisphere? Other northerners feel the same as me?

I am from a European country in the northern hemisphere. In my home country we have spring from March to May, Summer from June to August, autumn from September to November and winter from December to February. When I was 20 years old I traveled to the southern hemisphere for the first time. I went to Australia and found 30 degrees in Sydney and that was their autumn. When Australia have their summer we have our winter. In my mid twenties I traveled to Kenya. At age 28 years old I spent my summer holidays in Western Australia's winter. Then when I was 29 years old I traveled to New Zealand, French Polynesia, the Cook Islands and Samoa. Again the summer is the season to go to New Zealand when it is winter in my home country. When I was in my mid thirties I traveled from Male to Gan in the Maldives. The plane had crossed the Equator. Better still back when the days when I was 21 years old I stood on the Equator when I was traveling by bus through Sumatra in Indonesia. The year before last year I traveled to Cape Town and January is a summer month there. Perfect. I like the tropics most of all. These have a hot and dry season when it is hot all year round. In the places like Australia, New Zealand and South Africa they are most pleasant for me in their summer time, my winter time. I went to Canada last year in June and July, early summer. The same as back home.

The most I'm curious is about some of the countries that celebrate Christmas during summer, like Australia and Argentina... and the images and decorations are all with snow but they don't have it. I wonder how these people feel about that.

I live in Ontario, so I'm in the Northern Hemisphere too. I hadn't thought of this really, but you ask a really good question. So many parts of English culture and seasons that the world knows, that are broadcast all over the place, are based on the Northern hemisphere.

The other day I watched part of an Australian movie and they were singing "Dashing through the snow~!" in the mid of their summer... I wondered how they felt about that!

I live in Argentina, since you particularly mentioned it in one of your replies. I'm originally from the U.S. so can say in all honesty that the seasonal differences are quite mind boggling! lol. I've been here in Argentina for nearly 10 years and I STILL can't get used to the fact that it's usually over a hundred degrees here for Christmas! I can't really bring myself to listen to some of my favorite Christmas carols or songs anymore. Like....Let It Snow or White Christmas....lol. Of course, I used to live in NYC so it's quite the difference. I can't say that I've ever felt seasonally weird by seeing things in movies or anything. It happens, though, when I'm exchanging emails with friends and family in the States and they're talking about it being below zero while I'm running around in shorts and a t-shirt! lol. We don't get snow here in Argentina and I can honestly say I truly miss it. Certainly not the driving around in it but the crispness in the air or the feel of it on my skin. I'm a bit nostalgic about it. lol. If you really think about it, it is a truly mind-blowing concept.
