What form of physical workout can a pregnant woman do?

I do walk for twenty minutes a day and that is all the time I am able to spend standing or walking at a time. I get tired by then and have to sit down for a while or I will faint. I wanted to know what kind of physical exercise can be done. I was thinking of learning to swim. Is it okay to swim while pregnant? Or rather, learn to swim while pregnant? And I would like to know if anybody got back to shape after giving birth and how did you do it? Any tips or exercises you recommend? I also need to keep my back muscles strong so that I do not collapse like in my first delivery. Any ideas? I know to search in google but what I am asking about is whether anyone has tried something and it has worked? Please share it with me and all others too.

I know that swimming in an indoor pool is fine in pregnancy however the baby needs to stay cool so don't go in any hot hot spa. It is great to walk but only for how well you feel. It 20 minutes is too much for you then don't do quite that much. I know I felt that my bump was large at the end of my pregnancies and I didn't feel fit for my labors. One of my friends tried pregnancy yoga. After my son was born I had lots of exercise and sensible eating. I soon got back to my normal size. However I lost a lot of blood when my daughter was born. I was weak for more than 8 weeks after she was born. I want to loose weight and get back to my normal size. My son is disabled and doesn't walk. Good luck in your pregnancy staying fit and healthy.

Hi maximax. I don't know how to swim and am thinking of joining swimming classes along with my daughter. It is anyway very hot here and it seemed like a good idea. I have not tried yoga too. Will have to ask my gynec about it I guess. Well, twenty to twenty five minutes is the maximum I am able to walk. Not more than that. I start sweating and more than walking, standing in one place is difficult for me now. Thanks for the response.

Standing still is always harder than moving around. The water activities feel so good in the hot weather.

I did not see this discussion of yours Devi.I jsut wrote a counter comment in our old discussion where I had voluntarily suggested some things. I suggest, you take long walks and if you feel tired, drink some lemon juice with salt and sugar added to it. Did you faint any time after walking? If you have not done so till now ,rest assured you won't. Do breathing exercises on a regualr basis.Just take long walks, do breathing exercises, and do not keep worrying that your delivery must be easy so that you would be soon on your feet, taking care of your babies.THe more you think about it , the more you will get diffident and unwanted thoughts would flit in.God will take care.

Thanks so much. I do take walks but am not able to take long ones. I definitely need to sit somewhere and am not able to walk for more than twenty minutes. No, I have not fainted till now and don't plan on exerting myself to that extent! It is just that when I do go out for walks, I am not able to prolong it. And standing in one place for more than a minute is not possible now. If I keep walking it is okay. I just want this delivery to go easy as well as make a quick recovery because I suffered a lot for my first one. It took me a while, about a year to recover. So, am just cautious.

As long as the doctor says it is okay, swimming and water exercises are great. You do not even have to learn to swim, just get in the pool and walk and do other things that keep your body moving. In my first pregnancy, I only walked, and I was not in good shape for the delivery. During my second pregnancy I participated in water exercise classes, swam a little, walked and did some light weight training. I felt so much better after the delivery and it went much easier. Good luck on choosing a fitness plan for your pregnancy.

Hi GardenGerty. It was the same with me for my first pregnancy. I did not get much exercise and the baby had become huge inside me. And it was a very difficult delivery though I delivered normally. And I have been plagued by back pain and other problems ever since. Now that I know better, I am starting to get some exercise or at least a walk for twenty minutes every day so that this time after the delivery I do not become so weak. I do not know to swim and am planning on attending classes along with my daughter so that it will be fun this summer holidays.

I have always heard that yoga can help with pregnancy, there was this show about it, pregnant women doing yoga can help with labor too- it makes it easier. I don't suggest swimming though, it can be very tiresome..

Then, have fun with you daughter-- it could also serve as your bonding time.. With your daughter, and the child that's coming.. Good luck to you.

Hi lady. The heat is unbearable here and since my daughter's school has also closed for summer, I thought that we both could learn to swim. And it might be good exercise too. There is a place just four buildings away from my place which teaches yoga for pregnant women. I guess I can check it out.

Remembering when I was pregnant I recall my OB giving me some pamphlets as to what should and should not be done while pregnant. Reason is because I have always been the type to vigorously exercise and I was concerned at the time. Swimming was one on the list and I did so twice a week at our YMCA indoor pools. I do remember arms and leg type of exercises, along with walking as well. So I went online and found a nice link that can give you an idea of some arm, leg exercises that you can look over and see if they help because some are siting type of exercises. Not a referral link: http://www.babies.sutterhealth.org/during/preg_basicexercises.html I did not gain much weight with other children, and had difficult pregnancies to begin with. After the allotted waited time period I continued my heavy exercising.

My doctor has not given anything till now but she did tell that she would talk to me about the exercises once I start my fifth month. so I guess she will tell me about what type of exercises I can do when I go for the check up this month. The link was useful, thanks I guess they are not very hard to do and so I will definitely check them out with my physio too.
