Bussiness law, glad I took it so I can keep track of the party of the first part, party of the 2nd part and all those rights and obligations.
Typing, saved me tons of money in college because I didn't have to hire someone else to type my papers. Helped me get a temporary job or two so it made me money. Being able to hit keys without having to hunt for them is a lot less frustrating and time consuming.
Home Economics because I have an idea of what clothes and hair styles will make me look nice to try as well as colors. I also learned to figure out the cost of a meal per person or for the entire family or both. Also kept me from starving during split sessions when our school was on austerity budget and there were no lunch periods or lunchtime.
Music and Art because they brightened my day and lightened my load. What about you?

I remember Home Ec but I didn't care for it that much. I learned all of that at home with my grandmother. I didn't like the teacher either. But typing I loved. I am now able to type while I watch something on tv. Can type about 70-80 WPM. And I loved my Civics teacher. He was a great teacher.

My Home Ec teacher could have learned a lot from my Mom as far as cooking, but a 6 hour school day with an hour bus ride each way and no lunch room or lunch break makes even average food taste really good. Plus I got the class and other people wanted it. There was a waiting list during the austarity budget years. We were bugging her to have us make a meal a day. Normally they made one a week, but we said we'd bring in the food. She took the top 10 marks. We had like 50 marks.
Home Ec was dropped from some schools, but now it's back with a totally different name. Forget the name. Domestic arts or something. Now boys and girls learn sewing and cooking. Way younger than we did. Middle school.
I can't do 70 to 80. We didn't have Civics, we had Social Studies. I liked two of my SS teachers. One was really mean and hateful. Said we were all stupid and would never amount to anything, junk like that. Probably a mean drunk and we were too loud for his hangover or something.

We were on split sessions and austerity budget. No lunch. We didn't have 8 hours of school, we had 6, so we technically didn't have to have lunch. Of course, at some point during the day, the teachers let us eat and drink at our desks because they ate and drank at theirs. But if you forgot your peanut butter and jelly sandwich and bottle of water, you were sunk. The taxpayers voted down the budged three times. Split sessions meant that I got on the school bus at 6AM, arrived at 7 and left school at 1PM. The next session arrived at 12:45, went to the all purpose room and then to classes at 1:10. So the buses that dropped them off could pick us up. They went until 5:45PM and then went home. We had nothing unless our parents paid for it. Every class we received a bill from the teacher. Until each student paid the bill and received a paid stamp on it to bring back to class, we got nothing. So the first week, we mostly did nothing until our parents got a pay check and paid. No books, no gym stuff. The first week of school was a waste. You had to keep track of all these bills when you went home and then all this money when you got it or a check and then all these paid slips. They couldn't send the bills by mail because that would require stamps and they were on an austerity budget. They wouldn't build more school space for us baby boomers so the morning kids and teachers had classrooms and the afternoon kids and teachers had the same classrooms. The poor kids had nothing for months. They couldn't come up with the $ so they had no books to study and had to sit out for gym. The lunch room became a study hall because there was no money for school lunch. The bus garage no longer had buses in it because it was divided into classrooms for the 6th grade and the dividers had to be paid for by fund raisers of the PTA as well as any bus trips for any sports were done by fundraisers. We had nothing but the building when we walked in. Plus whatever our parents sent to school with us which were notebooks and pencils/pens. That was our split sessions and austerity budget. It went on for years. Split sessions means that you are split into two sessions. Austerity budget means that every single thing is cut from the budget that can possibly be cut. My husband's school went through austerity budget and he lived in a different part of our area. But I don't know very many schools who had split sessions. We had a double whammy. I do know a school that didn't have lunch served at school until 1998. Kids had to bring their lunches from the 70s on. No one would vote the school lunch program in for that school. Luckily, at the end of the 70s, they started voting regular budgets back in.
It is almost impossible to get rid of a bad teacher here. At least 2 of my teachers were drunk all the time. One was a mean drunk and the other one was really cool. He reinacted every part of history we asked him about like he was there.

No lunch room? Ss huh? My Civics teacher had a great sense of humor and would let us get away with alittle. Mean and stupid? We are pretty lucky with my grandkids teachers. Very good!

Hmmm...Typing certainly. It helped me since the time I went to college to the time I was working.
Besides Sports and a little music thrown in, our other subjects were academic.
Oh yes, sewing has certainly helped me to for small repairs and I don't need to run to the tailor when I need to sew on a button or do small repairs.

I wish I had been good at sewing. I kept threading the machine wrong and I basically never got to sew there. I had to go home and have my Mom thread the machine and sew at home. I still can't thread a machine, but I can use it after it has been threaded for me. I've heard the new machines thread easier and I might be able to do it myself.
I can sew a button, I do that all the time. I don't need a machine for that. But I am surprised at the people who have difficulty sewing one on. My Mom taught me that when I was really young and had a button come off. No time like when you need to know it.
Thanks and take care.

I often wonder what I missed by totally opting out of High School. I thought it a Great Waste of effort,(at the time) during a period of my life in which I was very busy. I stayed home and helped my Father before entering College at age 16. I found college very busy, and never had any time to wish I'd skipped it too.

Never had any time to what?
Did you complete college?
What did you study in college?
Were there any courses in college that were worthwhile?

Glad the classes were worthwhile.
Were you working on a Farm for your parents when in High School?
If you reread the sentence that says, "I found college very busy, and never had any time to wish I'd skipped it too." you can see how that is very confusing.

There aren't many classes that I can say that I was glad I took back in high school; but I would say I was rather glad I took Accounting. Honestly speaking, had I not taken Accounting, I wouldn't have the slightest clue about anything related to accounting and finance (eg. debit, credit)!
Learning the basics of accounting has taught me to be patient and meticulous, because balancing the accounts can sometimes take a lot of time and effort. Another advantage of learning Accounting is that because my brother is an accountant, whenever he talks to me about his job I can at least respond and make comments instead of just being all confused and lost at sea!

I took business math and that has really come in handy. Most of the kids who didn't take it graduated high school without even knowing how to write checks or balance a check book. Algebra I used back in the day when people programed using it, but Geometry I only use when I substitute teach. But business math, I use all the time.
I hope some young people tune into this discussion so they can make some good decisions for clases. Thanks and take care.

Typing is the one class I am glad that I took in high school. Although my career was geared in Business and Administration, the typing is the one that I appreciated because my typing teacher use to hold contests to see who could type the fastest and with less errors.
It was that class that made me the fast person I am today in many ways then just typing. It helped me a great deal with challenging myself in all I do. Plus added bonus to that is that I type 92 words per minute. lol
