I wonder how useful will the theories that we study be in practical world.

I am currently doing my end semester exams. I had compiler disign lap today and tomorrow i have computer networks lab and on thursday I have data ware housing and data mining lap. Then I have 5 theory exams next week. Well busy schedule. I am not sharing here to let you know what I am doing but the issue is I really wonder how useful are the theories that we study in our student life in the practical world. We learn lots and lots of head breaking theories and formulas, algorithms and programs.. It is really difficult. Hope those how has experiences will share some thing.

Hello tenrajj, I am a student like you and learn many theories in class. Those theories are useful in real life. I have used and applied every theories that I have learnt in class for my design project and competition. As for me, a mechanical engineering student, those calculus, mechanics of materials, physics and techinical drawing are useful in order to get a good design before the fabrication process. I would suggest you to enter any competition that related with your course. You will get a chance to apply those theories in the competition. Happy lotting.

Ok. then seems like it will depend upon course too.. Mine is computer science and engineering. Yea I too see the theories that mechanical student study more practical. In our college I even saw students having designed a simple car starting from scratch. Where is in my case.. the structures that we build are more of imagination as some structure that we study even does not have physical representation. Thanks for sharing your views.

Well yes, quite a lot of the information that we study, especially when younger is not used at all in the real world. If you do a specialised degree for example, you might find that that then becomes very relevant in a future career. I use many mathematical equations at the moment as we are doing up our house, and so to know what materials will be needed, I'm doing all these sums and calculations to work everything out. Even been on the design cad program and set up a prototype design.

Ok.. that gives me some hope. Thanks for sharing. Hope i will also be able to use what we learn in the college.

I know what you mean. I just think that there are things that we learn at school that are not really useful for real life situations. There are many things we learn at school and many things we study that are not necessary for real life situations.

I think only 30% of the theory that we learned in study that used in real life. 70% is the experience we gained in our daily life....

Hi there, i am studying accounting at the moment. one of my friend got a vacation work at one of the biggest accounting firm in Australia. She told me that whatever we learn at Uni is only 5% helpful as to how things work in the practical field. She told me that the employer expects us to know nothing because all the training is provided. Theoretical study is done just to develop a base that you can use at your workplace. The practical world indeed is very different from the theoretical one.

Most of the theories are neither useful for students nor adults. Adults only use some theories required in theor jobs. However, theories are important for technological development.

I wonder that a lot lately. I am not sure about that. I happen to believe that for example math classes helps us solve the problems in the future, during life, it makes us keep trying even if we are stuck sometimes and dont see the solution of our problem. About my studies, I already know that stuff I learn at uni are not exactly the same like I will face at work, but that is why I am trying to do as much internship as I can, so that I can be more prepare for the actual work I will be doing or I guess I will be working. We never know what comes next in our lives, but its important to be prepared.

Well, theories are not really useful for students' lives. Adults also don't use much of the theories they have learned. They only use theories those are related to their jobs. However, theories are quite useful for technological development .
