A lady went to the bank yesterday to cash a check. In the process, she was given a hundred dollar bill along with the rest of her money to complete the transaction. Her next stop was to get her prescriptions filled. When she paid for her prescriptions, she was told that the $100 she had just received from the bank was counterfeit. They detained her for a while as she feared being arrested & kept insisting that she had just gotten the money from her bank. After straightening everything out, she returned to her bank & spoke with the bank manager who reluctantly made her money good. As many of you may or may not know, most counterfeited bills are $5, $20 & $100s. I've always wondered when this would start happening. From here on out, I'm thinking of making a list of bills received from the bank along with the serial numbers & have the teller sign that is what she gave me. I can see the banks refusing to make good a bad bill they gave me & I'm going to do everything I can to prevent that!!! What will you do to protect yourself???

I always thought that the banks had safeguards to verify that any of the money distributed by them was not counterfeit. Sounds like someone wasn't doing their job. I can see how a bank manager could claim that they didn't give out bogus monsy. Maybe we should add them to the list of people you distrust the most: car salesmen, insurance companies and now bank managers. But, after the fiasco created by the banks in the past few years, I guess they should have headed the list to start with, huh?

I forgot to add politicians to the list. If they're not corrupt when they go in, give 'em 6 months and they will be right up there with the rest. I suppose we could actually make that list quite lengthy if we really thought about it. Who can we actually trust these days?
Thanks for BR, LadyM.

I think that everyone should own a money checker pen which can be bought in Staples or most likely anywhere. Also they should know what to look for in a fake bill. The people that make counterfeit money will tell you that the best place to get rid of them is a bank. they tend not to check the bills when they come in which is crazy. Most stores have a pen to check the bills. Another scam people are using is to buy stuff off from Craigs list with fake bills and then turn around and sell the merchandise for real cash.

This government site shows you what to look out for without having to mark every bill. I don't sell on Craigslist so I don't have to worry about receiving counterfeit bills from a buyer there.

I've turned into a debit card baby!!!
When my checking account was compromised last year & I had to wait 2 weeks to get my new debit card, I learned that I had forgotten how to use cash!!!
I've stopped carrying a purse, but now wear a Buxton cell/wallet. I wear it across my body & under my arm so it's NOT so easy to steal. It carries ALL my debit/credit cards, my drivers license, my cash & also has a place for my cell phone. I can attach my keys to it & it is soooo MUCH lighter than a purse!!!

I don't usually deal with cash but use my debit card. However, I keep cash on hand just in case the worst happens. I have mostly 5s, 10s and 1s because I know $20 and $100 are most often counterfeited. I didn't know they did 5s, too!
I read awhile back that banks are not obligated to made good a fake bill they issued so that woman was very lucky she got her money. Usually it is confiscated and you are out of luck.

I mostly use my debit card. I do keep just a little cash on me for those few places left that don't accept debit cards. Most of the stores here only check $20s & above for being counterfeit. However, the kids here are even counterfeiting $1s. I work with a guy whose daughter was in a gang of high school kids who were counterfeiting $1, $5 & $10s so they could buy what they wanted from the convenience store. They got caught because they were too stupid to go to different stores each time & the owner of the one they hit started watching to see who was passing them. There were like 6 kids passing bad bills at the same store daily & they got braver every day.
This poor lady was on the news this morning. She's a Great Grandmother & she was still visibly traumatized from the experience!!! I can understand the bank not having to make a bill I take in good. However, they are the money EXPERTS & it should be just as illegal for them to pass a counterfeit bill as it is for me to pass one. If they give me one, then they are either printing their own or NOT checking what they are accepting!!! I think they should HAVE to make "their" counterfeit bills legal tender. If they don't, what's to stop those crooks from giving us nothing but counterfeit bills??? Without accountability, they will be just as crooked as the counterfeiters!!! They took her check & gave her unusable cash & that should be ILLEGAL!!! I'm sure the manager had flashes of the local television station showing up at his front door with cameras rolling asking them how they could steal from a sweet little old lady???

Here high school kids are counterfeiting $1, $5, & $10s as well as the pros doing the $20 & $100s. I just find it terrible that our banks take our "good money" in, make a profit off of holding it & are allowed to give us "counterfeit" money back & we're supposed to just blindly accept the loss!!! If I deposited counterfeit money, I would be prosecuted. I think it should be just as illegal for banks to pass counterfeit money to me as it is for me to pass it to them!!!

There's still a problem with credit cards...
My last boss had his identity stolen & it took him almost 10 years & a small fortune to get it straightened out!!!
