This discussion is not really about music, but I could not find an art one, so I though music lover would be appropriate for a portrait of Jimi Hendrix.
This is no ordinary portrait of Jimi mind you. It has been done with 5000 guitar picks!
The artist did it to raise money for charity which was really awesome as it was sold for £23,000!
Check it out here as it is pretty amazing. http://www.recyclart.org/2011/03/hendrix-portrait-with-5000-guitar-picks/
Have you ever come across anything unusual that has been used to create art?

hi Rawbill that really is amazing in being made of guitar picks.
I was just sent an article showing the most unique chalk 3 d drawings
by this elderly man. they were all just amazing drawn from chalk
on the sidewalk and images stood out like things with real
'dimensions on that flat sidewalk. one was a waterfall with a
young woman in a bikini sitting on the edge. all flat but made 3 d
to have real dimensins. it really fooled ones eyes.that waterfalls
looked real. I have not a clue as to how he managed it.

I have seen those images in emails a lot over the years. There are a few people doing it, but one guy in particular is probably the best and most famous for it. The way that he makes them look 3D is that the drawings are a lot longer and stretched out than they look from the camera angle that he is using for the photo. When you see a side view of the drawing you can see just how far down the path that they stretch. He is amazingly talented!

I know it's wrong but I so envy people who have such gifts and talents. I would never be able to do something like that in a million years...let alone think of it.
It's an awesome picture and I'm happy to have been able to see it. Thanks for sharing.
They sometimes have a display in the county council building in Tamworth of recycled items. They can be turned into art, clothing or other useful items. The amount of creativity on display is mind blowing. They also have art works on display there sometimes too and these are also usually very notable.

Yes, I know what you mean. I get a bit jealous when I see these creations sometimes too, as I often think "hey, I could easily do that if I had a workshop and the equipment", but maybe I am just kidding myself. My creations might turn out to look just like the rubbish that they came from!
The only art I have seen in Tamworth is that big Golden Guitar!

What a terrific picture and fabulous website. I am not really wide awake to make a big contribution here.It is early, but I had one of my rare bouts of insomnia, probably due to the four hour nap I took yesterday. One of the things I have liked seeing is recycled broken china made into all kinds of mosaics. I even made one myself. I save bits of glass and china all of the time, planning to do this. I recently bought an out of print book called Rags, a Little Bit of Nothing, that has wonderful projects made with recycled materials and salvaged materials of all kinds. I also, somewhere, have a book called Reuses.

I am glad that you took a look around the rest of the website. I forgot to mention that the site has all sorts of recycled things on it that people have created. You will have to upload a photo of your masterpiece so that we can all see it. I have seen that type of thing before a well. Those books sound like they would be really interesting!

My son accidentally broke my mosaic, it was a table top. Have you ever looked at the site ALibris? It is a wonderful place to find out of print books.

Sorry about your mosaic.
Alibris looks awesome. The name is not familiar, but their logo is, so I must have been to the site before. There are even loads of Australian sellers on there, which I was not expecting. I have bookmarked it and will definitely be checking it out more thoroughly. Thanks for putting me on to it.

That really is an incredible picture - in a very fitting and unique medium as well! I have seen these collages done with photographs or colored sand or stones and the like, but never would have thought of guitar picks as art supplies! This certainly is an ingenious creation. Thanks so much for sharing. I always love to look at works of art, particularly such original pieces as this.

Yeah, it just goes to show that you can use anything really to make art. When we look around at the world surrounding us, really it is just art everywhere in different forms.

that is really amazing piece of art. the artist really did something that needs a lot of patience. i have seen one piece of art just this weekend. we have a local talent show called, Talentadong Pinoy (Talented Filipino). the grand winner used sand to make his masterpiece. but to appreciate his works, it should be recorded in a video clip, like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODLFOSo65C8

Wow, that young guy was very talented. It was incredible how he could make a scene appear out of nothing all of a sudden and then he could quickly turn it into another totally different scene. That was pretty awesome! Thanks for sharing it!

That was amazing. To make a potrait using guitar pick need amazing talent, concentration and dedication.
This also will shoots Fender pick sales up. I see it was all made by Fender picks. Does Fender sponsors this project?
Jimi Hendrix deserve the £23,000 which lown away the collection for John Lennon which was sold for £6,000.

One would hope that the picks were donated to him as the art was for charity. Cheap guitar picks are a dollar each here, so Fender ones would be more, you would think. That would mean well over $5000 to create the art.

Wow - what an amazing thing to do, and it turned into such an awesome picture of Jimi Hendrix - can you imagine the amount of patience you would need to have to do something like that?
It's good that the amount raised was given to Charity.
