China

Hey, guys. I am from China and I am an undergraduate college student. My major is Economics. I know, although my major is worldwide and is known to almost everyone, but what I learn in China is quite different in other places. As far I am concerned, I hava a plan to further my studies to America when I graduate here and I really wonder what you guys learn in the states if your major is Economics. Or you can tell more about "economics" in your country. Do you think it is useful? How much do you wanna learn it? Do you think it's interesting? Do you think it's a noble major? Hey, I got so many questions. Recently, I have seen the video about the Yale Open Class--The Game Theory which took shot in 2007. It is great!! How I wish I could sit on a seat in Yale and listen to what these great teachers' classes!!! Hey, does anyone here wanna tell me more about it? Many thanks!!

The current system of economics seems to have changed completely in the last couple of years. You no longer have to balance the books, you can print as much money as you like, and you lie about everything! Economics has shifted from being a science to being an art - in the same sense as comedy and soap operas. It's anyone's guess what is happening at Yale.

Thank you so much for telling me this. In China, you know, under the Marxism system, our economics' classes are so different from what western's. As I wanna further my studies after 3 years here to America ,so I really wanna know what are the differences. And I could balance it well. Hey, friend, may I ask you a question? According to your file, you are more 50 years old, may I know where are you now and are you in the states? maybe you are a teacher, if so, what do you teach? Hehe, waiting for your reply, sir! Thank you so much for helping me and take care! Good luck!!

I'm in Greece. Yes, I have been a teacher of various subjects including economics, when book-keeping was still a part of it!

Wow!!! Your image on mylot looks like an ancient wise man. Sir, I am a young girl in China now. Often I am confused and ask to myself what is university for? In China, sometimes we listen to teachers, do the homework ,study study all the time to make sure you could go to colleges or universities. After that, I believe as we are grown-ups, we need to read more and widen my horizon. But, usually in China, teachers often order you be in class instead of surfing around books in lib. Sometimes, marks are more "important" than books, what you teachers have told you are more "important" than what you really are interested, even he sucks at teaching. After all , I will try my best to be a good one!! Thank you so much, sir!

What I want to learn is how to make more money, and how to make full use of money.

Honestly, economics is a social science. It is so different from fiance, accounting and so on. And mostly, if you are major in Economics, you have mostly to do some theory research instead of thinking about making more money. Hope you can understand more. Actually, most economists are not rich as you expected, and making more money is not a real economist's goal. Take care!

I went to Oklahoma City University (pretty-much the closest Oklahoma gets to "Ivy League") and was going to major in Economics ... when it dawned on me that it would be more Economically-responsible to NOT graduate The way I see it, Economics is an 'armchair activity' (the way most sciences are ... 'learning how things happen out there' than 'actually going out there and MAKING them happen'). And in my condition--outside the flow of money--it's very disheartening to see 'that people SHOULD be giving me money' when the reality is that they're not giving me money (not even 'that money owed for what I had that was taken from me'). But Economics IS useful ... much the same way that 'reading the Bible,' 'studying world-history,' and 'watching the news' is helpful---it reassures you that 'things are going the way they are supposed to in reaction to choices people make under their assorted circumstances.' Being an Economist makes you sort of a fortune-teller ... you become 'attuned to the various influences' affecting people- and products in the market, and you can tell the curious answer-seekers (businessmen, politicians ... same-difference) which way the market(s) are going to go!

Your major in Economics is a good one. If it is what you feel that you are good at, then by all means stay focus on it. It is not really my expertise for I am more on to the environmental health and safety and public health. The very reason why I ended getting my advance professional education at the Harvard School of Public Health. Although I also have my MBA major in Economics and Financial Engineering from London and Certified MBA from Cambridge. This I can tell you sitting in a world class university learning from the best in filed is worth spending the money. Economics is the same anywhere you are in the world, it is how being applied in certain countries. There are many case studies all over and you will learn a lot as you move closer to your goal in going to Harvard or somewhere else. Good luck and keep focus on your goal.

I do think economics is very noble and worthy study. I think it also goes to bed with political science and in that area I am wondering about what you said Bazingamuhaha in "what I learn in China is quite different in other places". This raises two questions for me. Is economics different in its viewpoints depending on where you are in the world and then if yes, what are the standards for? The other question is do you think in the study of economics, do countries manage more from a country or world economy and does this change over time? - anyone

I am also an undergraduate student from India with the same discipline, Economics. Though I have interest in this field, I know quite less about it. I want to learn what is economics and at least have a basic idea of world outside before I get into my second year and it becomes my only subject. I have a poor knowledge. I would want you to share your views in it. How much do you know as far as Economics is concerned. Do share or rather teach what it is all about..
