plane ticket prices

Canada

Recently I traveled from Central Saskatchewan, Canada to Kentucky, USA which was a total of 50 hours traveling and cost less than $1000. My husband and I thought it might be cheaper and better to drive to Minot, North Dakota and fly from there to Kentucky. We found, though, that it would have cost us several more thousands of dollars. I don't know anything about what causes plane tickets to cost how much they do: why is a 3 hour flight (like this one probably have been)sometimes cost so much more or at the most the same as a, say, 11 hour flight? Anyone know?

I know you posted this a week ago, but I'll try to help you figure this one out. Destination is key sometimes. Oil prices are so high that airlines are charging such high fuel costs. Short trips I think use up more fuel with takeoff and landing. Taxes are a major dinger when it comes to flying. Airports really nail passengers with taxes. Airport tax, government tax, fuel tax, etc. The list probably goes on and on forever. Shorter flights costing more is probably based more on greed of the airlines rather than actual cost. Inflation of prices puts more money in their pockets. When this is not the case, it can be based on the time of year, prices always fluctuate based on the season. This is not a perfect explanation, but I do hope it helps.
