My fourteen year old Jack Russell Terrier has been falling down a lot lately.

I worry about my dear companion, a fourteen year old Jack Russell Terrier named Boomer. I have noticed her fall down a lot lately. Yesterday she fell coming in from outside and this morning she fell on the kitchen floor after unsuccessfully trying to catch her balance. It is laminate flooring but it really isn't that slippery. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on with her?

Time for a Vet check. She may have had a stroke or it may just be that her inner ear needs cleaning. Whatever I would restrict her activities until it is cleared up so that she will not injure herself. I know how active Jack Russells can be so this may be a lot easier said then done. Blessings

I lost a mixed breed dog two winters ago to a stroke he was 8 years old. Boomer doesn't appear to act like he did. She doesn't seem to scratch her ears either like they do with mites. But maybe an inner ear infection they wouldn't scratch at their ears. Thanks for the blessings.

There are many different ways that stroke can affect the brain. As for the ears, I was thinking of the inner ear that can affect the balance. If this was my dog I'd get her to the Vet for evaluation, that way you will better what to do to help her.

14 is very old for a Jack russel terrier. I fear you may have to prepare yourself for the worst. it sounds like he has had a full and loved life. best thing to do is get him checked out. it may only be an ear infection that would affect his balance. but it may be something worse. I wish Boomer the best of luck and many more years together.

Thank you for your concern. Yes I have had many good years with Boomer. I have another dog that has allergies which is her 9 year old son who was fathered by a mix breed. Pets sure can be a concern sometimes. I know I need to take both of them for a check up again.

Oh, gosh, my heart truly goes out to you..and "Boomer" and I think you have received some very good advice here from other "lotters"..a VISIT to the VET should be of primary concern! There is NO doubt in my mind, that Boomer has had a loving and fruitful life, as 14 makes her very senior for a JRT...so you have been a wonderful caregiver. It may be something simple, as we, too become unsteady sometimes. I, too, have a JRT and his name is "Brui"....but he is only 6, but just two years ago, I lost my dear friend "Tosh" a Westie, at 14 and 6 months, and the previous summer, I lost his brother "Oeuf" at 15 and 1/2....such terrible times, but it truly was old-age with both, and as we know...the "rainbow bridge" is inevitable, I pray for you and Boomer, a simple sickness..and many, many more HAPPY HOURS! Take care!

Yes I have had good advice. Guess I knew what do. Only it may be a few days before I can get her to the vet. Boomer is the most gentle dog I have ever had. Never as hyper as most JRT get. Thank you for the prayers.
