French,Japanese and Spanish which is the most suitable for me

February 22, 2011 8:10am CST
I like to learn languages and plan to choose one of them as my foreign language. French is similar to English,I could use English to learn French.Furthermore,I hope that I could make a journey to France after I graduate from high school. Japanese is the language similar to Chinese.I think that is the easiest foreign language for me,a Chinese,to learn. Spanish is the 3rd most common spoken language in the world. It is very useful and there are increasing South Americans do business in China. What do you think?Which language do you recomend?

I think in the future, you need Spanish. Because now it is one of the most common spoken language and you can use it very frequently. My advice is Spanish. Good luck.

It can be very enriching to your life to learn a new language that is not native to your own. the wisest decision is to choose a language that you will get the most use of. Learning a language and never getting to use can very well defeat your purpose. Good luck in your choices.

I recommend you take the language where you are going to. If your future destination after high school will be France then learn French there. I've always been fascinated by French lingo. If you find Japanese Nihongo is easy to learn, then you may be able to do basic self study on Japanese while you learn French in France. Spanish indeed (w/c I've just read) is the 2nd spoken language in the world. If I speak, it's easy to learn Spanish for me because our place was once inhabited by spanish conquerors. As for me I'm taking Spanish for my class instead of French. Bahasa Malaysia is also offered in my course. And I want to have short course and self study about Japanese Nihongo because I think I would be spending some of time in Japan someday and you know what I thought if I learn nihongo and i already know English, I could work there as translator or anything to do with communications. Good luck in your choosing!

I am French, and my first foreign language was Spanish. French and Spanish are two latin languages : if the vocabulary is not the same, the grammar is similar. English is from a different family, and more near Dutch or German than from French or Spanish. I don't know anything at Japanese. France, Spain and Japan have three different but great cultures, and personally my choice would be a cultural choice -- I can't judge here : I am proud to be French as you are proud to be Chinese -- more than a business choice. If you know very well a culture and a language you will be able to use them to get a job, even if your choice is not the "3rd most common spoken language in the world" but the 200th. So, chose the language tha you will enjoy more to learn.

I think that you will find that French and Spanish are quite close in vocabulary and grammar; English is rather different from both. Japanese is a very different language from Chinese, even though it may use some Chinese characters and loan words. Spanish would probably be the most useful third language for you. For Europeans, Americans and Japanese, I would recommend learning Chinese though it is quite a difficult language for us because we don't use 'tones' in speech in the same way.

Thanks for your recommendation!

Spanish is of course very widely spoken internationally as you say; but then so is French...not as much as Spanish, but French is spoken in several continents, including Europe (of course), Africa, North America, Asia. French is a little similar to English due to Latin influences; but English is more similar to German, Dutch, Scandinavian languages due to strong Germanic connection. French, Italian and Spanish have strong similarities (Romance languages). But in the end I think you should learn the one you feel happiest with if you are doing it for pleasure. Good luck!

Well if you truly want to go to France, learn French. But any language will have its difficulties, they just may be in different areas. My family and I are all learning German, we test new words and use as much as we can regularly, But we are not actively studying it hardcore. The time and effort you put into learning a language will determine how easy or hard it will be for you to learn.

Thank you for your sincere advice,I know what languages learning means for me and I really want to go to that countey,so I would try my best to learn that language. By the way, some of my friends say that German is a very difficult language to learn. They said that if the time spend on English learning is three years ,Russian learning is five and the number of Greman will be seven. So, I think that you probably work hard at Greman learning.

That will depend on where you really want to go. As a safe answer, just learn the translation of the most common phrases such as "Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening" or something like that. That will be a great help once you visit one of those countries that speak the languages you mentioned.

Thank you for your response! I have already known where i want to go and which i should choose.

Hey arsenalliang, When you want to pick and choose a language to learn, you should choose one that you like. Learning a language is not easy. It requires motivation, which is why you should choose the one you like most. If you believe that you like French the most, choose to learn it. Who knows, it will probably help you out in the future.
23 Feb 11
Hi MichealNil, You are right,I should choose the language I like most rather than the most useful one.Whichever I choose,I will try my best to master it.
