From Amazon I bought 8 Fisual Easy Fix(!) Banana Plugs to make the speaker wire connections from my amp to speakers more secure and - hopefully, sound better. Anyway, I figured out what I had to do first then I went rummaging for a screwdriver needed in order to untighten the screws on each side of the plugs, enabling the wire to enter the plug and the screws to tighten, thus ensuring the cable was secure. Now, we've got at least 6 screwdrivers and NONE would fit the screws. As you can imagine, I was rather frustrated at that point BUT I'm not prone to giving up easily. I then spotted John's Swiss Army knife in the same drawer. He's had it years and I've never had the chance to use it..until now. My God I've never seen so many little tools in one place, it's amazing. To my great relief I found a knife in there that had an end that fit perfectly into the screws. BINGO! The job was a breeze after that..well, sort of! On the back of the amp there are little plastic bungs that I had to take out in order to place the banana plugs in properly. They're tiny but extremely finnicky to get out. I managed it with yet another little tool I found on the Swiss Army Knife! Hoorah! I've got all 8 plugs installed safely and has it improved the sound? Not 'arf! CDs sound miles better now; it's like I've bought a new speaker/amp combo. I was a bit skeptical it would work actually but now I'm "sold" on these cute banana plugs and shall order some more for the system I have at Mum's that already sounds awesome without them! I will test out my turntable later as I'm dying to know what that sounds like now. I love it when something so cheap makes a big difference to my music-listening pleasure!

It seems like you had a very successful day in two ways. I like small things that make big improvements myself. We have all kinds and sizes of screw drivers, but I am never quite sure where they are. I have my own tool box and woe betide anyone who takes the stuff out of there.

Haha! I know what you mean. My FIL has a tool box with everything in it you could wish for. We, on the other hand, have a few screwdrivers but not in a proper tool box. Mind you, if I'd not been on the hunt for them I wouldn't have found the Swiss Army Knife that I ended up using for the job in hand. It makes a change buying something very cheap that does the job. In actual fact I read info on Fisual's website and they said they were tired of expensive plugs so decided to make their own. They have a great reputation now thanks to Amazon selling them on their behalf. Apparently, they don't sell them in hi-fi shops or anything..it's like word of mouth and people like me are reaping the benefits. It doesn't take much to keep me happy does it my friend?

Well now you are providing more word of mouth for them.

I had to look up 'banana plugs'. Never heard of them before. Thanks for causing me to learn something new today. Good for you for figuring everything out.

I haven't a clue. There was no explanation of the term on the sites I looked at to find out what they are.

I love working anything out regarding cabling and things. It all stems from Dad not helping me out with another hi-fi system I had years ago so I thought, "Right, I'll show you!" and connected it all myself. Have done ever since. "Banana plugs" is a strange term as they don't resemble bananas..they're certainly not banana-shaped. Perhaps someone else has the answer?

How strange. Perhaps they couldn't think of a name for them so came up with the first thing they thought of.

Hi Janey that is so cool that you did this on your own. I am happy that you don't give up easily. I have had a swiss army knife for years and use it for a lot of things. They come in handy when you can't find quite the right tool. Hope your turn table sounds better too my friend.

Hi free-man, Yes, I was determined to get these plugs sorted out as I could tell they were well-made considering they're sooo cheap. Unbelievable really for the money and I tested everything including the turntable and I'm very pleased with myself at the moment! I've ordered a few more so I can sort out the system at Mum's when I visit over Easter.

Congrats on getting the amp/speakers fixed so they sound great. I have a bazillion tools, but I don't have a Swiss Army knife. I use to have one, but it disappeared ages ago. Hopefully, I'll never need a SA knife, because I really do have a lot of tools...even for a boy!

You have at least 6 screwdrivers ,unexpectedly none would fit the screws. At the moment when you were burning with impatience,You found the Swiss Army Knife by chance and they worked not a little. It was a pleasant surprise for you to spot those little tools. At first I mistook the Swiss Army Knife for a sort of arms like dagger ,I never expected they were so ingenious.

Well, if it hadn't been for this miraculous little invention I wouldn't have been able to even start my task, never mind finish it. I'm really quite proud of myself to have the intelligence to use it in the first place. It just goes to show what we can do if we put our minds to it.

Good of you to think up a solution to loose connections, this is even better as you acted on it and the best is that you innovated using a Swiss knife when you did not have proper tools. Keep this up and engineers like me will lose our jobs! Turntable? That is antique stuff now! Brings back memories, particularly the hiding I got when I broke a LP record!

Believe me, even now you can pay a fortune for a NEW turntable. Mine is about 10 years old, bought for around £110 and the newer version is more than double that, so I'm going to keep hold of it. Heaven knows what it might be worth in another 20 year's time!
