I feel the most important thing is trust. If you are unable to trust your partner then you have nothing. I feel this is true for all relationships, not just romantic ones. You wouldnt be friends w/someone you dont trust, so why be with someone you dont trust. And that helps to allow you to be friends, another important aspect of a relationship.
