Writers who didnt finish the story

i think many of you guys might have experienced this, you were reading a novel or maybe a watching a movie and the ending, is there is no ending. Its unfinished yet the story is still published. Many people say writers do this because its either they run out of ideas so they will let the audience think of the ending or they do this so people will be hyped for a sequel. What do you think of the unfinished endings? Do you like it or do you hate it? What movies and stories gave you these kind of endings? So what is your own ending for that movie? You might also experience this in TV shows, when a Tv show got cancelled by the network due to low ratings.

I think with writers it is not being able to conclude the story or the way you want to conclude the story does not work. Much of it also has to do with time. For instance, when I started writing my novel, I had enough time to write another at the same tme. But what happened was that I needed more time for everything else, so one novel is on the back burner. But it is not out in the workplace yet. I do think that many writers want their novel to be the beginning of a sequence, but never get to it or die before it is finished.. And it is the same with Tv series. That worked very well with the V series, but I am waiting for the continuation of the Prey series that was on ABC and cancelled after one season. I really do not like being put up in the air.

Some writers though think its cool to leave something to the imagination of the audience or readers but I rather have a closure. Wether the protagonist wins or fails I want a closure. Its much rewarding for me to see the end of the journey than making my self think since its unfinished. There is a show That I liked too, its very refreshing and the theme is not cliche but it fails on ratings because Americans rather watch their medical dramas and forensic dramas than something new,

There were times where I was able to have my endings through Fan fiction, you know there were so many fans were frustrated with the lack of ending to the end of making Fan fictions that everyone can read to ease the pain of those people who didn't get their satisfying ending. Sorry for my late response because I wasn't able to get Internet connection but my problems were solved now . I really don't like any questions on my hand when I finish a novel because I want solutions to everything too. Sometimes I discuss it with friends who read or watch the same story and we've made up our own endings do the frustration from the writers laziness.

Tv shows that gets cancelled have no endings... i think.. let me try to explore my brain and try to remember some movies with no endings.. Oh I forgot these animes, Hunter X Hunter and Ranma 1/2 have no endings, even in the last episode because the authors got writer's block and theyw ere too excited to do a different project

Your discussion made me think about a book that I once read. I don't remember the title or the author of the story, but I remember the unfinished ending, because I got really disappointed. It was a story about a couple who went to a hotel together. They slept in two different rooms and when the woman woke up the next day, her husband was gone. The staff at the hotel claimed that she had arrived alone and that her husband had never been there. There are two different options: The woman is mentally ill and the husband was never there or the staff at the hotel are hiding something and they are lying to her (maybe because they killed her husband) The story is well-written and I found it very hard to guess if the woman was ill or if the staff were criminals. I was looking forward to discovering the truth in the end of the story, but we never get the answer. There was no ending, and I found it very disappointing, because the rest of the story was very good.

When I read the story I never got the impression that the woman was mentally ill and I always imagined that it was some sort of crime. I think that they had killed her husband and hidden his body and his luggage or that he had been kidnapped during the night. In one part of the book the woman was walking around in the hotel looking for her husband or his luggage and I kept on thinking: "she must discover the truth soon" but she never did. I think that they were able to hide the truth from her in very clever way.

Its a sad ending that is left with too much question marks, I didnt read it but It makes me wonder what happened to her husband but its a letdown since nothing is solved. Tragic endings can be cool and awesome but at least we want things to be revealed.

wow a very spicy plot that ends in a letdown, Its like a huge waste of a good story. so since you never got the ending, what is the ending in your imagination? What happened to her husband?

I think when an ending is left open because the writer ran out of ideas it shows that the writer got lazy and lost all sense of responsibility for his or her work. i understand writer's block as i have experienced it myself, but when you create a story you must also create an ending. it can be left open for sure, but if you do the open ending has to fit the story and not be there because there was a lack of ideas and so the writer just left it there. when it comes to reading i love open endings as it allows for the story to live on in my imagination and i can ponder the different possible endings to the story myself and can turn it into a feel-good scenario or a tragic scene depending on my mood. Sometimes closure of a story is good, but i do love it when at least some story arcs are left unfinished. when it comes to movies however, i am less fond of open endings as they have become a little too predictable. sometimes they are well done and allow for the same imagination inspiration as open ended books, but not always. these cases are more tricky i find. but then, that's just my personal taste right!?!

I always prefer direct to the point endings, it doesnt matter if its sad or happy as long as things will be resolved. Some of the writers have this excuse " I want the reader/audience to ask questions after watching, I want them to think" but those writers forget they cans till make people think and do realization if they solve everything

I have not encountered a story or movie with no ending. Maybe it depends on the interpretation of the viewer or the reader if he perceives that there has been no ending provided. But I am sure that if there are any in the market, they would not be blockbusters or bestsellers.

A lot of horror and indie movies tries that, its their excuse of being artistic or maybe they were hoping for a sequel. Actually some of those movies and books became box office and best sellers but gained negative reaction from an upset audience.

i seldom read fiction but sometimes when i do, i will think the same thing in reading a story. i wnt it to keep going or think that it was a dumb place to end it.

Hmm... maybe I am fortunate enough not to have encountered a book or movie that has 'no ending'. I mean... I have seen those horror movies (usually) where the last scene gives a clue that it's not actually over yet... but still the current story more or less has a beginning and an end. I think it will be a bit frustrating to read or watch such stories, and I expect I will be annoyed for a bit, but eventually I'll forget about it, I suppose. =P If I happened to like the characters or the story so far, I'd probably just try to imagine my own ending if I really wanted to. =P Oh wait... I just remembered the last Harry Potter movie... I suppose that falls under this? But I don't really mind that because it is expected to have a continuation. =)

somehow you might have encountered Tv shows that got cancelled due to low ratings though. I did enounter that on books and movies but somehow some movies gets to have sequels so sequels did save it, but before watching the sequel I was crossing my fingers that the sequel have an ending once and for all. Well we know harry Potter will have an ending though.

I think it depends, I mean does the climax of the movie/book happen and then during the resolution stage the writer introduces another problem? If that's the case, then I'd say it was set up for a sequel ... then again, I know of one author that has ended books in the middle of a sentence, which of course he did on purpose. There are also some authors that simply can't think of an ending (or they don't want to put the ending on that they originally had), so they sort of muddle through it. Some authors can get away with this based on their names along, but beginning writers normally don't have that luxury. Of course if you are talking about horror, the horror isn't really supposed to end. The movie/book is supposed to leave you feeling scared to turn off a light at night, so these books may or may not have an ending. As for TV shows, if it's cut short ... yes, that would annoy me. ;)

If its up for a sequel then its a good consolation somehow but in some of them sequels didnt get into fruition. Your observation about establish authors makes sense, its really ridicolous they can get away with it. In case of Tv shows shows being unfinished happens a lot because of cancellation, I wish they at least try to just make a quickie ending , its bad but at least its a closure somehow. I remember there is a famous manga author who have the reputation of not ending his project, he is able to make good plots and stories but it gets ruined because he doesn't end them. when he feels like moving to a new project he will do it.

Some one story I like in TV but not more. In many channel the story has been gone so long and long they stretched it without something new on it. Sometime they insert that characters who doesn't know why he entered & lots of climax changed without any feeling. Such a boring things happened so I left that to watch a TV Serial.

TV networks do extend shows specially if the ratings or good and with the saturation it loses the quality. So I understand how you feel.

I actually started writing because the TV series I loved as a child just stopped, and I was desperate to find out what the ending was. There wasn't one. So I wrote my own. I think it would be bizarre for a novel, though. People don't publish unfinished novels, do they? I suppose they do sometimes publish novels which have a hook for a sequel but then never publish the sequel.

You know i wrote fan fictions when i experienced something like that too, a tv show that i liked so much got cancelled and I was so pissed off and a fan fiction is my only way to ease the pain. I wrote a lot of fan fiction when I was 15 up to 16.
