My youngest son is constantly having constipation problem, he can have no bowel movement at all for more than 3 days, and whenever he have the bowel movement, he will bleed and now he is afraid of doing it. I have tried to let him eat more fiber rich foods like banana, papaya and also sweet potato, but I still don't see any result. What I did now is to let him have some medication like "lactul" which will make the stool soft. But I am worried that it will have side effect if consume too much. Did your children having the same problem, what is the method that you use to solve this their constipation problem.

For some children banana may cause constipation. Papaya adds heat to the body which is why I think he bleeds while passing stool. Don't think sweet potato is having any fiber in it. Please give spinach during his lunch everyday. Do not give thick or condensed milk. Soak a few dry grapes in the night, smash them and have your child drink it with the water. Everyday spinach works miracles. Note: Do not give spinach in the night.

Really, banana will cause constipation? I though banana is the best food to help in constipation. I will check this out. I will try to give him spinach, but do I need to smash the spinach since he is only 2 year old?

I think what you said is quite true when we feed our kids pasty foods, there will be no chewing process and therefore no mixture of saliva which will mix into the food and it help to digest the food better, therefore will have a better digestion and which can improve or prevent constipation. I agree with that, I will try to make him chew but to do that I think I will need more time to train him.

Yes, most popular constipation relievers are banana and guava. Some people react exactly opposite to this. Since he is 2 years old already, try not to give anything in paste format. Mild smashing is acceptable. Feeding things by making them to paste does not indulge its fiber qualities. Chewing and swallowing makes the food intake to be fibrous. But do not begin with it immediately. Try to steam boil the veges, spinach and cut them to very very small pieces and ask him to chew and swallow. Some kids tend to swallow just like that which is dangerous too. So try to introduce the chewing habit slowly. I feel that all your efforts are getting in vain because you feed him as a paste.

No, banana is quite constipating. Rice cereal is also constipating. Whole grains are needed, or as mentioned, prune juice. And lots and lots of water. If your child won't take water, water down whatever he does drink.

I don't know what part of the world you are in, but have you tried raisins, grapes, and popcorn? I know that sounds a bit silly, but those three things work WONDERS for helping a kid poo. Apples too, in any form (cut up slices, apple sauce, juice) also does an amazing job. If he's an older child and drinking cow's milk, have you tried reducing the milk fat in the milk, by going down from whole milk to 2% or lower? For my kids, they can only drink no fat milk. The fat in the milk makes them constipated very quickly. They can have whole milk cheese however. The process of making the cheese starts the break down of the milk fat, so it's easier to digest. It is true about bananas helping to cause constipation. When my kids (or myself) have diarrhea or really loose stools, I hand them a banana and it clears up within a few hours.

Hi, My son used to encounter constipation for about 2 days and I was so worried. SO what I am doing is to let him eat some bananas and prunes. Let's give a try for Sunsweet,it definitely a good snack and it helps for constipation. If your son like to drink prune juice, then you can simply gran a bottle and make a cup of prune juice for him. Just wondering how old is your son? If he is below 1 year old, it is better to consult with your paed on this constipation issue. Sometimes home remedy may not work well and not to delay more, bring him to doctor for medication. It is not a good sign to have constipation quite often and have to solve this problem as soon as possible.

Hi, My son is only 2 year old, I have tried prune juice but he just doesn't like it. I have also tried Sunsweet but he also doesn't like it and he will only take the most is one piece. I have actually consulted the doctor and what the doctor gave is the "Lactul" which will help to soften the stool but I just worried that what will happen if let him have that for a long time. What I can only do is to pump in a 10ml of diluted glycerin and that will make him pass his stool within a minute. But he really afraid of doing that.

hello. I understand your son is experiencing constipation. here are some tips to do (1) assess the cause of the problem. sometimes constipation may also be due to stress like having an exam at school or having a change in the environment like transferring to a new home. (2) assess the type of food your son is eating. High fiber food is good for digestion. Drink plenty of fluids, at least 8 glasses a day. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Try to innovate on the food being serve. Remember that children nowadays are fun of foods that are fried. Food served must be nutrious and appealing. A great challenge for the mothers. (3) try to ask for help. seek medical advice. Constipation is a sign/symptom of a bigger problem if not solve.

Hi anna18, Thank you so much for your information but I would like to let you know that my son is only 2 year old so I think answer no 1 is not applicable. No 2, I know that high fiber food can help in digestion, but I have tried many like papaya and banana, but they just doesn't help. For no 3, Doctor have prescribe some medicine to help to soften the stool, but I do not really like to use medicine for a long period of time to solve this problem.

My son is 2 year old and he only takes soy milk, He afraid of passing stool because he had bad experience in that and he had bleeding each time. I have let him eat vegetable daily but he just wait for at least 2 to 3 days and until his stomach is really full then only he will have bowel movement. That really make me worried and just hope that he can do it everyday or the 2nd day at least.

Hi yspmyl, My brother’s son had the same problem and his doctor suggested giving banana everyday. There are different types of banana available in our native place and some may add the constipation and doctor prefer the exact one which is small in size and good for constipation (I am not sure that kind of banana available in your place and I know the name only in our native language). Soak some raisins in overnight and extract the juice in the morning and give the same to him empty stomach on every day. Else give him plenty of plain water in empty stomach. You can try all these home remedies and in the meantime take him to a good child specialist to find out the exact problem with him. Please do visit a child specialist at the earliest. I am worried about his bleeding.

Hi Sreekala, I am worried about his bleeding too, and he himself afraid of doing it because he feel the pain and that is why he refuse to do it. I too prefer the natural food like fruit than give him the medication. Thanks for the recipe, I will try that and see if it will work for him. This had been giving me a lot of headache for me.

My son is 2 year old and I have actually tried the prune juice but he just do not like it. Many friends of mine a also recommended prune juice but I just cannot get him to drink that. I think the function of olive oil is similar to the medication that my son took, that contain of some amount of glycerin which can help to smooth and soften the stool. I am just worried of the side effect that the medicine if is given for him for a long time.

When my kids were young and were constipated the doctor had me use glycerin sticks that were like small waxy sticks that you just place inside of them and hold for a few seconds. It always worked and they didn't have to take anything. Now that they are older they take ducolax stool softener or I mix metamucil in their juice.

Hello! I understand why your child is behaving that way, I just knew that its very painful and hard for someone not to throw out the excess garbage in our bodies regularly. You may try feeding him with vegetables especially those that are leafy and fibrous. Pineapple and papaya are two fruits which could help your son's condition as well same with Prunes and prune juice. Teach him to consume many liquids or fruit juices, its better that way rather than to resort taking medicines, if nothing happened still, then have him seen by a professional doctor. Hope he gets well soon...

It is hard to make him drink a lot of liquids like juices, he even doesn't like to drink a lot of milk, a bottle of 8 ounce milk will last him for half a day.

hello. here are some things that you can do: (1) assess the main cause of the problem. is it related to school, such as an exam is coming; a new baby is on the way?; transfer to a new house?. all of these would lead to stress which my be manifested in the form of constipation. in medical field, we call that psychosomatic. (2) assess the eating habits of your son. (3) let your son drink alot of fluids. encourage your son to eat food high in fibers such as fruits and vegetables. (4) encourage your son to increase his activities like go into sports to facilitate GI motility. (4) if symptoms persist, please consult your doctor.
