I learrned swimming at about 7 years old. I used to play outside following behind my elder brother, and he always kept on taking care of me.One day some his playmates and he were swimming in a ditch, and i stood aside watching.Since i stayed so close to the water,i slipped into it and quickly sank down!Fortunately the water was not deep and i could step on the bottom with my hands rowing blindly to raise my head onto the water!Seeing i was in danger my brother and another strong boy jumped towards me.But when they reached me i had gulped some swollws of water! With their help,i went on rowing and stepping in the water, soon after i could swim! Did you have to swollow water while learning swimming?

I got bit by a radioactive spider and after that, I woke up and I already knew how to swim.

No. But I quack all the time. There's a big chance that that radioactive spider was really a radioactive duck.

I had no chance to learn to swim as a child, but after I had been married a few years, I did get a chance. My husband, a member of the US Air Force, told me that the Air Force was giving free swimming lessons to Airmen and dependents. I was able to get into the class and learned to swim at age 34. No, I didn't swallow any water, because I followed the teacher's instructions.

I haven't. I remember in elementary school being really terrified going into a pool when we had first swimming lessons and during them a teacher would hold me and let me go after in hope I would learn to swim, but instead I just 'sank down' and once I got really a lot of water into my mouth and nose, I felt I was gonna die, it terrified me as I couldnt stand on my toes to pull myself up as water was higher than me, I remember then teacher coming for the resque, tho I don't remember how long it took him as I was in panic/shock. since then teacher left me alone and I never learned to swim. I don't actually regret it since I still have that fear of high water as I went to holidays later on in school as well and I had another teacher trying to teach me as badly. it affected me a lot mentally, so I just don't wanna try it again.

well it depends at how you look at it right. It may seem funny now, but back then for me it wasnt. however I still don't feel like I'm deprived from it or something. I don't like sea's in general, so it works for me. I'm glad you're enjoying it and have learned to swim. So keep enjoying it furthermore. have a great weekend.

Hi Oldsix! I learned swimming because of my desire to learn. Somebody told me the basics of swimming like learning how to hold your breathe in the water. I learned how to float after which I learned how to do the backstroke then do free style. Even though I can swim, I still do not like going into the deep where I cannot step on the seabed. I feel like I'm drowning so I don't go where the water is above my neck.

I don't understand it too Oldsix! I get panicky when I can't touch the sea bed. I get the feeling of being drowned when the water is already above my neck. I am not a pretty good swimmer, I easily get tired. So I don't want to take chances. I never go in the deep without a vest.

My parents put me in lessons when I was so young that I do not remember not being able to swim. My mom is terrified of water, but dad is a good swimmer. I went on to become a lifeguard and swim instructor. I think that swallowing water is just part of the process, yes it is unpleasant, but you learn from it.

even as a strong swimmer, I ingest some water if I get startled, or tired. It is unfortunately par for the course.

I probably learned to swim about the same time. I used to go to an inside swimming pool with my cousins. Between my mother, aunt and cousins I did pretty well. My one counsin that I had a huge crush on for several years took me down to the deep end on his shoulders and promised to be careful with me. When he got me down there he pushed me off and I flailed for a while until I could get to the bank and catch my breath. Each year after that I had to relearn to swim. I hated to get water in my nose or swallow chlorine water.

Oh yes!! I learnt to swim when I was 5. I donĀ“t remeber to swallow pool water, what I swallowed was sea water. I was in the swimming team til my 15 years. But I love the sea, and I love to play with the big waves, since ever. So I have swallowed a lot of sea water... ugh! =) Blessings!... Dainy

When I was in middle school, I was in gym. I tried to swim to the deep end and started to panic. The bully in our neighborhood was in my class and he dove in to save me. I swallowed lots of water in my nose and mouth. It burned my nose and I didn't like that. Fortunatlely, he got me out in time.

What a coincidence. We have similar experience. When I was 7 years old my family and I went swimming with my mom's students. The swimming pool was so deep that's why i was not swimming. The students were playing. They were pushing each other. My younger brother and I were watching them. The My brother thought it was funny so he pushed me. Like what I have said the pool was deep. I tried to swim. Fortunately I was not far from the edge of the pool. So, I survived. Because of that I know how to swim now but I'm still afraid to swim to very deep water.

I sort of learned on my own when I was a child. I use to go to the neighborhood beach almost everyday. Until one day I picked up and went on to my high school swimming team. I believe when I first started out learning I must have swallowed quite a few gulps here and there lol.
• China
25 Mar 11
The more gulps you swallowed, the better swimming skill you had.

I learned how to swim at maybe 12 years old. I was old. I learned from one of my bible teachers. I should have learned sooner because I almost drowned when I was a kid. I don't remember how old I was exactly but we had family vacation in Alabama. We went to the pool and I jumped into 4 feet of water thinking it was 3 feet (I wasn't 4 feet tall yet) and started drowning. My brother fortunately saw this and saved me. I stayed on the steps after that, too afraid to go into the water.

According to me the basic way to swimming is floating. When we can float then we don't have to worrie to sunk.
• China

Yes,that's right. But before we knew how to swim,we usually didn't know how to float,we always felt so stressed that we sank down!
