Dogs as Doorbells . . .

Our place at the subdivision is surrounded with vacant lots, with just 4 neighbors nearby. All of us has 3 dogs or more. Early last night, the dogs inside our front yard and back yard kept barking so we peeped at our window. We saw someone using a flashlight to get "kamias" (the sour fruit used in cooking)at its tree on the front vacant lot. We laughed when we saw that it was the caretaker of the vacant lot and we said hello to him and asked him to just give us some and so he did. The dogs still barked at him though he always frequent the place to visit. So you see, how much the dog gave us protection . They serve as our doorbell.

Sounds like you have good dogs who are doing their job! I live out in the country, with no close neighbors. If somebody pulls into the driveway, or walks into the yard, she lets me know before they ever get to the door. There's a dirt road across from the house, and if somebody lingers on the corner too long, she'll let me know too. She even gives me a bark when the school bus is coming with my grandson. Today I watched to see how far in advance the dog actually heard the bus, turns out it's almost half a mile away before she gives me a bark warning that the bus is coming. I like having my alert-dog keeping an eye on things!

Yes, like your dog , our dogs are really guard dogs. So, we don't mind if they consume more rice than ours.

The old saying is the smaller the dog the louder the doorbell. The bigger the dog the faster ther intruder has to be..

We also have dogs and yeah, they are irritating sometimes because they keep on barking out of nothing, even on the cockroach that they see at night. There was a time that in the middle of the night, one of our four dogs will just bark because he saw a bird resting on the tree, all of us were awaken by that because all of them barked together. My husband keep telling them to keep quiet and stay put but they didn't listen. So what my husband did was to shoo away the pity little bird.

Well at least we are assured that they are really guarding us for anything and it proved that they aren't sleeping all the way at night.

First I love dogs, cats and all animals. On behalf of cats I have had 2 that in their own way alerted the family to outside happenings. Both, when hearing a strange noise would go from window to window and watch. Our neighbors had a cookout in the backyard once and my siamese paced the floor and finally found the kitchen window was the closest to the action. She sat there for a couple hours. If my cat is going room to room, window to window I'll go look too.

We had a Great Dane once that would put his head over the 8 foot fence and beg for food from our neighbors when they had a cookout. I couldn't see over the fence even if I jumped.

Really he did that? Well, a great Dane is really a big dog, so he could easily put his head that way, just to take a look at a neighbor's cookout. Clever of him to do that. His smell cannot deceive him.

At least you have pets who can serve as your lookout or doorbells too.

We live in the country and can hear when someone crosses the cattle guard, but the dogs let us know even before that that someone is coming. They are the worlds best early warning system. No one can come into the yard without them barking.

Cockapoo, - Cockapoo excited he is on a car ride.
My dog is also a doorbell and lets me know when someone is outside or at the door or even pulling into the driveway. He is good about that so i know when he sees someone or even hears someone outside. He does bark sometimes for no reason but it bothers my parents and us when he is barking at nothing, or maybe he hears something we dont as they say animals have a good ear for things that humans cant hear. He is a really good dog and even though he uses the bathroom inside the house he is still my child to me and my baby boy and i will always love him not matter what. I believe every dog is a doorbell as i have had three dogs and they all do the same thing.

Wow, is that your dog in the picture? He is cute, just like our Tzi tsu too. Yes, dogs have keen smell and ears. At the slightest sound and different smell, they would whimper or bark. They really are useful to us humans too. We should be thankful if we have dogs.

I have three "doorbells". Each on his own would be suficient as a doorbell but they think they all have to alert us at once. The two small ones have very annoying barks and the big one sounds like a cannon going off. She has not learned to use her "inside voice". They all bark if they can see anyone at all, even at a distance, it doesn't matter. If someone should happen to make it all the way up to the front door they go crazy . I never have to worry about anyone sneaking up on us, if they do get close they will be detered by my three very brave companions. One will nip them at the heels until they are so distracted they will leave, One will jump up and down in front of them untill they are dizzy. And the big one... well, I'm not sure what she would do and that is the scariest one of all She is still just a pup but is very protective and still not aware of her own strength. They can be very annoying when they are all together in one room but we love them and they bring much joy to us.

That may be a good use for our lovely pets. Yes, they could be demanding for attention at times. Good for you that you have your dogs inside. As to our neighbors, they have like a pack of dogs that they are taking care of. They are just all over the place. They are like a threat for those who deliver water and mail. I was away from our house for like a year because of work and when I got back, I was welcomed by these dogs with their tough stare but I just showed that I am tougher so they went away. They have not bothered me since. I had a dog once but we gave it away because my parents are asthmatic. When I will have my own house soon, I plan to have a pug.

That's the reason why we keep our dogs inside our yard. They run after those tricycles, when it gets inside our neighborhood. We have to shoo them in, because they might bite and it would be a greater problem for us, having them treated . Pug is so cute and cuddly. It doesn't shed its furs.

I wish my dogs would serve as doorbells sometimes. I use to leave the back door wide open when we were sleeping. Our dogs sleep in bed with us. (Yes, they are spoiled) My husband called me at work 1 day and said, "Penney(our cat) had a cat trapped in the basement." The dogs never even heard the cat come in the house. The dogs didn't even know something was going on until I came home to get the cat out of the basement. My husband didn't want to get scratch by a strange cat. (BIG BABY) HA, HA

Probably your dogs are what we call the "toy dogs". They weren't used to guarding the house maybe.

Dogs has it advantages and disadvantages. Of course aside from being cuddly, they can really protect you on certain levels and I appreciate that. Most of our neighbors keep 1-2 dogs while some keep 5dogs overall, and I am quite unhappy w/ that. These dogs can really bring you torture, when you sleep esp when the babies are sleeping. They wont stop barking!Even if there's no one around! And the fact that they really smell and their owners arent really responsible, good gracious!

You have your point there. Barking even if there's no people around could sometimes be irritating though.

Hi SIMPLYD, I love my dog. I can always tell how he bark if someone is outside. I live on a farm with alot of cows. They don't come up here much. I can tell by his bark if its a cow or someone outside. I live in the middle of nowhere. So it's good to have a dog that you can trust with your life.

Truly, with that, you can say that the dog is really a man's best friend.

My dog is a puppy but she does protect me.one time she saw one of my friends come towards me and she started barking hysterically and she actually bit my friends knee caps. My dog is 6 month blue eyed husky. We had for a month now.she is already used to the family. So I would say she is pretty protective.

Yes, a dog can be overly protective of a person, specially if he/she is pampered. So, they too need to be taken cared of, so they will remain that way to us always.
