Last night on the news, there was a segment about an elderaly woman who supposedly received a notice from Publishers Clearing House that she had won something like $300,000, but that she had to send them $1000 to get it. She did it. The money went to somewhere in Mexico, and she is out of luck. Publishers Clearing House is a legitimate contest, but this was someone scamming in their name. Really, I thought everyone understood that you never have to pay money to win money. If you win, and it is legit, you will get the money without any payment on your part. That's as bad as paying money to get a job or take a survey. Legitimate offers don't charge you. They pay you.

I received a lot of those emails and some are really pro in scamming but that's the catch, if they ask your credit card or money from you then you have to doubt and do a little research. I felt bad for that old lady, sometimes people or even fly by not companies do this for living that's why we have to be careful.

If you are poor and knowing you won $300,000 definitely you will ride in this kind of scam. And sad to say there are still some people are victim of this scam. Just like what my office mate experienced. He got a call and saying he won a laptop and cellphone, and come to our office to pick up the items and bring your credit card for verification. Obviously it is scam, why you have to bring your credit card just to pick the items? Why not bring Identification Card for verification? So before we excite of their win-win items, please think first.

Absolutely correct. As soon as a credit card is mentioned, you should know its a scam.

Correct! If you win and it is legit you will get your prize without any payment to be made to them! That's what i keep telling my senior in-laws, because they keep receiving those texts that they win and they have to call Atty. so and so. My husband and i keep reminding them of the above. How scrupulous those scammers could be!

Just keep an eye on them....the urge to follow up on those kind of things is too strong for some people.

Sometimes the words used are so persuading and that we are enticed by the idea of a bigger amount of money that we overlook the fact that it could be a scam. How can you win if you did not join in the first place?

I know...it boggles the mind how easily some people allow themselves to be ripped off.

You are absolutely right. There are so many cheaters use this kind of trick to lure fishes. Actually, we got so many this kind of trick here. Some seem so real, they got websites and they got so many things which make them look legit. Well, when you are lured in the first step, they will let you send money for tax to get the larger amount of bonus. Well, these cheaters cheat because they know people will lured by money. Actually, just remember, there is no free lunch in this world, and don't expect too good things falling from sky, then we will can't be cheated.

I suggest we go by the old saying, "if it sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true".

I think my mom did that contest and they made her buy all these vitamins even before she can start playing.

I think it must have been something else. You never have to buy anything to enter a Publishers Clearinghouse contest. If she had to buy something to enter, it was a scam.

Aw, poor old lady. I can't believe some people are willing to go this far to "earn" some cash. I think there should be more attention put to this subject so that other people won't fall for this scam, especially the elderly.

You're absolutely right. That is probably why they put it on the news. Something similar happened to my son a couple years ago. He got a notice that he had won money, and, although, he knew it was a scam, he wanted to see how far they would go. They gave him a phone number to call, and he did, then they wanted money. He played with them for a while, never planning to send any money, and eventually they just left him alone. It didn't accomplish anything, but at least he tried.
