Don't your typos just embarrass you?

I read through some of my earlier posts her in mylot and was extremely ashamed of myself when I found so much typographical errors. Despite the fact I didn't have any spelling mistakes, because goodness knows how good the site's spell checker is, there were a lot of grammatical errors left unchecked. I'm not trying to be a Grammar Nazi, but it's just embarrassing reading stuff you wrote that got posted, well... not the way you wanted them to. What do you think about it?

Typos are normal. I also have lots of it. I just don't want to read it and get embarrassed. You don't really have to worry about it because we all make mistakes. It's natural. It's actually my hobby to type and post. I don't usually check what I have posted. When I see it, I just tell myself "I should have checked it before posting it." But hey, It's too late and it's okay. I didn't mean to make mistakes.

even when I already here for about a year I still make that typos errors. Like you I felt embarrassed but then I guess members will understand. I remember a friend says that in this fast moving internet era it's understandable when there will be some typos in our writing. Or something like that...

Yes, I am trying hard to correct my mistakes, but when there are about 30 or more discussions to comments I tend not to do spell nor grammar check and just hit the submit button after typing.... My bad...

I felt that yesterday too, responding to everyone's replies to this topic. Not only was I running out of ideas as to what to reply, I was also making a lot of typos. I made sure to recheck each post before posting though. It would be pretty embarrassing to make that mistake in this thread. XD

Your friend has a point, but I believe that even if no one minds, it was still a mistake that you could have avoided. Well, I guess everyone understands because they also commit the same mistake every now and then and they know that you learn from it too.

I always hate it when I look back at something I wrote and then see that I made a typo or two. Especially on little easy words. Sometimes it happens with words like "they're" and "their". I know the difference between them of course but sometimes I'll use one in place of the other when it's wrong and not even notice. I guess sometimes I just get to typing too fast I don't really notice.

I make the same mistake with it's and its too, among others. I guess that's what happens when one types too fast. We spell words that sound alike wrong.

I think it just happens! I've tried to write my discussions on Word before I copy-and-paste it on here so I could get a hint on spelling and grammar errors, but sometimes it just escapes me. I don't want to be a perfectionist, but I agree with you that it is embarassing to see what we write sometimes.

That must be pretty taxing sometimes. And yes, it happens when you least expect it, so unexpected in fact that you can't help feel a little ashamed of yourself when you see you finalized post. I'm pretty sure I probably made a typo or two responding to all those answered the thread. X.x

I always think of the same way specially with my spellings.grrr. Just so embarrassing they might think I am stupid or don't know how to read and write english. I am not also trying to make my grammar very correct but some simple stupid mistakes makes me feel dumb sometimes to others.lol OH well most of the time i just post without reading again what I wrote above.hahaha

Yes, it makes me want to curl up in a corner and just gather mold or something. It irks me when I read my own typos since I'm pretty sensitive about my writing. It's like a mental condition, but I get over it after some time and just laugh about it. No harm in looking a little silly, right?

Yep let's just laugh about it, no negative thinking 'cause we know we are capable of commenting on post here. haha.. I should give you a high 5 for self confidence! Cheers!

And I am catching your high five. Speaking of which, I was able to use the comment function to clarify a typo I made in one of my posts here in myLot. I feel much better about making typos now.

I think it's ok considering that most people in myLot have so many typos.

I guess it should be fine, but it's still something that could be avoided if we were more careful. I just think of it this way. If you make the mistake enough times, you'll probably grow out of it and commit it on lesser occasions. I hope that time comes to me sooner or later.

i dislike making typos but because i type really fast and don't always proof what i type, i do make typos. i guess if i dont have check i would rather not.

Typographical errors are borne of speedy typing and the lack of proofreading. How they come out is what really bugs me. I know its unavoidable, it's just that... Do I have to make such sill mistakes? It makes me feel ashamed of myself, especially if my post conveyed a meaning that is the complete opposite of what I wanted to say.

When my professor marks my paper and point out my grammar mistakes, I get embarrassed because I shouldn't be making mistakes on a formal paper. I don't get embarrassed for grammar mistakes I make online because it is informal. Just like in real life. I would be embarrassed if I say something wrong at a job interview but not embarrassed if I was with friends. And I consider all mylotters my friends.

Yes it is embarrassing when I make grammar mistakes, and whenever this happens I wish I had the option to delete my mistakes because having to look at my grammar mistakes forever does not boost my self esteem Also I've had trouble with grammar writing since childhood so I always feel a little embarrassed and it reminds me of those times as a child when I would make mistakes in writing In fact someone here decided to PM me, and tell me that I was misspelling the word "DOES" and at first I was a little angry, but later I realized that they helped me remember the correct spelling of the word (does) at least now I remember.

I wish that option, as well as being able to edit your posts, was available here in myLot. As for that person who sent you a message, he was either very nice or very mean. I hope it was the second. Either ways, he helped you in that way. My sister usually does that to me, and she laughs like the meanest thing in the world. Later, we would both just laugh about it.

First of all, I have to say Thank You!!! I will get back to that in a moment. About grammatical errors, don't worry about it. You are doing great from what I have seen and like a previous poster said, no one is perfect. I am just delighted to find another poster who can write in complete sentences, ask logical questions, and overall be a good person to follow on Mylot. I have found that some days I can't handle coming on this site simply because a lot of the posters butcher english. You have no reason to be ashamed of yourself!

Wow, I'm flattered. Thank you very much. I like to write this way because there's a trend in the Philippines where people practically butcher every language they know by intentionally misspelling words and such and it rubs me the wrong way. It's called text talk, and all my language teachers can rant about it for hours. It's really killing our language, so I try to keep out of it and encourage my friends to do the same.

I am not really embarrassed or ashamed of my typos because I learn like that. Everybody pretty much learns from their mistakes and that's why I learn everyday. It's the same with driving we all make mistakes when we barely begin, but us we practice more and learn from our errors we become better drivers in no time at all. So you shouldn't be ashamed from your typos on mylot I don't think that anybody would think nothing of it at least I wouldn't. remember we are only human ans with being a human ofcoarse we are still going to make mistakes.

I'll keep your advice in mind. I like your use of driving as a metaphor, I can somehow relate to it although I've never driven a car. It's the learning process that strikes me. Thank you so much for your response. I will try not to think so badly of my mistakes.

Understood, it is embarrassing to say the least. Its also contradictory when you type so fast meaning to say one thing, but write the opposite. I once made a discussion asking mylotters if they proofread their discussion before they post. One mylotter discussed what I just explained. Anyway proofreading is important, but sometimes it can be easy to over something you know is suppose to be there.

Agreed. That has happened to me a lot of times, especially if I edited something in my response before I posted. There would be a few leftover words from my former message or I missed a few words because I thought I already typed them down. It makes me want to hit my head on something when that happens.

Sometimes, we get so excited of submitting our responses, that we are not able to review it. Because of that, those typos are committed. But don't worry, everybody commits them. As long as what you have typed is clear to understand, then don't worry about it.

I can get especially excited when I really meant my responses from the bottom of my heart, so when they don't come out the way I want them to be, it's pretty disheartening, like a drawing you poured your heart into only to find it doesn't look like the way you wanted it to.

Being that I have an English background, meaning that I have been writing my whole life. I used to take typing errors on the internet very serious. Then I got a twitter and all of that changed. I had to my whole typing style to get my thoughts across in 140 characters or less, so now the typo's don't bother me as much as they used to in the past.

I hope I get to that point. I've been writing in English for most of my life, too, and having went through high school joining all sorts of writing contests, grammar and spelling are big things for me. It's the difference between even being considered for the top awards or being dropped from the contest by the first paragraph.

I always read my responses before I post them, but I still make mistakes sometimes. I once wrote a response where I made some typos and missed some words and in order to clarify my point and correct my mistakes I decided to add a comment. I posted a comment...and then I realized that I also made a mistake in comment that was supposed to correct my response That day I wished that I were able to edit my responses! Another day I started a discussion about grammar...and misspelled the word grammar in the headline. Not exactly the best way to introduce my topic

You must've mentally kicked yourself when you made those mistakes, and probably humored yourself for a bit. I know I would have. Life's too short for us to take the little things too seriously. You can be annoyed for one moment and find a way to humor yourself for the next.

Always... especially in the categories like "Writing". Spotted one in an email I sent a while back, too. Everything was perfect except the word "perfectionism", which I'd spelt wrong. Ironic or what?!

Quite ironic. If I was the one who made that mistake, I'd probably get a good laugh. Then, I'd tell my sister and laugh about it again. And my brother too if the joke hasn't grown old. I remember making a horrible spelling mistake during my high school entrance exam. In the very first sentence of the short story I was made to write, I spelled 'explosion' as 'explotion'. I didn't realize it until I reread my draft. It was so embarrassing, but at least I got accepted into the program.

Some of the stuff we've written about without a second thought is obviously embarrassing. But the only plus seems to be we've realised our faults. We certainly shall not repeat them in future.I think its a part of becoming a better writer.

I learned to double check all my posts before posting. XD When your response for the question you're answering is just racing through your mind and you want to finish your post as quickly as you can, mistakes can't be helped I guess. You just have to be more careful next time.

Happens to the best of us. Although I re-read my responses sometimes it happens. Sometimes too with FireFox spell check it is changing my words and I guess I am re-reading my post a bit too fast and it is not until the page is loading that I notice. It happens we just have to be a bit more careful. Nothing to be ashamed of, as long as we are more careful. Sometimes I see it as the page is loading and I want to cry, because by then it is too late. lol

Yes, there are some things that no one can avoid. No matter how many times you recheck you work, there will always be something wrong with it, one way or another. Too bad some mistakes are just pretty darn silly. So silly they can bring you to tears.

That's a great way to look at it. I also think of it like statistical error probability. You make a lot of little mistakes and not so many big ones. It can be a little embarrassing, but you don't mess up big time (not that often at least). At least people don't seem to mind in myLot.

I feel a little unhappy when I send post containing a lot of errors on mylot. However, I try my best to read through my work in later post to make sure that mistakes are reduce. We are all human being and there is no way we can be 100 per cent perfect.

Indeed, no one is perfect, but you can't help but be a little cross about your imperfections every now and then. At least there are some mistakes we don't commit as often.
