The Art of Farting

That was the title of an article in a magazine I read years, years ago. I could not remember if I was already in college that time. It was about the experience of two Filipinos in Europe when they went to see an opera. Then somebody farted loud in the middle of the event that turned the two Filipinos giggling. Later, they stopped upon noticing they were only the ones laughing. Also, they were the only Filipino in that opera house. Farting is such a laughing matter in the Philippines. When I made a comment in one of the discussions here in Mylot about my most embarrassing moment, I wrote it was about farting and an office mate made fun of me. It was not a big deal actually. It was embarrassing indeed not to be able to control the call of nature but it still is something to laugh about among Filipinos. We do not usually get pissed off when someone laughs because if it happens that we heard someone fart, most likely we will laugh. Do not mistake us as one rude, or insensitive, or ignorant, or tasteless lot. It is just that it is so easy for us to be happy and find ways to be happy. The world is full of negative things, mostly depressing and could kill any of us because of the stress they bring. That maybe is the foremost reason why we Filipinos laugh even at the silliest things.

at first when i look at your title i thought its about the book "zen of farting". But farting for one is a natural occurrence for me so laughing about it is not a nice thing for me. If your not in a secluded place just ignore it.

Okay, I am another of those people that is just immature enough to laugh when I hear another person fart out loud because I was brought up that you should try to only do that in the bathroom or when you are not around other people. I've even politely excused myself from a conversation and walked into another room when I felt like I needed to pass gas. But then, I also have a family that will laugh at things that are very trivial.

if i hear that from a stranger, i'll try to control my laughter. but if someone laughed hearing me fart, i wouldnt bother. there is something about the sound that could really make you laugh. the smell is another story.

bingskee.. I heard Filipinos are inclined to laugh when they hear somebody fart...and well, ideally avoid eating chillies and sour things, and everything should be alright according to me... but can we resist those pickles.. nah!!! Not farting much as yet, but yes... it is amusing... and do hope when and ever I have to... everybody else thinks it is somebody else rather than me.

at least if it sounds loud enough, it means there's not much bad smell to worry about... and you know who to stay away from at that very moment. because usually a silent fart is the one that stinks and you won't know who did it!

ha ha almost everybody here wanted it that way. that someone will be mistaken as the one who farted! i agree with you, chiumee! but i advise anybody and everybody to stay away from a crowd if there is still time if he or she is about to fart. or try their hardest to control and then go away (as if it can happen! )

I have absolutely no idea why farting tends to make most laugh and or chuckle. It reminds me of children that no matter how many times they hear they will laught until their hearts content. Funny how children will outwardly say, I farted and laught so hard about it. Laughter my friend is so very healthy and can momentarily wipe away so many issues temporarily. So unless it is stinky I would have to laugh too.

I think that it is quite amusing actually!! I am African American and Native American... and I would probably laugh too!! LOL My husband and I aren't shy about things like that in front of each other. We freely pass gas and act as if it's nothing. In fact, some of our most intriguing conversations have happened in the bathroom while the other was using it!!! I'd never be comfortable doing that type of thing with anyone else!!!

Well I think it's cool! (not farting - but that your culture allows for so much enjoyment of such! lol) I think it is a natural bodily function and it can hurt one to hold it in too long.. I don't know why it's such a big deal in some societies!

I guess that some could see this as an art. i jsut don't see it. I guess uit's all about personality when it comes to that. To each his own and then some.

hi, sender. yes, i understand. to each his own. the article The Art of Farting was written for the purpose of how to do it without getting embarrassed. it was like a how-to i couldnt exactly remember all the contents. i just remembered the two Filipinos. the title probably was intended to catch attention, not exactly saying it is an art.
