UserName: Real Name Vs. Fake? Meaningful Vs. Stylish? How You Decide Ur UserName?

Username : Real name or Fake Name. How to choose i - Username gives an impression of our personality. How do you choose it.
India
March 5, 2011 3:01am CST
Dear Friends, Fake user names always make me curious about the identity or personality or character or attitude of the person. I have imagined an interview asking users how they have chosen their usernames? My imaginary responses are: CatLover: Because I like cats! CandySeeker: Because I like candies! OldFan: Because there is an old fan in my room, and I hate it very much! AnimalSanta: Isn't it great? NewsBox: My friends used to call me as I always gave them latest news! LazyPlayer: Please don't ask this question. LongMan: Well, you can see! SexyRose: Oh, my boyfriend gave me this name! ElectroManiac: ???? ComputerCharger: ??? I think mostly people come up with username to show who they are and how much unique they are. I have always related username with person's character and personality. They are our presence online...How do you manage your online presence? Do you want people to instantly identify you by looking at your username? Or You Don't? I think both have positive and negative aspects -- Real Name vs. Fake Name: REAL NAME ***Friends can easily find you out. They can spot you from many other usernames. ***Real name helps in a more personal conversation sometimes. It gives personal touch to your responses. ***It makes you a bit more reliable. It gives your impression as a serious and dependable person. FAKE NAME OR NICKNAME ***Congrats! Your identity is safe. You can do anything on the internet. Enjoy yourself WildLady4U! ***No one can relate it to you easily, unless you told them that it's yours. ***It can be special or unique or imaginary or creative or anything! BUT NOT REAL. I thing choosing a username that has got nothing to do with your real is not a bad idea and it can positively highlight what you are trying to do online and thus can make you unique. I WANT TO DISCUSS THAT: Do you ask yourself before choosing a username -- How would I like other people to talk to me? Do you want to read your responses as -- Hi LoverBoy_JK3 or Hi Sam instead? Do you not think that hearing or reading your real name is nice when talking to somebody else in a discussion? Or Real name is dangerous to use? Do you choose nickname or fake name with hidden meanings to it? Or why did you chose your nickname? Or there is no reason at all; you have chosen just anything, easy to remember. What factors influenced your choice Really I am interested and would like to know stories behind your nicknames or usernames. (Please Note: All the usernames used in this discussion are my imagination. I have used them to give examples and to elaborate my view. I have no other intentions whatsoever.) . .

Hi Narendra See I dont use the numerics if your name is nothing more than numbers. I have seen one mylotter whose username is digits only Well, my name or rather the username is just an abbreviation of my real name leave aside "the". My avatar is me. Unfortunately I have no historical backing that I loved myself too much but I think this name is quite easy for all to read and pronounce...I hoped I would be famous and so I should christen myself in a way all can feel comfy with

Hi thesids, Well, it means your name is full form of S.I.D.S. Wow! you have a very long name. With such a big long name, it is good to keep it abbreviated and small so that people can remember it. Would you too like to hide your name? Or will share when asked? How you will show your presence in the world of internet? Hello dyingbeauty, Great long hair!

@beauty Never thought that you had such long hair... @narendra: My name is Siddhartha that is where the sid comes from and the S is from the title Shanker. that makes sids. I am an open book and you can ask me anything anytime dear... there is nothing to hide. Actually one of my ex-boss (an Australian) had problems calling me with my full name. Indian and Australian accent differences. So he asked me if I would be ok with Sid. I loved that name and since then it is my name on the internet, though only a few websites these days. My presence on the world of internet is a small pixel on a large plasma TV set but there is my pic if you need the larger verison.

Actually, that's my username for every site i have joined and i would like it to remain that way. Giving my real name, would really be revealing all about me. My discussions mostly tackles about me so i just want to hide in my user name. Anyway, i have already revealed my picture, so i guess that's enough already.

Okay SimplyD, as you wish. Yes, it is more than enough. People can identify easily by your picture...what else is needed. Suny, it is rather easier to keep same username for every site we are member of. Since it is not password, we can keep it same for all and there is no problem in it.

Wow! that is nice. I like the way you have created your username. It is like Simply Diana, right? If given opportunity would you open your real name? What is the reason behind not using your real name? Why did you keep it secret? Isn't it great that people will call you by your real name during conversations?

i used se7enthbird for my son is the seventh person who used our name. my name is manuel and i am the third, the third person in our family who has manuel as the name. i have 3 more brothers who is named manuel and i named my son manuel too. so we call him seven. bird is just a cute name that my wife calls our son. we got it from the cartoon pocoyo were there is a character there that is sleepy bird. when our son is sleepy we call him sleepy bird, when he is hungry we call him hungry bird. so i end up using seventh bird. i have no intentions to hide my identity what you see is what you get.

Hemlock Spruce is my pen name and I had been using it ever since. It is my alter-ego. I started using it when I was in college. At first it was in the intention of hiding my real identity because I had been writing about lost love and stuffs like that. Hemlock is a tree, grows constantly and remain unharmed by winter. It has a dark side, it has poison. Just as I am, imperfect.

Yes, I have learned that Hemlock is an evergreen coniferous tree. It is very useful for its lumber as well as poison. Good choice. So you have chosen it to hide your identity. Congrats, no one can know you until and unless you tell them who you are. Why you added 25 at the end?

I added 25 because I already am 25 years old. My former hemlockspruce has 23 at the end because I was 23 at that time. My college friends already knew that time that it was me. They said it is obviously my writing style even if I changed my name. Some of my friends can't find my facebook account. This makes me laugh because they keep on adding the ones with my real name in it. But the truth is I am not using it because I frgot the password. lol

The pen name cae to me during the time of my life that I can describe as "The point where light and darkness meet.." The saddest part of my life. Yet that was something I am so thankful of because having hemlock in my life saved me from being desperate. I found her just in time along wth my pen and paper. I was able to pur my emotions into writing. Now my writings are oftenabout love and happiness. I am now a happy and jolly person. :)

I chose my username for a couple of reasons. 1) I prefer not to reveal my real name and 2) I wanted something simple. I figured sacmom was the perfect username for me, at least when I first signed up anyway. Not only is it short and easy to remember, but it's a part of who I am...a mom that lives in Sacramento! LOL Happy mylotting!

Happy day! Yes, I prefer to the innocuous on the internet..my real identity not revealed. I chose "pergammano" as it is an ancient craft that has been resurrected by both the Dutch & Spanish. In the Ancient City of Pergaman, it was writings, art & musings found on parchment paper (a form of)! The name of this art form, today is "pergamano" spelled differently as I have added another M! It is one of my favourite hobbies, that I do make some money from. It is not a popular art form as it is very time consuming and intricate...but I do love the history of it, and so glad that it has re-surfaced as an art form! I chose the name, as it is distinctive, but has a link to history. Take care...have a great weekend...and Cheers!

AHA....narendra2n....I caught you peeking! You had to take a look at my profile..to know that I was female...LOL! Another reason I like the name as it is somewhat genderless!!! And my profile is about as old as I am....seemed to forget that it should be up-dated occasionally! A thought has crossed my mind, as you are so wise & learned of the FAQs and guide-lines...are you a resurrected soul here. Your eloquent writings remind me of another member, can't think of name..that disappeared sometime ago! Have a great weekend...Take Care...and Cheers!

I am happy to know that you love your hobby so much that you have adopted it as your identity online. So, you want to hide your identity. Mostly females prefers to hide their identity, right? Many thanks for appreciation. Believe me I did not look at your profile before writing this comment. Yes, just after you responded to my comment, I had a chance to check your profile (before writing this comment). You know what, there is nothing to indicate your gender. So, it is still a puzzle for me. Yes, your username is neutral and that is another aspect of a username -- It can hide our gender too!. I am as new as my number of responses show. I have never been here before. This is my first entry to myLot. Actually, I have searched and read through many discussions related to guidelines and FAQs and have learned a great deal from them. I have thoroughly read the FAQs. My second-last and last discussions gave me extreme knowledge about myLot and how things are done here. You too have a great weekend. Good luck!

Interesting discussion. When I am online, unless it is facebook that has me real name, I yse my nicknames. I have been using two nicknames for over 11 years and as soon as someone sees it they know its me. My nicknames were given to me, as with Gtdonna, it is because I come from the capital of my country that is named Georgetown (GT is the shorten form) and I am a Donna or layd in Italian.

Everyone and anyone who has the pleasure to acquaint themselves with me know right off the bat that I am a very hardworking girl. My real name is misspelled so I felt that since my own real name is unique that so should my user name be as well.

My Spanish-speaking coworkers are now very professional, since my so priceless discussion no one speaks outside of English, lol As for my name it is not too difficult to figure out, however I personally do not list it because of my secondary industry. My ex-husband posted some of my runway day pictures which caused me a hefty law suits due to impingement of rights. Although I came out okay in the end, it was a bad two years of my life. For which now I am so cautious and try to keep my personal life out. He was my husband at the time and caused me so much damage and harm, so I am always leary as to what others can do. I do continue my caring character though, although always looking out for my back.

Hello Narendra, Great discussion. You have great creativity, and it is evident from you discussions. I am still laughing after reading your fake interview. AnimalSanta! what an imagination buddy. LazyPlayer -- "Please don't ask this question." Cause he was lazy in his game? Ha.. Ha.. Ha..Ha.. My username is my real name. My name is Nishant. 5 comes from by birth date which is 5th of August. Nishant as username was not available in many sites so I added 5 and my first initial N after it to make it my username. I think you have done the same. I keep my username my real name always in all the sites I have joined. I also think that I can use other nicknames or fake names in future to give an attractive appearance to my username.

I use Mickie as my username because I used to get called Micky by my dad. I chose to spell it Mickie because I thought that was more feminine. As a child I loved Micky Mouse and grew up with that pet name. The reason I put a number after it is for my age. I was 30 when I joined here so I always know how long I have been a member at a site for by the number after my username. I cannot believe I have been a member here for 4 years now. There you go, I'm giving my age away now, lol!

Most of my usernames have something to do with my hobby, my likes, or something personal. palonghorn (which technically I'm not anymore lol) came about because when I signed up for mylot, I had moved from Austin, Tx ( home of the Longhorns) to Pennsylvania. Another one I go by is tx_camo_girl.......I love camo, and hunting. I use to go by txwildblaze...I'm a wildland firefighter, redhead. And I went by scrappin_fireghter...I love doing scrapbooks, and again, the firefighter side of me came into play. I do however, give my real name to a few that I chat with on a regular basis.
